Giving Pinewatch an approving nod, Whitewolf observed her care of the cats within her training. More and more of them steadily learned to swim and Robinwhisker wasn't doing too bad a job. Shadowkit, too, was getting better even though he'd hardly done anything--Whitewolf sometimes forgot the kit was blind.
"Good work, Lastkit; I think you almost have it," she said to the tom and then turned to Thunderchaser. "Thunderchaser, I want a status report and for you to check in with your cats."

Emboldened, the kit pushed away from the shore and headed deeper, staying near the others just in case. It was a pleasant feeling, swimming. All his long fur was whirling about in the water, weighing him down a bit, but not a lot.
This gave him an idea.
A possibly terrible, but also possibly fun idea.
Lastkit figured a bit of self-indulgence couldn't hurt anyone.
So he dove. Almost the moment his head went under the surface, the cool water rushed into his ears and tickled his nose, dulling his sight.
whoa.
The creamy-brown tom could hear nothing but faint splashes, see nothing but blue, and smell nothing but- well, he couldn't smell at all, actually. It gave him a sense of peace, a feeling of serenity. I'd hadn't been this quiet since the time he'd woken up in the middle of the night, and even then there were snores from his denmates.
However, the peaceful feeling ended when Lastkit's lungs began begging for air. Luckily, he'd sunk to the bottom- it wasn't all that deep- and kicked at the ground, launching himself upward.
Just like that, his senses came roaring back.
"Yes, I am..."
"...status report..."
Lastkit took a huge gulp of air, paddling to stay afloat. Only problem was, he was getting tired.
