Scorndusk froze and shook his head vigorously. No, no, no. He had given up on catching feelings long ago--why now? He roughly batted at Lightpaw's ears, like he could claw his feelings away. "Wake up!" he hissed.

Lightpaw swore she could hear Scorndusk trying to wake her up, pleading. Lightpaw tried not to think about what was all happening. Her mother being killed, falling unconscious, falling into a stream. Lightpaw refused to wake up, her head was bleeding, she tried to open her eyes but couldn't.

Lightpaw wouldn't move. She struggled to breathe, but finally started to. Maybe if Scorndusk just killed her, only in her dreams, then maybe everything would be fine and then Lightpaw wouldn't have to go to the Dark Forest ever again. The truth was obviously visible to Lightpaw. She knew Scorndusk had feelings for her, and liked her. She knew it all.

With a start, he remembered where he was. No room for mercy here. "Get up, Lightpaw," he growled. "We don't have time for your heroic battles." With a swish of his tail, he turned and walked farther into the forest.

Scorndusk was in her dreams, trying to get her to join the Dark Forest and be on his side. Lightpaw would probably be weak in the real world, but she would be dead here. "Just kill me." She coughed. "It would do you a favor for sure." Blood seeped from Lightpaw's mouth, and she knew she could move, she knew she could be alive, but Lightpaw just wanted her life to end. Scorndusk probably wouldn't kill her, or would he?

Scorndusk's ears flattened in panic. "Kill you?" he yowled, his voice shaking slightly. "What is wrong with you, Lightpaw? Use your head!" He snarled, baring his sharp yellow teeth, shoving his face in front of hers. "You! You...."

Stay calm, Scorndusk. His breathing slowed as he eventually calmed down. With a start, he realized what he was doing. Poor kit. For a moment, he was afraid that he had completely broken her soul. I can't let that happen, he vowed. For her training. And for something else, too.

Scorndusk stepped away from her, his eyes blazing. "I won't kill you, Lightpaw," he decided. "Go home. Get back to your warm moss bed, and I will return to mine." He flicked his tail, refusing to meet her eyes. "Rest while you can."

Knowing she had to listen for her own good, Lightpaw slowly, and shakily, got to her paws, limping away, eventually to the point she had to drag herself back to the exit of the Dark Forest, but then she realized there was no exit, or was there, blocked by thorns and trees? Lightpaw looked over as Scorndusk left, but she wanted to question him, ask why the exit had basically been blocked by dangerous foliage and trees, did he really want Lightpaw to try and leave with all this?

Tears were glittering in Lightpaw's eyes as she realized the villainous cat was actually a member of her Clan, and then she let out a snarl. "Tell me your secrets." She growled. "You may be my Clanmate, but that doesn't mean you're hiding something." Lightpaw had a sense that the tom disliked Goldenstar. She had seen it in his eyes, and she had overheard him talking about Goldenstar. "You want to kill your own leader, don't you?" Lightpaw demanded. "I'm going to tell Goldenstar about this, your secret isn't going unheard without me around."

Fear flashed across Scorndusk's face. "You don't know what you're saying," he responded, but his voice was uncertain. "Who will Goldenstar believe: a young, stupid apprentice or a loyal warrior?" Privately, it was all he could do to keep himself from panicking. Who told her? he wondered desperately. His plan had been his and his alone--as far as he knew, he hadn't told anyone... or had he? Scorndusk could feel his confident mask slipping. Whoever let it slip... he unsheathed his claws, absentmindedly shredding the mud underneath his feet.

He stood straight on his paws, towering over her, but even he knew that it was no use to bluff. "What do you want to know?" he growled, salvaging the last piece of dignity he had left. "And how do you know about my plan?"
