as a therian I can and will say that yes, shifts are very painful. Especially mine! I have many theriotypes such as
Wolf, crow, and cat. I remember my cat and wolf previous life fairly well but my life as a crow is somewhat blurry and some fragments are missing. And no not everyone is a therian. Being a therian is painful in many ways. And no you can’t understand animals when you shift. No matter how hard I wish to communicate with my brethren again I cannot.
I’m someone who lives in the countryside beside many streams and woods which is good for me. I do quads nearly every day and I have ( a crap ton of gear ). And yes it’s ok if you’re not sure what you are yet! It took a while for me to reawaken my past.

I think I've had a phantom shift a few times- this week a pair of bunny ears, last some horns and the week before some wings. I've always had the phantom form of leopard though, I always feel the tail there.

so first of all, yep!! and our system has multiple alters (people) with wings in our headspace, which is what we look like inside the space our architect (another alter, in our brain) has created for alters that aren't fronting :] hope that clears some things up!
