Cougarkit settled down in the clearing and gave a yawn, feeling absolutely exhausted. Last night, he had had this odd dream where a Twoleg had been feeding him kittypet food and stroking his back. The tom-kit shuddered even as the warm sunlight bathed his fur. It had just been so weird.
“Well, hey there, Cougarkit!”
Hearing the familiar voice sent a sense of dread up his body. Looking up, he saw the light blue gaze of Bearkit bearing into his own. With a squeal, he leapt to his paws and saw another shape approaching. It was a gray tom-kit with lighter stripes.
“What?” Cougarkit asked, his fur puffing out defensively.
“Oh, how cute that you’re retorting like this,” Wolfkit purred, moving to stand beside Bearkit. “After all, you are just a dumb little kittypet.”
Cougarkit blinked, feeling icy cold spreading throughout his body. Had they read his mind and seen into his dream? Then he remembered the whole situation with him being part-kittypet. Of course they’d be teasing him about that.
“I’m a WindClan kit!” he insisted, trying to make himself sound strong. “I’m strong! Yeah! I’ll shred any of our enemies who dare come near!”
Bearkit snorted. “The only thing that your stunted kittypet claws could shred is the wool of sheep!” he crowed. “Not the pelts of enemy warriors!?
Cougarkit unsheathed his claws. “Stunted not!” he exclaimed, then aimed a swipe at Wolfkit. However, the light-striped cat ducked and his paw rammed painfully onto the ground. “Ow!” he exclaimed.
Bearkit and Wolfkit glanced at each other before breaking into laughter. “Wow!” Bearkit gasped out. “That was so stupid that a full-blooded kittypet could’ve taken all of that weird golden fur from your pelt!”
“Yeah!” Wolfkit exclaimed. “Not to mention the odd eyes. It’s so clear that you’re different and not one of us!”
Cougarkit felt dejected and angry all at once. “Shut up!” he yowled, feeling wetness pricking at the corners of his eyes. “Just shut up! I am a WindClan cat through and through! It doesn’t matter that I have kittypet blood. I’m strong!”
“Well, that little feat didn’t prove that to me,” Wolfkit admitted, then glanced over at Bearkit. “Hey,” he meowed, “want us to show him what real strength looks like?”
Bearkit snorted. “Why not?” he asked, sliding out his claws.
Inside, Cougarkit felt scared. However, he dared not show it. Keeping his claws out, he crouched down, his tail whisking from side to side. “I’m not afraid of you!” he declared boldly, looking both of them straight in the face.
Bearkit laughed. “I could smell your fear-scent from fox-lengths away!”
Wolfkit nodded and leaped at Cougarkit, his light blue eyes glinting. The golden tom-kit tried to duck away, but he felt the other tom-kit land on his tail. Squeaking, he was thrust into the ground, his legs and tail flailing as Wolfkit climbed onto his back and held him down. Fear-scent was coming off in waves.
“Let me go!” he yowled, his voice coming off in a higher pitch than he intended.
“Nah,” Wolfkit mewed while Bearkit grinned. The kit’s claws glinted in the light. “Any last words?” he asked.
Cougarkit surveyed the kit’s odd-colored pelt, brown with… stripes of light gray? “Your pelt is weird, and you’re here bullying me for being different!” he shot out.
Bearkit growled. “You wouldn’t say that again!” he hissed, beginning to slice at Cougarkit’s face with a claw. The golden tom-kit yowled, his paws and tail flailing. The third time the kit sliced his muzzle, though, it cut deep and drew blood. The warm substance ran down his face and he let out a weakened wail.
“Come on, Wolfkit,” Bearkit mewed to the gray tom. “We don’t have to bother with him anymore. After all, he does have kittypet blood.”
Snickering, Wolfkit got off of him and the two kits strolled away. Cougarkit, his eyes full of wetness, looked away and watched the blood trickle off of his muzzle.
