"Once you're done," Lionstar continued when she settled down, "I want you to report to Sass..Sassyfire.. look their name is complicated, but they will be your new mentor. Can't miss them, they have some interesting things going on, a white and gray tabby cat. They recently lost their apprentice so you should be an easy transition. Now, go ahead and get started on your chores."

Berrykit was bored. She sat in the clearing just outside the nursery. She wanted to play moss ball, but she had no one to play it with. Her whiskers twitched as she waited for someone to show up and give her attention. She suddenly noticed a cat sitting nearby. Maybe she’ll play moss ball with me, Berrykit thought. She picked up the wad of moss and bounced over to the other cat. ”Hi!” she mewed. “I’m Berrykit! What’s your name?”

Lightfeather turned around quickly, only to see that Berrykit was sitting nearby. "Oh-um, my name..? The name's Lightfeather..." when she saw the moss ball under Berrykit's paws, she thought to herself, Is she alone like me..?

Lightfeather. That’s a nice name, Berrykit thought. She gazed up at the she-cat and tilted her head. ”Do you wanna play moss ball? I know it’s a kit’s game, but none of the other kits are here right now.” Berrykit hoped that Lightfeather would play with her. It seemed like they both needed a friend in the clan.

Lightfeather hesitated. Should she get on with her duties? Or would she play with Berrykit, who had no one else to play moss ball with? I'll play with Berrykit... I may not want to be made fun of by the other warriors, but if there's a kit who needs something, I will gladly help.

Berrykit purred, happy that she had gotten her way. She had a subtle way of making sure she got what she wanted. She tossed the ball up into the air. “Catch!” she yelped, excitedly. She couldn’t wait to tell Peachkit about how she had gotten a warrior to play moss ball with her.

Lightfeather tried to claw for the moss ball, but though she was a fine hunter, she had a hard time catching the dark, green ball. About what seemed to be a moon later, Lightfeather said to Berrykit regretfully, "I must carry on with my warrior duties. But we could do this another time..." she couldn't get Berrykit out of her mind. Berrykit seemed very playful and real nice, and then something came to Lightfeather's mind. I wonder who her mentor will be when she's an apprentice... She pictured what it would be like to have Berrykit as an apprentice. They could do everything together... they could hunt, go on patrols, practice fighting... Wait. Lightfeather realized how she herself wasn't the best at fighting. She had to prepare for an apprentice, that is, if Berrykit would ever be her apprentice. I'll just wait and see...

Berrykit was upset that Lightfeather had to go. The young kit wanted to keep playing, but she knew that warrior duties were more important. She hoped that the warrior would eventually become her friend or maybe even her future mentor. She mewed goodbye to Lightfeather and padded into the nursery, putting the moss ball away for safe keeping. She could play with some of the other kits later. Berrykit walked over to her nest and fell asleep.

Lightfeather woke up to a start. She wanted to see Berrykit again today. She was thinking of trying to convince Lionstar to possibly make Berrykit her apprentice, but she would annoy her leader some other time. She padded from the warrior's den all the way to the nursery entrance. She sat down, waiting for Berrykit to come out.

featherkit nodded, she trotted over to the fresh kill and grabbed the black and white warbler. It was fairly large and it took some effort to drag it to where finchpaw was, but she manged, "A meal for two!" she giggled, featherkit instantly gripped her teeth around a small wing feather and pulled it free, before she went to a whole behind a rock where several more feather where and returned back to finchpaw, "do you collect feathers?" she ashed the apprentice before getting a mouth full of feathers to get to the meat.
