Doeflame could smell the mouse too, snuffling around in a clump of bracken. Nodding her head towards it, she mewed I smell it too. I think it's over there. It didn't seem very alert, so Squirrelpaw stood a decent chance of catching it. Deciding, she mewed Now it's your turn to catch something. Creep up on it, and the pounce. Hopefully her apprentice would do well, and would be able to have something to contribute to the fresh-kill pile. @Azzi

Squirrelpaw looked in the vicinity of where Doeflame nodded, and spotted the mouse. Going back into the hunting crouch, she crept towards the mouse. When she thought she was within pouncing distance, she sprang forward and tried to catch the mouse in her claws. She missed, however, and only pierced the mouse with one claw. The mouse ran off, leaving a tiny trail of blood behind. Without thinking, Squirrelpaw bolted after the injured mouse and jumped right on top of it, mutilating its body. It was a messy kill, but at least she got it. She picked up the freshkill in her jaws and ran to Doeflame. "I caught it! I caught the mouse!" @gs29513

Sorry nothing! Doeflame mewed, bristling. I assume you heard Beastspark send you on patrol! Oh, this cat really rubbed her the wrong way. "Sorry" wasn't going to cut it. Sitting around who knows where doesn't feed the clan, so I suggest you hop to it! My apprentice has already caught more prey than you, and this is her first ever hunting lesson! GO! Go hunt.
Turning around, Doeflame mewed Good job Squirrelpaw! You've caught your first prey! At least one or two of the cats here were motivated. Remembering the sloppy pounce, which really led to all the problems, Doeflame kicked a stone a foxlength away. Squirrelpaw, I want you to leap from the stone as far as you can, like you're pouncing. she mewed slowly, thinking it out. That way, we'll know how close you need to get before leaping to stand a chance of a neat kill. @Azzi @Neon Lights (Sorry about Doe, she's a little nuts)

Squirrelpaw, still excited from the catch, meowed "Okay!" She judged the distance between her and the stone, then moved a little closer and pounced. Overshooting the distance, she landed a mouselength ahead of the rock. @gs29513

Good job! You can jump pretty far! Doeflame mewed encouragingly. Why don't you back up a bit more, and then try it? The farther you can jump, the less stalking you'll need to do. And it was always easier for excitable apprentices to jump rather than stalk, which required patience, and calm, which most apprentices lacked. @Azzi

Squirrelpaw nodded at Doeflame. She walked back to where she was, then eyeballed the distance. She was about a foxlength from the pebble. She walked backwards two mouselengths, then got ready to pounce. Squirrelpaw then sprung into the air and landed right behind the pebble. @gs29513

Good job Squirrelpaw! Doeflame mewed happily. Her apprentice was shaping up to be quite the hunter. Why don't you put your skills to work, and see what might be hiding, oh, over there. she mewed, flicking her tail towards a so far unhunted patch of trees. With any luck, something would still be hanging around. @Azzi
