Smiling to herself at Hazelpaw’s exuberance, Rainydawn trotted along behind her. The seal point came to a halt beside the pond and watched with amusement as the new apprentice took in her surroundings. The area around the pond really was beautiful and Rainydawn found herself remembering the wonder of seeing places within the territory for the first few times again. “Alright, we’re going to be fishing today. Come sit beside me and I’ll show you how to do it.” Rainy dawn positioned herself so her tail was wrapped around her paws and she was sitting solidly yet lightly. Her shadow didn’t touch the water yet she was close enough to dart a paw fluidly into the water. |

Rainydawn smiled and let out a little chuckle. She peered over at her apprentice for a moment before looking back down at the water. “Moons of practice! Now what you want to do is situate yourself so your shadow isn’t on the water and that you are close enough that you can strike in one motion instead of having to move closer to the water first.” A flash under the water caught her eye and she quickly thrust her paw forward and scooped a fish from the rippling surface, dispatching it on a flat rock before her. “Then you scoop the fish out and kill it. You have to wait until you see movement before striking.” |

Hazelpaw seemed tentative and Rainydawn wondered if she’d gone too fast. The younger she-cat seemed willing to try, though, so Rainydawn sat back and waited, eyeing Hazelpaw as she dipped her paw in the water and waited. The bengal mix highly doubted she would come across any fish with that method- the ripples would send them all running for at least a few minutes. To her surprise, one of the dumber fish it appeared decided to inspect the paw. Unsurprisingly, though, it darted away as soon as Hazelpaw moved the limb. Then again, it appeared that Hazelpaw had moved her paw to avoid the fish. Ah so that was where they had to start. Chuckling softly, Rainydawn dipped her own paw into the water. “Why don’t we start by just getting used to the fish. Dip your paw in and wait, if we are still enough they will come. Just let them swim around your paw and get a feel for them.” |
Re: Cattail Pond
Slatesting led the tom towards cattail a smug smile plastered on her jaw. She was an excellent hunter, being a loner among the clan she was entirely devoted to her warrior duties when she was awake. Hunting was a perfected practice that took time but she had all the types of time on her paws. She pushed her way through the cattails with another swish of her tail before approaching the pebbled bank. “Alright woolylame shall I show you how it’s done? Or you want to strut your stuff so I can teach ya how to do it the right way hm?” The warrior said promptly sitting down to groom her chest fur down. There was nothing wrong with looking fashionable while beating woolys butt. @elysian |
Re: Cattail Pond
After waiting a while and not seeing her mentor, Splashpaw decided to try again. When a fish came in range, she tried scooping it up with her paw, and this time managed to flip it onto the bank. Pouncing on it, she bit it's neck until it stopped flopping around. Moving a few fox-lengths down the bank, she waited for more fish to come near. @Snowstripe

Re: Cattail Pond
After a while, Splashpaw saw another fish swim near. With a happy twitch of her tail, she swung her paw out, but just barely missed it. Unfortunately, she caught a branch drifting in the wind, which pulled HER into the pond. With a yowl, she went under, sucking up water. After thrashing about a bit, she found swimming wasn't that bad. You just ran in the water. As she swam, she marveled at all the fish. But her fur was SOGGY. So she swam to the bank, and scrambled out. Sitting in the sun, her fur began to dry. After what felt like forever, another fish swam by. Sticking her paw in a bit more carefully, she managed to pin the fish against the bank, and scoop it out. Killing it, she stretched, and continued waiting, wondering where on earth her mentor was. @Snowstripe

Reedwhisker sat down by the pond, calmly cleaning his paws. He saw Splashpaw hunting the fish and purred. "Nice catch! But you need some work on technique. Do you want some tips?" he mewed standing up and shaking out his fur. "You don't seem too comfortable in water either!" He padded up to the apprentice. "I don't think I know your name." |
Re: Cattail Pond
Um, ok! Splashpaw mewed, surprised to see the warrior. He wasn't on her patrol, was she? So what do I need to improve? she asked, looking intently at him. @esa

Reedwhisker licked his nose, happy to train again. "Alright! So you've got to be prepared. You've got to focus on the fish and be in the right position.Like this!" Reedwhisker exclaimed, crouching near the edge of the pond. He leaned his weight onto his back paws, ready to pounce. Keeping his head clear of the water so it didn't leave a shadow, Reedwhisker became still as a rock. "It can be a waiting game since we have to wait for fish to come near enough. In the stream the fish have less control of where they're heading so in a sense it's easier there." his muscles were tense and taut. The flash of silver near the surface of the water was all he needed and he leapt forward swiping both paws into the water and flung the perch onto the grass. A sharp bite ended its flapping. |
Re: Cattail Pond
Got it. Splashpaw mewed at the demonstration of the position, trying it out herself. It felt a little weird, but maybe she wasn't used to it, and that was all. Seeing the special effort to keep the head back, she tucked hers almost in to her chest, but thought better of it. Watching as he snared the fish, she asked Why did you go in with both paws? Don't you fall in? Maybe she was wrong, but she wanted to make sure. She wanted to be a warrior before her sister! That would be cool. Or not, if her sister got mad at her. Who knows. @esa

Re: Cattail Pond
@gs29513
Reedwhisker was pleased about Splashpaw's curiosity. It made training apprentices way more interesting. "Well you're right, it's harder to keep your balance but it makes it easier to get your claws into the slippery skin of the fish." he mewed, flinging the dead fish into a little ditch so that it didn't fall back into the pond. "It's a matter of choice and I'd personally rather fall into the pond than lose my prey." He leapt into the pond and the water lapped at his chest. "Come on in!" |
Re: Cattail Pond
Um, ok? Splashpaw mewed hesitantly, dipping one and then the other paw in the water. Taking a deep breath, she leaped forward, landing with a sploosh. I made a splash, like my name! she crowed, flicking water into the air. @esa

Surprised at her mentor's sudden arrival, she decided to introduce the cats. Reedwhisker, Snowstipe. Snowstripe aka teleportation mentor, Reedwhisker, who is helping me fish. They had a lot of fish already. She had 2, and the adults each had one. Maybe they should head back. Or maybe not. @Snowstripe @esa
(Fine, but Reedwhisker's been helping Splash out) |

Reedwhisker dipped his head. "Sorry Snowstripe, I didn't mean to intrude on your training." he mewed, turning to leave the pond. He felt pleased that Splashpaw's mentor had returned. He picked up his fish and left. |
Re: Cattail Pond
It's fine! Splashpaw called after the warrior. I needed help since my mentor didn't show! Turning to her mentor, she mewed We should probably catch more fish. This is a hunting patrol. With that, she sat beside the water, and waited. Spotting a fish, she swung both her paws, and managed to grasp the fish. She also toppled in to the water. Struggling with the fish, she managed to heave it onto the bank, and then clamber out after it. Killing it, she muttered ruefully Twice I've been soaked today, and once I didn't even get a fish! @esa @Snowstipe
(I'm making a thread for Splashpaw's final assessment, since she has all the requirements except that done twice) |

Hazelpaw seemed tentative and Rainydawn knew that slowing down and just getting used to the fish was a good idea. It helped to calm down before fishing since much of it was just sitting in place and it also helped to get used to the feeling of water on your paw and the slimy, slippery fish against it. She nodded at Hazelpaw’s observation and looked over at the younger cat. “Before we try to fish for real again, try to keep your paw still so that a fish will come up to it. We aren’t trying to catch this fish, just feel it against our paw so we know what it will feel like when we scoop it from the water.” |

A soft, slippery creature wound around Rainydawn’s paw as she watched Hazelpaw. Nodding slightly and offering an encouraging smile, the warrior waited until it seemed that her apprentice had come into contact with one of the scaled creatures before allowing her own paw to retreat from the cool liquid of the pond. “Do you feel prepared to try to fish once more?” |
Re: Cattail Pond
Lotusheart led the way to the beautiful pond. She quite enjoyed fishing. She turned to Brightpaw.
"Do you know how to swim?" she asked. Hopefully the apprentice had some swimming abilities. If not, she'd teach her. @PeppermintRabbit |
Re: Cattail Pond
@Shadeleaf "I know a little bit, but not very well..." What Riverclan apprentice couldn't swim? Brightpaw thought. Well, at least Lotusheart is cool.
|
Re: Cattail Pond
Lotusheart smiled.
"Well, for now we could try fishing in the shallow." she suggested. Walking over quietly she sat my the edge of the pond. She turned to her apprentice. "Sit down next to me. Here we are against the sun so you don't have to worry about your shadow scaring the fish. Look for a glimmer of scales then extend your paw and hook the fish on your claws." she explained. "Don't worry if you don't get it on the first try." @PeppermintRabbit |

At her question, his whiskers twitched in amusement. "Why didn’t you 'show me how it’s done', o wise warrior Slatesting." unfortunately he had no way to morph her name into an insult. "Woollylame". He snorted. "Go on, what are you waiting for?" he teased, pointing at the water. This would be fun. |
Re: Cattail Pond

“Great. Just sit back and wait for a fish and then scoop your paw in and out.” Rainydawn herself did as she suggested and sat back so her shadow wasn’t on the water. A flash of scales soon appeared and she shot her paw in and out swiftly, scooping a fish from the water expertly. It flew on an arch of water droplets to the ground and died under her paw. Tossing the fish to lay beside her other catch, the bengal mix turned to observe Hazelpaw. |

Re: Cattail Pond
[ @Corruptx ]
Rainydawn watched Hazelpaw closely as she performed a similar fishing maneuver but changed a few aspects. While Rainydawn wouldn’t recommend her method, it did result in a fish so the bengal mix nodded approvingly. “Good job. Let’s each try to get one more before we head back.” For her own last catch, Rainydawn managed to hook a surprisingly large bass- at least large for a pond- fairly quickly. She caught it mid-air in her fangs and bit down just enough to stop the flapping without turning the scene bloody. The limp body flopped down beside its brethren and Rainydawn paused to watch Hazelpaw before collecting her prey to get ready to go. |

Lotusheart smiled then steadied herself. "Yes, but now you have to bite it. It's food from Star Lan. We need to respect the prey but also not pass up an opportunity to feed the clan." she said. Aww, it was cute, though. |
Re: Cattail Pond
@Shadeleaf Brightpaw leaned forward and bit the fish until it stopped moving. "Who do you think will eat it?" She asked.
|
Re: Cattail Pond
@PeppermintRabbit
Lotusheart shrugged. "Who knows. You could, when we get back with more. Or you could give it to someone. I gave my firs catch to my best friend. My mentor at the time was neglectful, like your old one, and never spoke tome. So Foxpaw, now Foxblaze, who had a good mentor, taught me how to hunt. I caught a magpie mostly by falling on top of it and squishing it. It was a--" Lotusheart stopped speaking, getting distracted by a glint in the water. She pounced, hooking a big fish on her claws, swiftly killing it with one bite. "Fowwy! I faw a fiss im d wofw." she muffled out, holding a huge fish in her mouth. |
