Is Cheerleading a sport?

I am doing an argumentative essay on this topic in writing class, I want to hear everyones opinion. I am personally a cheerleader, and am very defensive in the topic, believing yes. I don't mean to be rude if I tell you something, but please at least have a reason for your side of the debate.

I wod say yes, cheerleading is a sport. It is heavily related to athletics / gymnastics and you have to move your whole body. There's even some competitions. It's not recognized as an “official” sport but if you search up the meaning of sport it fits into that quite well. I think it honestly depends on the type of cheerleading, though – wether intense physical movement or just cheering and small movements.

Yes, I belive it is. I personally think that since it involves a lot of moving and skill, it is. On the other hand though, there are no points. Maybe copetitive cheering has points, but this dont. Maybe thats ok though. I say yes

I do horseback riding, so I completely understand how frustrating the 'so-and-so isn't a real sport' discourse can be. I believe cheerleading is absolutely a sport - it involves teamwork, physical activity, dedication, and a high mental and physical performance. if that's not a sport, then I'm not sure what is.

Most cheer teams participate in comps, which include trying to get a point score of 100

Yep, I know! Some cheerleading teams just generally cheer for teams in tournaments though, which is why I added that. To be honest though, I think it's definitely a sport.

Cheerleading is a sport like golf is a sport. If you believe it is, then it is.

Sorry, that answer was very inconclusive. My answer is the same though. It is subjective. I feel that most people consider a sport a sport if it's historically popular, like football, or in the olympics, like baseball. I also feel like those two things are much more prevalent in the public's current eye, unlike cheerleading, so that may have something to do with it. Also, Cheer is a very specific sport for a very specific group of people.
