Minnowpaw followed her mentor into the water. It was cold, but not cold enough to make the grey apprentice jump out.
“Brrr” she mumbled “is the water always going to be this cold?”
She waddled a bit deeper into the water despite her feeble protests.
Minnowpaw flicked her tail happily, spraying water in all directions and smiled.
“I like the River.” She purred after a moment.

"It can get colder, although that's during the months of leaffall and part of leafbare." Greenleaf was actually the perfect season to swim, due to the warmer weather making the water feel bearable. "Well, since you seem to like it, let's begin. For a gentle swim, all you have to do is simply paddle, like this."

Whitesnake did a simple doggy paddle, moving her limbs back and forth slowly. "For more difficult weather however, that's not entirely going to work, you have to put more strength into it so the tides don't carry you off, got that?" She couldn't really show an example here since there was no big waves, but hopefully it would get the point across.

Minnowpaw studied Whitesnake closely.
“That seems easy enough.”
With the grace of a newborn kit, she leaped deeper into the water.
Paddling with strong strokes, Minnowpaw swam back towards her starting place.
“Whitesnake?” She mewed when her feet touched the bottom again. “What happens when the water rises? Or when it freezes?”
The lake freezing sounded terrifying, how would RiverClan eat?
The river flooding didn’t seem as bad. When it went down maybe it would make a new place to swim!
“Has the River ever flooded before?”
Many more questions began to pop up on the apprentices mind. But not wanting to overwhelm her mentor, she refrained from voicing them.
When did the River last freeze over?
Does the River freeze every leaf bare?
How long does the River stay flooded?
How long can a cat stay under water?
How long can a cat swim?

No. Minnowpaw stop.
she told herself. Stop. With. The. Questions.
She instead leaned into the water again, it was warmer than the air around her, so it felt nice.
Why is the water warm now?

Stop.
Minnowpaw smiled up at her mentor, did her mentor know all the answers to the questions she wanted to ask?

That was so many questions. . .and Whitesnake was more than ready to answer them all! "Okay so, I don't know if the river has flooded before, although it probably has, or what really happens when it rises a lot. When it freezes you can't really, access it, or at least you're not supposed to, we end up doing land hunting when that happens."

She took a pause to catch her breath, before continuing. "Your swimming looks good so far, at least for a first timer, I'd recommend trying to be. . .less hard in these waters though, best to not exhaust yourself."

“So, are we goi to stay here? Or keep going with the tour?”
She tapped her paws in the water, making a few small splashes.

"We'll keep going with the tour, come on." While swimming was important to learn. . .so was not getting lost and dying.

Her paws basically skipping towards her mentor. Minnowpaw quickly shook the excess water off her.
Her tail flicking back and forth quickly, showing off her limitless excitement.
