Slatestripe purred when he felt the grass beneath his paws turn to sand. He loved the feeling of soft sand under his paws, of it sliding between his toes. He didn’t love picking the little grains of sand out of his paw pads later on, but it was worth it to be able to experience the satisfaction of walking on the beach.

The waves lapped quietly at the shore. He knew this would be Autumnpaw’s first time seeing the ocean. RiverClan was beyond lucky to be able to call this part of their territory their’s; no other Clan enjoyed quite the view as they. The ocean stretched far beyond the horizon, the water dazzling in the sun. Briefly, he was reminded of the last time he’d ended up in the sea, washing out into it with Rainglow. He suddenly realized that he hadn’t swam in the rapids since, or even been there for that matter.

He looked down at Autumnpaw, eager to see her reaction to seeing the ocean for the first time. “Welcome to Lionsbeach… and to the ocean.”

Beastgrowl sat by the bank, his horrifically scarred face watching the waves. The waves didn't just him. They didn't care that half his face was pink, grotesque flesh. They didn't care about his crooked jaw. They just went on with their lives and let him be.

If only cats could be like waves. Not ostracizing those who were different. And no one else knew what he had gone through. They didn't care about the trauma he had gone through. He was Beastgrowl, the young warrior. He was Beastgrowl, the cat that had lost half his face during a brutal dog fight. No one cared. every pitying glance he received was a slap in the face. Those cats smiling piteously at him didn't realize that it didn't make him feel better.

It made him feel like a pigeon among phoenixes, and nothing could make it better.

Birdpaw was having a rough go. Her two best friends in the world were missing, and she hadn't talked to get father since coming back from StarClan. Her spirit was visibly dampened as the small ragdoll padded to Lionsbeach, looking up only when she noticed that she wasn't alone.

She knew this time from seeing him around camp. "H-hi Beastgrowl." Recognizing the upset facial expression on his face, she frowned. "Are you okay?" Padding closer, she tried to sit nearby, while still giving him the space that she assumed he needed

She stepped onto the sand, almost squealing in excitement at the soft and damp substance. Looking around, she inhaled the air full of salty sea spray. It smelled strange. Fishy, too. Then there was the ocean. Oh, wow. She really wished she could have seen this sooner. She stood agape at the wide expanse of sloshing water. She bounded forward, only a few tail lengths from the waves against the shore.


Slatestripe! I take it back about Haven Springs, this is my favorite! she squealed, batting some foamy waves as they washed toward her. She giggled and thrashed her tail excitedly. Oh, wow! Wow, wow! This was so pretty. And awesome. And exciting! She wanted to wade in the water, but that would be way too dangerous. She took another deep breath of the salty air and turned back to her mentor. Her face had a grin and her eyes were bright and wide.

When he heard Birdpaw coming, Beastgrowl gasped in a bit of surprise. She was talking to him?! Usually cats didn't approach him because of his scars... Did that not bother her? "Hello, Birdpaw. I'm... I'm okay, just thinking." She wasn't too close, which make his inner voice just start screaming that she was frightened and disgusted by him and was just talking to him out of pity. Like ugliness was contagious.
