Slatestripe led the group of cats to Lionsbeach. The waves slapped against the shore, creating a peaceful sound that ranked high up among Slatestripe’s favorite. He wanted to pause to take in the beauty of the ocean before him, but there were more important matters at hand.

He sprang up onto a large piece of driftwood that had washed ashore. He turned to look down on the cats who were in attendance. “Thank you for your attendance!” he called. “I am going to re-state at this point that only apprentices with existing battle training may participate in this event. If you are an apprentice that has not received battle training, you may still watch. Everyone else, listen closely!

“I want everyone here to find a partner. Again, your partner should either be a warrior or an apprentice with existing battle training. If there’s an odd number of participants, either myself or Reedwhisker will partner with the odd cat out.”
