Mintkit's silence was suddenly broken by the arrival of someone in front of her, where a brownish and white, long haired tom was looking at her from above. She lifted her head and stared at bright yellow eyes, wondering why someone had even approached her - especially an older cat which wouldn't probably join the mass of younger kits and apprentices in the games. What was he doing here?

The warrior's voice was gentle and warm, but his gaze brought with it something deeper that she couldn't recognize. Instead of replying, Mintkit flicked her ear in acknowledgement and switched her attention to the ground, hoping that the meeting would end on its own.

Ducknose hesitated, wondering if he should just take the hint and walk away. Instead, he settled into a seated position while leaving a comfortable amount of space between the two. "I remember being a kit and watching the others in the nursery play," they murmured softly. "I honestly don't know I ever had a chance to play any of these sort of games. I was an only kit, and the others... we didn't get along well."

He kept his eyes trained on the young cats who were starting to break off into groups, dutifully rolling moss into balls and preparing for their games. The smile on their maw turned bittersweet and they glanced once more to the kit by their side. Ducknose wondered if any of his own experience would resonate with the kit. He couldn't explain it, but the warrior couldn't stand to see this young one left out. Even if she had accepted it.

"May I ask for your name?" They had to admit that they weren't familiar with all of the kits in the nursery, though perhaps they would do well to familiarize themself will all the young kits. The kits would become apprentices, after all, and Ducknose was starting to think it might be time for his first experience as a mentor. Not like they knew exactly how Pikestar decided these things, but the warrior was 28 moons now. Surely his time to train an apprentice would come soon.

Hawkpaw shot up at the mention of "Mossball". "Sounds fun!" Hawkpaw meowed. "How Immature." Quailpaw let out a mrrow of laughter. "Hey, what's wrong with playing?" Hawkpaw asked irritated. "Mossball? It's probably just some stupid games the kits are making up." Quailpaw replied. "Oh whatever you think your to cool for everything!" Hawkpaw growled, and ran off to play.

Mintkit was actually thinking about the name of the warrior beside her. Ducknose... it reminded her of something soft and innocent, and she thought that it was very appropriate for him. Would she ever see a duck near their island? Probably not. They're not so stupid to come so close to us. And usually patrols didn't find them. Or maybe they just preferred other type of prey.

The white-grey cat noticed that the warrior had crouched up a few tail lengths from her, but it didn't bother her. He had just shown he was able to respect her silent desire, and a sparkle of interest appeared in Mintkit's eyes.
She tipped her head to one side as Ducknose narrated his memories as a young cat; she could well imagine his difficulties and shyness as a young cat, but maybe there was something more that he wasn't telling.
Is he telling me this because he was like me?

Mintkit stroked the sandy ground gently with her tail while she decided whether or not engaging herself in a conversation right now.
"..Mintkit. It's my name."

Mangrovekit sighed. None of the kits wanted to play, and plus, none of them liked him either. Mangrovekit looked up from where he was to see Slatestripe. Mangrovekit's favorite warrior. "Slatestripe!" Mangrovekit called.

(That's up to you and how well you want Mintkit to grasp the understanding of stuff like that! When I write Ducknose I just switch back and forth between he and they pronouns, since he goes by he/they, but each cat's personal viewpoints on the topic would change if they use Duck's full pronouns. Some cats might just stick fully to "he" while others may alternate to use their pronouns as intended :) He wouldn't correct a cat who strictly uses he/him pronouns, either, because he does identify as a tom rather than specifically being nonbinary, he just uses he/them pronouns with that identity)

Mintkit. Ducknose couldn't remember how old this kit was, but the name did give a sparkle of familiarity in his brain. He must have heard some talking about Mintkit's litter. "Well, it's nice to meet you Mintkit." They gave a quick dip of their head in the kit's direction, a sign of respect as well as a greeting. Ducknose was a firm believer in giving each clanmate of his respect until they lost it; most believed respect had to be earned, but in the warrior's mind simply being a clanmate beside them was enough for them to earn that initial respect.

They eyed the laughter and enjoyment taking place in front of the two cats, mind whirring to put together a plan to let this experience be fun for the kit beside them. And, if Ducknose was being honest with themself, they'd love to join in on the fun, too. Heal a little bit of their inner kit who had longed so strongly for a chance to join in on something like this. Shifting, he decided that his earlier honesty seemed to earn some interest from Mintkit, so perhaps that was the best approach.

"Mintkit... do you think you could do me a favor?" He turned his yellow eyes onto the kit once more, ears still trained on the commotion in front of the two. "I... I think this would be a very nice experience. For me," they quickly clarified. "But, as a warrior... well, it'd look funny to join if I didn't have a reason to. Do you think you...?" Ducknose left the question in the air between them, sucking in a breath while awaiting Mintkit's response.
