What is a therian? “Therian” is short for “therianthrope”. It means a person who identifies integrally as a nonhuman being, such as a wolf, polar bear, or even earthworm.

In general, furries are individuals who say they are furries. Therians are individuals who believe they are not completely human and instead identify as a species of non-human animal.

A theriotype, originally known as a phenotype (first created in alt. horror. werewolves on November 28, 1993), is the species of animal(s), extant or extinct, that a therian identifies with.

Can a furry be a therian?

It just means that they believe that they are that animal, or that they are an animal trapped in a human body, or even they were an animal in the past life. Not all Therians are furries, and not all furries are therians.

Essentially, therians aren't entirely human. Sometimes, they experience shifts, which is a change of mindset from human to animal. A quick note is that being a therian is identifying AS an animal, not identifying WITH an animal.

Okay, I'm not a therian, but I am a furry…so I'll just clear this up: what is fury compared to a therian? A furry is someone who has an interest in animals with human characteristics (think Zootopia and Sonic the Hedgehog), while therians believe they have some spiritual connection to a type of animal. Furries are also interested in art of anthropomorphic animals, and many have alter furry egoes, called fursonas. In addition, therians think that being a therian is not a choice; rather a thing they are born with.
