"with how you put words together and everythin', i like the way you think, and whatevers runnin' through that mind of yours."he admitted. risingcreek was always honest when it came to compliments or his thoughts. he wasnt harsh, but he would speak what he seemed valuable. it had been a long time since he had a casual talk with another if he were being honest. he was a workaholic, something never changed. sometimes he regretted it. he was kind to almost every cat he met, there were no excuses to why he couldnt socialize, but he had always put his clan above him. but now, in his older years, he was taking a bit of time to relax and enjoy the cats around him. so it seemed necessary to approach beetleskip, after all, no one deserved to be alone, even if it was gentle, more calm company. risingcreek didnt mind though, he had basically seen it all when it came to personalities, there wasnt anything he couldnt adapt to. but he wasnt adapting to anything when speaking to beetleskip. how his own voice seemed to soften because he knows things overwhelm him, how he didnt mind keeping up conversation for the both of them at first, and so on. maybe he was naturally being considerate for him, or maybe he just really enjoyed his presence. like said before, it was nice to talk to someone that wasnt a kit. it was nice to just talk to beetleskip.
now that comment is what made beetleskip really sit upright and open his eyes to stretch to the size of saucers as he looked at risingcreek. he hardly realised what the other tom had said. it really was rare that he spoke to other cats, let alone gain compliments or any form of praise from them except for casual things, like how he's performed that day and the such. even if he did get compliments, they always seemed a bit... lacklustre and meaningless, not that he would really complain. he prefered the silence compared to speaking anyways. but risingcreek really seemed to mean it, which is what sort of scared him. it made his chest flutter and suddenly all of his focus was on the words risingcreek had spoken. smart? the way he spoke? of course beetleskip thought of the way he spoke and put words together, but he never thought they would ever really... mean anything to anyone but himself. he bit down a smile.

" thank you, i... " he trailed off when he realised that he had nothing else to really say to that.

he then realised he was feeling a bit warm compared to the cold exterior outside, and he realised he was staring. not blankly, however. he was staring at risingcreek's features. his rosy brown fur that almost shined it was so well-kept, compared to his tangled mess of a pelt, he almost felt ashamed. his eyes that gleamed with a kind, generous tone almost made beetleskip want to fall into them. he was covered in scars, some faded, some newer from the recent battle. he didn't know why, but he... he liked risingcreek's appearance. it was rather... endearing. he shook the thought away and quickly looked back at the activity of milling cats. still, the noises were muffled by his thoughts that he was reorganising.

"I didn' put ya in a daze, did i?" he chuckled at his response. was he taken back by compliments? most cats would, but not to leave a poetic cat speechless. he liked it though, he seemed to get a bit nervous possibly? it was cute. cute? well, risingcreek couldnt think of a proper word for it, and thats the closest word he could come up with honestly. so, beetleskip was cute. from his lose of words to his lingering gaze, risingcreek couldnt help but become a bit warm under his green eyes. it was new and it felt like a heated rush than anything else, after all, he didnt know what it was like to feel flustered, or be attracted to someone in the first place. he had never had a mate in the first place, or even gotten close to that stage with anycat. so this was all new but refreshing, like the breath of cold icy air he took in, huffing out a white cloud of air. this tom was something, wasnt he? he didnt know why he felt this way. after all, he only met beetleskip on a few patrols and whatnot, nothing beyond that besides this conversation, so obviously this shouldnt be to much of a big deal. but he could help his relaxed smile grow wider, his eyes shine a bit bright seeing him take the compliment to well, and let his gaze linger to while beetleskips was focused on the clearing.

he had longer fur than him, much better for the weather they were going through right now. a cream color base with threads and fur that yes, were tangled, and had risingcreek itching to groom them out of clean habit, but looked soft to the touch. not to mention the soft hues of brown markings or a typical ragdoll, and green eyes that reminded him of clovers, his favorite plant. he was more bulky and probably shorter than risingcreek, but he didnt seem to care. he liked that.

beetleskip wanted to be able to say something back, but the sultry purr in the tom's southern voice made beetleskip clamp his mouth shut. he couldn't help it. when faced with something he didn't understand, he often clammed up and pushed it away just like everything else. he forced his eyes to his paws that were twisting in the dirt now, fidgeting out of nervous habit. he shut his eyes and took a breath, trying to think of something to say, which was again strange to him. he knocked the thoughts away and thought of something simple to say, which turned out to be a challenge as well. risingcreek was just a tom, another warrior, another member of the clan. he could mean nothing more to him than that. it shouldn't be hard to talk to him, but a meaningful compliment was something that beetleskip had never heard in his life. he took a breath.

"... no, it's just..." he looked for the word for a moment before casting his gaze off to the side, "strange. different. i've never heard such a compliment before regarding my word usage or tone. or my thoughts. it took me by surprise, that's all." that was probably the most words beetleskip had spoken at one time. to both himself and another person. strange. that seemed to be a common theme running between their conversation for beetleskip.

"Im surprised," he commented. this cat really didnt talk a lot to other cats, huh? well, he meant it though. for some reason that only made him want to compliment him more, purely for the fact that he didnt receive those compliments. he didnt know why he got the strong urge to, but he did. "well its true, i think youre a smart fella." he seemed unique. from the simple things he noticed was that he seemed more reserved than most, taking in each word risingcreek was saying with care and returning them. more closed off, more shy, by rising liked that about him. so many cats were loud or talkative, when he himself enjoyed the subtleness of convenient and comfortable silence, or casual chatter. he didnt know why he liked talking to him so much, he seemed rather off and nervous, yet more comfortable than risingcreek had ever seen him compared to patrols. but he understood that, he knew what he was somewhat like. it was easy to overwhelm him, its why he always tried to speak in a softer tone and constantly remind the other patrol member to keep it down when they were together, because somehow not everyone was as considerate as him. a shame. because looking here, he liked this side of beetleskip much better. the shy, but flustered, and more talkative side. maybe he just liked beetleskip in general. he couldnt tell.

he had never thought of himself as... smart. observant and analytical? yes, of course, but never smart. he tried to take the compliment in stride, attempting to put a few more poetic words together in his head but in the end, it just resulted in silence and a boiling concoction of phrases and syllables in his head. he tried to focus on something else, anything apart from his scrambled mind and the tom next to him. very uncharacteristic, he spent most of his time organising things in his head. but however hard he tried to focus on the chatter around him or the sounds of nature accenting the activities, it always came back to the sinking feeling of realising he'd gotten into a conversation that he couldn't get out of. he was getting hotter by the minute and for once he hated how thick his coat would get. perhaps it was coming back to risingcreek because he was likeable in beetleskip's own respect, which was strange on its own. perhaps it was coming back to risingcreek because this conversation had lasted longer than a hello, a silent nod, and a goodbye. he didn't want to focus on that too much.

" you are..." he attempted to find a word in the archive of his brain, hesitantly turning his gaze to the tom, " interesting. in a... in a good way. " that was the best he could come up with.

risingcreek couldnt help but let out a low chuckle, letting out a quiet snort inbetween. "I could say youre intrestin' too, in a good way of course." he replied. he could tell by the silence that the tom was growing nervous, he was pretty good with reading people. he only hoped that he wasnt overwhelming the other warrior, he only had good intentions. so he didnt mind the silence, letting out musical hums to fill it. there was no pressure to talk sometimes it was nice just to enjoy the presence of someone else, relaxing even. and he defiantly enjoy beetleskips if he was being honest with himself. unlike beetle it didnt take much for risingcreek to speak, words seemed to flow out of his mouth easily like silk, smooth southern charm lacing his words and making them that much sweeter. dont get him wrong, he loved to talk, but he also knew that the other tom was more on the reserved side, and would gladly accept that. he felt like he was glowing, pelt feeling a bit too hot for comfort and a never ending smile on his face. maybe beetleskip had his own charm, too. is risingcreek were to put it into words his charm was his poetic words or easy flustered glances. the charm seemed to work on him alright.

beetleskip decided not to say anything this time, only giving an acknowledging hum in response. he didn't want to say anything more, in fear of saying something embarrassing or saying something that would lead to even more embarrassment on beetleskip's end. he felt better when he didn't speak anyways, and risingcreek seemed to be able to carry the conversation just fine on his own. even if it had shifted its focus to beetleskip, which he wasn't a fan of, beetleskip had to be honest with himself and say that he sort of enjoyed risingcreek. not just his compliments or his appearance, but his personality was one that beetleskip couldn't seem to ignore. risingcreek just seemed so genuine, so happy, despite being older and having little to no familial connections within the clan. he seemed so happy to just be, and beetleskip supposed he found that rather admirable. to just be happy to exist, to have air going in and out of your lungs and enough sleep at night. he liked that about risingcreek. it made him reflect on some of his own thoughts for a moment before his attention came back to the tom beside him. he attempted to change the subject.

" you are an older warrior, you must have sacrificed many things to get where you are, " he murmured, giving risingcreek a sideglance as he addressed him, " does that not bother you? "

he was taken back by the question for a moment, returning his side glance with a shrug,"No, its doesnt bother me. I give my all for the cats that will eventually give their all for the next generation of kits, as my ancestors did for me." he answered. he was content with life. while he didnt have many cats alive that he was related to, and never got the chance to have a mate and kits like a typical family dream, he was still happy. he didnt care if he was unrecognizable or didnt die a legend. he was simple risingcreek, and that was okay with him. "Everyone has their time, and soon it will be mine, and my family members time was sooner. everyone just handles death differently." risingcreek had never been the pessimistic type of cat, nor an angry hateful one. he always saw reason in any action, or the brighter side of things, its how he had always been. he was rather lonely though. he didnt really have anyone, despite treating every cat that crossed his path with kindness. he missed his family, his past friends. but they were long gone now, and he was the only one to be standing in the end. so thats why he enjoyed every breath he took, every piece of prey he caught, every beat that his heart made because he could die tomorrow, or today, or couldve yesterday, but he didnt, and that was enough in itself a good reason to live.

there was a curious hum in response, something neutral as beetleskip tended to be. most cats, when faced with being alone, were bitter and tasteless or lashed out often. he wasn't like that either if he were honest. even when his sister left abruptly without a trace, he had always been rather quiet and shy, his persona was not a result of being abandoned. really, he had never felt abandoned. loneliness was a common feeling that plagued him, even when he had a warm mother to press into and a denmate to explore with, he had always felt incredibly alone. he was used to it. he had never really bothered him, to never connect with anyone, to always be different and singled out and distant. perhaps that was why when risingcreek had started speaking it felt so strange to be able to continue the conversation. perhaps finally connecting and creating what beetleskip could only hope would be a close friendship is what this fluttery, embarrassed feeling in his heart and throat was. he hadn't the faintest idea.

" interesting... " he mumbled, trailing off as he stared blankly forward, getting a bit absorbed in his thoughts, " in a good way. one would expect such a fate to be plagued with bitterness and fear of abandonment. perhaps you are one of the lucky ones, " he murmured, his thoughts becoming easier to connect to his mouth now, flowing smoothly in a poetic fashion. it fit him much better than the stammering, struggling with words beetleskip that he had been just moments ago.

"It all depends on how you take things in," he started. sure, he had faced some of his own hardships in life. he had been lonely since his birth family died, he had been lonely not taking a mate,"when youve seen as much as i have, you learn there are more things to do than dwell on the past." his tone was a bit more somber, but not completely sad. he had seen it all. he had seen his bestfriends slaughtered in the evil era, he had watched cats die from starvation in the winter, he had seen cats turn and change, become something that they were raised to be and kill anything in their path. each and every scar he could remember by heart, he could tell you how the weather was that day, how the teeth felt in his throat or how the claws felt in his back. "Its about the future, and bringing them up right to be better then yours once was." there was a smile on his face again at the thought of kits. he loved them, and wanted some of his own. he considered frostpaw his own son, and that was enough for him. to take care of someone and leave a paw print in the next generation was the true meaning of life. he was fine with his life though, there wasnt anything he could really do about the past, so there was no reason to dwell on it, but make the futures better than his.
