Default Re: Whac-A-Mink [WC/ShC]

With a one-legged back kick, Dawnstar freed herself from the mink clinging to her hind leg and crushed the one biting at her chest with one bite. A hint of amusement flashed within her eyes as she watched Briarsplash kill another mink. This proved less stressful when you had the right number of cats to care for the problem. Dawnstar twitched her tail and looked around after turning to confront another mink fleeing past her legs.

Dawnstar realized that the fight was all but over. Only a few minks remained either picking a fight or fleeing, bleeding and whimpering in fear. "Briarsplash, check on your clanmates, make sure none need assistance," Dawnstar ordered her warrior with a respectful dip of her head. The molly had fought well today and hadn't slowed Dawnstar down. It was a feat to be admired.

Dawnstar padded slowly through the devastation, ignoring the fleeing minks. Her attention was grabbed by a large warrior who had fallen. He wasn't ShadowClan, but he was clan, and that beat minks any day. For her clan, she'd rip apart any of the other three clans who stood in her way. But when it came to outside threats like foxes, hawks, and minks, she was honorable enough to at least fight for the clans. Sighing softly, Dawnstar darted over to the tom and stared down at Wolffang for a second, before baring her fangs and lunging.

She wrapped her huge fangs around the mink's slender body and bit down hard, she ignored the loud screeching and flailing as it released the tom's throat to turn on her. Didn't matter, it was already dead, increasing the pressure she snapped the mink's spine and then dropped the body near Wolffang's head.

"You're welcome." Dawnstar grumbled, licking the blood from her muzzle as she recalled who the warrior was. Wolffang, a former deputy of WindClan. The tom had lost all of Dawnstar's interest after he lost his deputy rank. If he got bested by minks like this, it was no wonder he was no longer a deputy. Dawnstar peered at him for a moment and then turned her back on him.

"Finish this!" Dawnstar's roar echoed around the hills as she padded through the valley. The fun was all but over and Dawnstar was eager to collect her cats and ShadowClan's haul and return to camp. She needed a nap and had a meeting to call.

Leechscar turned his head to glance at Lightingstorm as she added her own two cents into the conversation. As expected she was quick to the point and snarky as ever. He smirked slightly and looked over to Iceclaw who seemed more focused on him than Lightingstorm. Halfblind? Did he mind that large dark ShadowClan she-cat... he guessed that was fair.

Leechscar's eyes went rolling again at Iceclaw's sarcastic response and expression. He parted his maw to issue a scathing reply, but Dawnstar yowl returned his attention to the battle. The minks were on the run it appeared. It looked like the battle was over, and no one had called for any medical attention, great.

"Lightningstorm, most of the minks have cleared out and no one needs emergency assistance. Do you want to head down and examine some of the injured cats, use up the herbs you have, or wait until we get back to camp to look at our clanmates?" Leehscar quired, he didn't care what she used the herbs for but knew they only had so much. It seemed smarter to use them on WindClan cats over ShadowClan. Her choice though.

In a quick move, Lynxshade freed herself from the mink grasp and pushed her hind legs against it with all the strength she could gather, then swiveled her ears toward Palesong, who was struggling with another one and needed her help.

Swiftly, Lynxshade dived with her fore legs stretched forward and her sharp claws unsheathed, sinking them into the mink's pelt to hold a grip before grasping its neck in a mortal grasp. Blood spurted in her mouth as she bit and broke the mink's spine, but there was no time to linger around. "Palesong, watch your back!"

At that moment, another one much bigger was looming over the unaware apprentice. Lynxshade lunged forward to push Palesong away from it, but before she could do it another one attacked her from the left side and raked her flank with its tiny sharp claws.

She turned around, flailing wildly with her forelegs to push it away from her, but she was caught off guard and the mink hooked her ear. A sharp pain radiated from the tip of her ear to her head, and she felt warm blood trickling in her eyes. For a moment, she wondered if she even had any more a tip of her ear.

Palesong shot Lynxshade a grateful look, about to go attack the next one when a giant one suddenly appeared beside her. Aquamarine hues were ripped wide open and she extended her claws, drawing down on it's belly in a swift motion. Why was it so big?! As much as she tried to push it away and make it bleed it just kept coming back. She wheezed, out of breath, as she finally managed to pin it down. Her teeth sunk into it's next as she finished it off, but it squirmed so much that it set something off.

There was a loud cracking noise, and then a sharp pain in her jaw. She Palesong let out a half-muffled scream, the pain overwhelming her. Something was.. not in the right place. Her claws thrashed wildly around her as she tried to fend off some of the remaining minks until they'd all be dead, with the help of the rest of the patrol. She couldn't give up yet..

~ WOLFFANG OF WINDCLAN - AMAB HE/HIM - BEEFED UP TIER 1 ~

Large, muscular, dappled gray tom with light cream-gray fluff on the front of his neck and chest; amber eyes.

Character bio can be read here.

When Wolffang had killed that mink with Leopardsong, he'd hardly thought a second about it. It was dangerous, sure, but nothing to really worry about. Yet he had certainly underestimated this one. Blood trickled from his throat as the mink clung on with its sharp teeth, soaking into the fluff that covered the front of his neck and chest. It burned with pain. No matter how much the lean yet sturdy tom thrashed and twisted, he couldn't get it off. It was somehow just out of his grasping claws, and it refused to let go.

This was not going to be how he died. Not from prey. Not when he had a future with Leopardsong. Not when ShadowClan cats were watching.

A shadow loomed over him.

Wolffang twisted toward it. His stomach clenched. He would recognize that hulking, thick, muscular, battle-scarred she-cat anywhere. Not a she-cat. A creature, just like these minks were.

Dawnstar.

Coming to laugh at what she thought was his death.

Determination flared within Wolffang, but the second it did, the ShadowClan tyrant lunged for him. Elongated canines flashed, and his own pain made him too slow to retaliate-

Dawnstar's teeth sank into the mink and tore it away from him in a splash of crimson. Then a crunch filled his ears as her powerful jowls cracked its spine into two pieces. Probably more.

Adrenaline and rage made Wolffang shoot to his paws, hardly aware of the blood now soaking his front. He stared at Dawnstar uncomprehendingly. You're welcome. It took a moment for him to realize that this creature, who had killed and skinned and tortured WindClan cats for fun, had just... saved him.

His single ear burned with humility. Then his cheeks, then his paws, then every drop of blood in his body, even the stuff trickling from his injured throat. Wolffang wasn't sure what to make of it. No, he was sure. He hated it with every fiber of his being. And it perplexed him, too. Dawnstar didn't save WindClan cats. She cackled on a nest of pelts as she watched them die. So what was this? A change of heart?

Any cat can change. Wolffang had learned that long ago. But Dawnstar? Could she have turned a new leaf? By helping WindClan and saving his hide?

"You're welcome," was all she said before turning away and yowling to her Clan. She didn't need a response from Wolffang.

He glared after her. He didn't want to respond.

No. He answered his own question quickly. Wolffang had learned before, many a time, that the victims did not need to forgive those who had wronged them. And Dawnstar had done far worse things than Wolffang had. He still wanted to claw her throat out. This was a very, very small payment for all the suffering she had inflicted, one that would never douse his burning hatred of her. Besides, he felt like she was doing this as a courtesy. Being saved by Dawnstar, of all cats! How humiliating, he growled silently as he whirled away. Now he just had to kill another mink and show her that he was perfectly capable of handling himself.

Wolffang rolled: 16! He hits! I also realize I've been using the dice system a little strangely - I'll fix it for the next battle.

Wolffang felt the world began to tilt, but he gritted his teeth. His amber gaze darted around the grass. There. The long-bodied, dark brown creature seemed ready to flee. It was also in Dawnstar's line of sight. Well, he wouldn't let it escape. The WindClan warrior crouched low, then lunged, landing on the mink's back. It squealed and twisted, but Wolffang grabbed it by its throat and ripped it out. It lurched, then went still. He gave Dawnstar a look before picking it up and moving back toward where that other warrior and her apprentice were.

His steps were sluggish. His head kept spinning. But he could not show any signs of weakness in front of ShadowClan. Not after Dawnstar had seen him like that. The fact that she'd saved him... No, he didn't want to think about that.

Wolffang promptly licked as much blood as he could away from his chest, wincing as he ducked and more blood oozed out, then quickly arranged his excess of fluff to hide the worst of it. There. Once he got back to a WindClan-only group, he could show Lightningstorm his wounds.

BRAVEBIRD
she/her | windclan fury | 45 moons
As she followed alongside Lightningstorm, her smirk growing at the medicine cats response to her, Bravebird's blue gaze flickered over towards Hawkfur as her friend began laying out orders. Oh, she knew that had to sting with Dawnstar, so immediately the Fury lifted her gaze to catch the ShadowClan leader's reaction. Ooh, it thrilled her very much to imagine just how badly Dawnstar wanted to rip her claws through her fellow Fury, but couldn't under the circumstances. Seems like the alliance had in fact come in handy, and of course the WindClan Fury was going to be a bit boastful about it.

Leechscar was with them to help bring bodies back, and a cat named Iceclaw... who had thick ShadowClan scent in his pelt. Immediately Brave felt her fur stand up and took a step forward as if to warn the ShadowClanner against any rash moves towards their healer. There didn't seem to be any though, so she let her fur lay flat once more. Outside of his snide comment to Leechscar, which Brave was certain her fellow Fury could handle.

As the battle started and cats dove towards the minks, Bravebird's eyes scanned the fighting. No one seemed too gravely injured yet, and while most of her attention was on the fighting, her companions words didn't escape her. She snorted at Lightningstorm's snippy response to Iceclaw, feeling a rush of admiration for both her and Leechscar. She set her herb bundle down and cast Iceglaw a side glance, though said nothing. "Perfectly capable of everything except seeing your own two paws in front of you," she sneered towards Iceclaw, rolling her eyes before looking back out at the battle-field.

Her attention was taken by Wolffang who seemed overrun by minks. Immediately she felt her heart leap into her throat, and then her throat tighten as Dawnstar approached. For a split second Bravebird readied herself to launch at the ShadowClan leader and rip her away from her Clanmate. But she was... helping? The circumstances came back to her and the Fury relaxed a bit. The gratitude she felt... it was disgusting.

Most of the minks seemed to be running now, and Leechscar posed the question of checking on those who might still be injured despite no one calling for emergency assistance. Bravebird picked up the bundle she carried and readied herself to follow Lightningstorm, whatever her decision was. She was a bit sad that she hadn't gotten to defend the healer from any minks - or ShadowClan toads - but at least the healer was safe.

While she waited, there was a sudden... twist in her stomach. Bravebird forced herself not to once, but she suddenly felt a bit sick. Confusion warped her features briefly but she ignored it, figuring it was just some small bout of anxiety at not having fought.

Shrewstep took off after a second mink, eager to keep going whilst there were still rodents to fight. It took a few moments to chase one down, short legs hampering him, but he was able to lunge at it and sink claws into its hindquarters to gain its attention. It whirled on him swiftly, but he was equally agile and avoided its snapping teeth. He received another cut to the shoulder, an addition to the collection of small nicks the minks had imparted, but nothing that should overly hamper his mobility in this fight, or going forward. That was always the goal. Get glory, get bodies, and don't mess yourself up in the process.

He feinted to the left before going right, scoring his claws along the minks side and trying to scuttle clear. This time he wasn't quite fast enough. It managed to gain a hold on his tail with its teeth, and he yelped in pain and anger. Whirling around he slashed at its muzzle, but it refused to release him. Fine. Have it your way tunnel rat. Shrewstep went straight for the throat whilst it was distracted with trying to pin him down, accepting that the tip of his tail would be a bit mangled from now on, though the mink would be dead before it could do any more damage. His claws sunk into its throat and it fell, limp.

It was a good time to finish the fight too, for Dawnstar was calling them to reassemble. She seemed to have gained some control over their patrol which had temporarily been in the power of a bunny. Shrewstep certainly wouldn't complain about that. With no immediate threats coming his way, and being relatively able-bodied still, he did his best to corral the two mink carcasses which he had obtained into something that could be carried. He could probably drag one, but he might have to find another, larger cat to carry the other, or else sling it over his back somehow. This being small thing was never convenient when fighting per se, though being small and slippery could be just as effective as big and strong, but it was even more annoying when it came time to carry away the spoils. With something of a dispassionate interest, he noticed that Deadmoon was still alive.

Silverlark didn't know where Slytiger had gone to. It was impossible to see the tabby underneath the swarm of minks he currently wrangled with, the one latching on to his neck becoming a nuisance. With a battle roar that seemed to echo through the falls, the muscular enforcer raised himself on two paws, ignoring the mink who took advantage of this and tried to make him topple by gripping at his ankles with sharp teeth, the pain more than tolerable to the gray tom. Ducking his head in a bid to ensure his neck was not exposed to the annoying creatures, the silver warrior took a leap on his hind paws before twisting in midair. His specialty. Back to the ground, he pressed all his weight downwards on his enemy, feeling as well as hearing the bone crunching sound of its defeat.

Teeth now limp on his neck, blood gushed freely from his side, his vision blurring slightly as he struggled to stand back up, the minks that remained over him sensing his weakened state and launching for a brand new attack. A vicious snarl escaped the tom, however, and without thought he brought a paw up before smacking down on one of his would be attacker's heads, unsheathed claws gripping tightly as he smashed the mink's head against the ground, dipping his own to ensure its death was unquestionable. Unbeknownst to him, the cats around him were doing excellent work of their own, and the few minks that remained around him, seemingly sensing their defeat squealed as they ran away. The crimson throated warrior frowned, seeing their hard to make out outlines getting further from him. Refusing to let them go as he took a step forward, slurred words escaped him-

-before his world turned dim and noiseless.

Default Re: Whac-A-Mink [WC/ShC]

@TheNyanCatMinecart (I hope it's alright that Dead cut in a little bit)
Most of the time Deadmoon saw things in.....normal motion. Nothing extraordinary going on, life progressed at one, measured, consistent pace. But for a moment, it felt like everything was going too slow. Like honey, trying to flow across flat ground. One moment she was looking up in triumph, two minks slain and no more approaching as they began to truly disperse, or were already dead. The next a panicked yowl was threatening to escape her throat, but died there like something shut up in a cave as the fear of the moment clamped cold jaws around her windpipe and stole her breath.

Dawnstar. Standing over Wolffang. Wolffang was ON THE GROUND. Wolffang was not supposed to be on the ground. This was bad, very bad, so very bad. There was BLOOD and Dawnstar was moving away now. Had she been distracted and not noticed the battle turning? Deadmoon had been relatively isolated on one side of the valley, with many of the other warriors in their patrol pushing to the center. Was she about to pay for her initial slowness to take up a position, and therefore different location? Had the Shadowclan cats turned upon her clanmates? What if they were all dead and she was the only one left alive and Dawnstar was about to come for her as she'd come after Breezefeather? Deadmoon wasn't as important, but if their 'allies' had gone rogue she would have to die. Such a witness could not be allowed to survive, and there was no way she could outrun the Shadowclanners to the falls. Not with her leg, already reducing her speed, freshly damaged.

But Wolffang was up. He was up, and there was a dead mink beside Dawnstar. Had....had the Shadowclan leader saved him from it? It sounded absurd, the deputy killer, the shadow walker, helping a Windclan cat. But maybe this allies thing was a bit more tangible than she had imagined. Deadmoon didn't know. It didn't really matter. She was already making her way across the battlefield their territory had become, or doing her best to. It was slower than she'd like, by the time she made it over Wolffang had already killed a final mink and was well on his feet, but she was panicking just a little bit and needed to see him with her own eyes and make sure he was alright and not going to keel over unexpectedly on her. Starsdamnit this should be Leopardsong's problem. She was the one who'd gotten the fool to fall in love with her, she should deal with his idiotic tendencies to injure himself.

Logically, Deadmoon should be aware that it had not been Wolffang's intent to injure himself, and that she could just as easily have ended up in the same situation if she had been in the thickest bit of the fighting. But was Deadmoon thinking logically at this moment in time? Absolutely not. She was finally, finally close enough to her half-brother to see him sort of fully and she didn't like it. He wasn't moving right, his already heavy steps slower and less precise than they ought to be. And he didn't look fully present, though that might just be her fears for him cloud her judgement. Regardless, Deadmoon limped (it was quite a limp at this point, post-minks) up next to him, sniffing him despite the absolute pointlessness of such an exercise. Wolffang. Wolfie. What happened? Do you need to see Lightningstorm? Was her concern likely to be accepted graciously? No. Certainly not. Was that going to stop her? Nope!
