WCO Warfare: Analysis and Discussion
The art of war is of vital importance to the state. It is a matter of life and death, a road either to saftey or to ruin.-Sun Tzu
Crack of the lightning, splitting the ground! Thunder is sounding, artillery pounding, wrath of the [REDACTED] cast on Bastogne, facing their forces alone! alone…Chill of the winter, bite to the bone, Christmas is crawling near. Soldiers are freezing, the death toll increasing, they're dying in their holes…-Screaming Eagles by Sabaton
Warfare. Where any living thing exists, it exists. From the simple battle of the trees for the sun to the clash of a hundred living, breathing beings shoved together in a desperate struggle, in whitch there are two outcomes: life or death. Some are world-changing, some are last stands, and some are worthless struggles that are only made to satisfy the whim of a leader. Here is an analysis of warfare in the clans.
Clan Ranking By Military Strength
1. ShadowClan (9/10)
2. WindClan (7/10)
3. ThunderClan (5/10)
4. RiverClan (4.9/10)
Strongest Leader In Combat And Strategic Planning
1. Dawnstar (9.5/10)
2. Twilightstar (8/10)
3. Bumblestar (6.2/10)
4. Larkstar (3/10)
As the above lists clearly indicate, ShadowClan currently has the strongest combat ability, as demonstrated in The Second Battle for Sunkissed Creek (The Fury), where ShadowClan trounced ThunderClan and captured the creek. Although RiverClan recently defeated WindClan (The Queen's Revenge), the constant shift in leadership and sudden death of Gingerstar has weakened their resolve and loyalty to Larkstar. ThunderClan is weakened by disease, leadership mistakes, and poor handling of clan relations. In addition, ThunderClan is currently on bad terms with all of the other clans.
Problems With (Most) WCO Warfare 1. Lack of large-scale strategy in most wars and attacks
2. Ambushes and sneak-attack raids on individual patrols don't usually work because of the way the Battlegrounds are set up
This thread is open for discussion on tactics, past/present/potential WCO conflicts, as well as clan and leader strength. The ratings are open to change, so let me know if they feel innacurate!

Re: WCO Warfare: Analysis and Discussion
i think wco battles suffer from a lack of. . . diversity? they seem to fall into the same pattern of [raid/attack], [defense is suprised!], [one side retreats] a lot. some strategy and organization, i think, might be nice to spice it all up.

Exactly! And they are almost always for land, not to weaken an enemy clan or frighten other clans. The clan leader gets exactly one patch of territory and never presses the advantage.

the funny thing is, i've got a google doc i've been working on for a few weeks discussing how i'd like to suggest rc utilize strategy irp in a potential future battle. some of the key talking points are why its good outside of roleplay, too. this is a topic i'm glad you brought up, because i think it goes under discussed! it could be a great tool to have more complex interpersonal relationships, more nuanced experiences during battles, more diverse possibilities and over all might raise battles activity because of the new options that strategy brings to the table!
like, for example, a scouting party composed of clan members with shadow fiend. or, perhaps, a diversion attack on another area while the real battle is set up elsewhere. the possibilities are practically endless!

Nice! Maybe you could PM me a link to the doc, or just the main points? As for diversions, those would be the holy grail of strategy in the hypersimple combat of WCO. The crescent would make a good defensive strategy, but for some reason leaders don't understand the idea of: 1. in-battle command. 2. Pre-battle planning and strategy that is SHARED WITH THE CLAN! I hate it how the leaders in WCO are just like "well, off to war," and do absolutely no planning or strategy/tactics, and if they do, none of the warriors get told about it. And seriously, how hard is it to give commands other than 'attack' and 'retreat' in battle? I never hear the leader assigning cats to squads pre battle and then (during the battle) command the squads to make maneuvers. The communication and organization just isn't there.
