Meanwhile, a few tree-lengths away in a more covered part, lay an unmoving Moonpaw. The badger had wandered back into it's nest, deeming the still she-cat unworthy of finishing off. A soft breeze ruffled her fur, and her eyes - or at least, one remaining eye - was shut tight. Oddly enough, a weak ray of sunlight shone through the tree tops and birdsong seemed to come out of nowhere. A moment later, Moonpaw blinked, letting the hazy surroundings settle in her vision. Puzzled, the she-cat got up and shook her fur, glancing around. Everything seemed normal, and she was about to call for her friend before an icy chill overtook her. There, at her paws, surrounded in crimson blood, was... herself.
Fear kept her ridged, eyes unblinking and every fiber frozen. She could tell that she was not breathing, or at least not that she could see. A large pool of bright red blood stained the frozen ground around her, and the black parts of her fur blended in with it - the snowy white parts being stained by the sharp color. A gagging noise could be heart as Moonpaw stumbled backwards, shocked that she could so easily see herself. Scared and not sure what to do, a shrill wail rose up from her, however unbeknownst to her, no cat would be able to hear her. "Tawnypaw! Surgestorm! Swiftflight! Leopardpaw!" she called, her voice a hoarse choking sound as she shook her head, muttered unaudible words. Was she dead? She looked down at her paws and was surprised to be able to see right through them. No, no, no.... she thought, shaking her head even more as tears flooded over her eyelids, blinding her vision as she sank into the snow, sides heaving with each gasping sob that racked her body. She couldn't be dying. She just couldn't.
After a few moments passed, the WindClan apprentice felt a presence by her side. A familiar scent washed over her and she gasped, eyes flying open. "Mom?" she whispered, turning her head slowly to look at who had joined her. A jolt of happiness shot through her and she scrambled to her paws, ramming her head into the newcomer's chest. "Mom!" she cried, her frightful wails turning into tumbling purrs of affection.
The newcomer, Birdflight, smiled and simply nudged her daughter's head, a loud purr rumbling from her. "I've missed you, love," she murmured, to which Moonpaw felt herself melt further into her mother's soft warm fur. "But it is not your time yet." Moonpaw blinked and looked, confused, at her mother as she spoke. Not her time?
"Does that mean that... I...?" she wondered, but before she could ask anymore questions, her mother's starry outline began to fade. "No, come back!" she wailed, desperate, for one last moment with her beloved mother. Realizing that she was gone, Moonpaw felt the tears rejoin together, threatening to spill over the edges as her whole body trembled with sadness. I don't want to go back, she thought angrily, muscles flexing underneath her coat. Her starry outline began to shift momentarily with the though, and the real Moonpaw's temperature began to slowly drop.
