He was walking through Shadowclan territory from memory alone. It'd been six moons since he had found that kittypet rogue on Shadowclan territory so any scent of the incident would have been long washed away. His night with Queenie, healing her broken leg, had made him contemplate how exactly he'd be able to get a view inside of a cat. Looking inside a living cat wouldn't be possible without irreparable damage, but taking a dead cat could give him certain insights that could help him get a better idea for future injuries he may encounter.
Elmshadow looked around for familiar landmarks that could jog his memory of that day and where exactly he'd been. If he could find where the incident happened then he was confident he'd be able to track his movements to where he'd dragged and buried the peltless body outside of their borders. Though the forest was looking lusher and renewed than when he'd found the large intruder on his territory in the middle of leafbare.
After some zigzagged searching he finally found a clawed pine trunk that he recalled marking that day. From there he was able to retrace his steps fairly accurately until he came upon a slightly open area and the fight came back to him. He reminisced about how disappointingly easy the fight had been against such a large opponent but the pelt had been nice when he offered it to Dawnstar. He padded more confidently over the littered ground until he crossed the scent-marked border and retraced his long-ago steps. He began digging, uncertain exactly where he'd buried the tom, until his paws scraped against something white. He stopped briefly then turned his digging more precise and careful. When the bones were uncovered he noted that they were separated, no longer held together by flesh that builds the cat. He sat back perplexed. It was a slight inconvenience he hadn't considered. He'd assumed he'd grab the bones as he would a pelt and walk it back but the tom had been reduced to a pile of bones.
Getting an idea, Elmshadow turned away and found a bush that was lined with cobwebs. Using his paw to gather a decent-sized wad of cobwebs, he then turned and walked back to the makeshift burial place. He gathered the bones after studying the way they were laid out in the dirt and wrapped them together in the cobwebs. He picked the mass of cobwebs and bones up between his teeth and padded back to camp. In his den he'd set to work reconstructing the skeleton so he could use it in the future to get a better idea of what was happening inside the cats he was treating.
