Hazelpaw
__________

Hazelpaw plunged herself forward and into the needle-strewn undergrowth as she awaited her mentor, head craning half-way over her shoulder to cast a glance Rainydawn's way. Ah, Hazelpaw was so excited it just about seemed as if she couldn't contain herself: the fresh aromas of the pond bordered by an array of numerous glossy pebbles. From all around her swaths of cattails swayed in the wind, teeny bits of particles dancing off from the flowers and into the gentle zephyr that carried across the canopy. Exhilarating, ah yes.

Re: Cattail Pond

Smiling to herself at Hazelpaw’s exuberance, Rainydawn trotted along behind her. The seal point came to a halt beside the pond and watched with amusement as the new apprentice took in her surroundings. The area around the pond really was beautiful and Rainydawn found herself remembering the wonder of seeing places within the territory for the first few times again.

“Alright, we’re going to be fishing today. Come sit beside me and I’ll show you how to do it.”

Rainy dawn positioned herself so her tail was wrapped around her paws and she was sitting solidly yet lightly. Her shadow didn’t touch the water yet she was close enough to dart a paw fluidly into the water.

The russet-furred molly's heart seemingly fluttered with excitement as she followed the seal-point bengal a pace or two forward and toward the murky pond. Sucking in a breath of amazement, she situated herself right at the edge of a swath of cattails, just enough to not be completely engulfed by the plants.

"Wow, you're good at that!" Hazelpaw mewled observingly, yellowish-green eyes enlightening themselves with admiration for the warrior.

Re: Cattail Pond

[ @Corruptx ]

Rainydawn smiled and let out a little chuckle. She peered over at her apprentice for a moment before looking back down at the water.

“Moons of practice! Now what you want to do is situate yourself so your shadow isn’t on the water and that you are close enough that you can strike in one motion instead of having to move closer to the water first.”

A flash under the water caught her eye and she quickly thrust her paw forward and scooped a fish from the rippling surface, dispatching it on a flat rock before her.

“Then you scoop the fish out and kill it. You have to wait until you see movement before striking.”

Wow. Truth be told, this was all incredulously difficult to comprehend. Rainydawn was spitting out words one after the other, and Hazelpaw couldn't seem to understand even the tiniest bit of information. Nevertheless, the tingling sensation in her stomach moved her onward, motivated solely by the fear of disappointing her mentor.

"Uh... alright!" the young apprentice piped shakily up after a brief few moments of perplexed silence. "H-here goes nothing, I suppose." Uneasily she extended a shaded foreleg, eyes squeezing shut to avoid getting splashed with water as she reached a paw down into the waters. A rippling motion overcame the selected area of the pond - not from the movement of dipping her paw in, no - as a dark shadow slithered suddenly past. Shocked, Hazelpaw snapped open her eyes and extracted her paw instantly, tongue nervously ravishing her jaws. Well, dang - she sure screwed up.

Craning her head slowly to face Rainydawn, Hazelpaw forced a crooked smile. "S-sorry!"

Hazelpaw seemed tentative and Rainydawn wondered if she’d gone too fast. The younger she-cat seemed willing to try, though, so Rainydawn sat back and waited, eyeing Hazelpaw as she dipped her paw in the water and waited. The bengal mix highly doubted she would come across any fish with that method- the ripples would send them all running for at least a few minutes.

To her surprise, one of the dumber fish it appeared decided to inspect the paw. Unsurprisingly, though, it darted away as soon as Hazelpaw moved the limb. Then again, it appeared that Hazelpaw had moved her paw to avoid the fish. Ah so that was where they had to start. Chuckling softly, Rainydawn dipped her own paw into the water.

Slatesting led the tom towards cattail a smug smile plastered on her jaw. She was an excellent hunter, being a loner among the clan she was entirely devoted to her warrior duties when she was awake. Hunting was a perfected practice that took time but she had all the types of time on her paws. She pushed her way through the cattails with another swish of her tail before approaching the pebbled bank.

“Alright woolylame shall I show you how it’s done? Or you want to strut your stuff so I can teach ya how to do it the right way hm?” The warrior said promptly sitting down to groom her chest fur down. There was nothing wrong with looking fashionable while beating woolys butt.

After waiting a while and not seeing her mentor, Splashpaw decided to try again. When a fish came in range, she tried scooping it up with her paw, and this time managed to flip it onto the bank. Pouncing on it, she bit it's neck until it stopped flopping around. Moving a few fox-lengths down the bank, she waited for more fish to come near. @Snowstripe

"Yes, sir." Fenpaw meowed, followed a ways behind his mentor as to not mess him up. He opened his mouth, trying to decipher what Sparrowfrost had said about the different scents. The apprentice realized he needed to try more different and new fresh-kill so that he'd get better at telling the differences. After a while, Splashpaw saw another fish swim near. With a happy twitch of her tail, she swung her paw out, but just barely missed it. Unfortunately, she caught a branch drifting in the wind, which pulled HER into the pond. With a yowl, she went under, sucking up water. After thrashing about a bit, she found swimming wasn't that bad. You just ran in the water. As she swam, she marveled at all the fish. But her fur was SOGGY. So she swam to the bank, and scrambled out. Sitting in the sun, her fur began to dry. After what felt like forever, another fish swam by. Sticking her paw in a bit more carefully, she managed to pin the fish against the bank, and scoop it out. Killing it, she stretched, and continued waiting, wondering where on earth her mentor was. @Snowstripe

Reedwhisker sat down by the pond, calmly cleaning his paws. He saw Splashpaw hunting the fish and purred.

"Nice catch! But you need some work on technique. Do you want some tips?" he mewed standing up and shaking out his fur. "You don't seem too comfortable in water either!"

Reedwhisker licked his nose, happy to train again.

"Alright! So you've got to be prepared. You've got to focus on the fish and be in the right position.Like this!" Reedwhisker exclaimed, crouching near the edge of the pond. He leaned his weight onto his back paws, ready to pounce. Keeping his head clear of the water so it didn't leave a shadow, Reedwhisker became still as a rock.

"It can be a waiting game since we have to wait for fish to come near enough. In the stream the fish have less control of where they're heading so in a sense it's easier there." his muscles were tense and taut. The flash of silver near the surface of the water was all he needed and he leapt forward swiping both paws into the water and flung the perch onto the grass. A sharp bite ended its flapping.

Got it. Splashpaw mewed at the demonstration of the position, trying it out herself. It felt a little weird, but maybe she wasn't used to it, and that was all. Seeing the special effort to keep the head back, she tucked hers almost in to her chest, but thought better of it. Watching as he snared the fish, she asked Why did you go in with both paws? Don't you fall in? Maybe she was wrong, but she wanted to make sure. She wanted to be a warrior before her sister! That would be cool. Or not, if her sister got mad at her. Who knows. @esa

Re: Cattail Pond

@gs29513

Reedwhisker was pleased about Splashpaw's curiosity. It made training apprentices way more interesting.

"Well you're right, it's harder to keep your balance but it makes it easier to get your claws into the slippery skin of the fish." he mewed, flinging the dead fish into a little ditch so that it didn't fall back into the pond. "It's a matter of choice and I'd personally rather fall into the pond than lose my prey."

He leapt into the pond and the water lapped at his chest. "Come on in!"

Foretoes shuffling anxiously together, the young molly followed suit - or at least made the endeavourment to - and touched a russet paw to the pond's surface. A few gentle ripples passed at the sudden movement, but then disappeared just as quickly as they had come. Instantly a shudder crawled down Hazelpaw's spine as she wriggled her foretoes in order to accommodate to the liquid's initial coolness. The briefest of moments slipped by before she at last was able to adjust.

"Brrr," she breathed. "It's cold." But even with how freezing to the touch these waters were, Hazelpaw still managed to keep her yellowish-green eyes trained on its surface. A few minutes of sheer nothingness swept by till the long-awaited shadow of a fish jiggled by. Sucking in a sharp breath, the adolescent apprentice let her forepaw stir gently around just in time before the silhouette drew itself onward.

"You want to be gentle, but quick and intent," she murmured observingly.

With that, she sat beside the water, and waited. Spotting a fish, she swung both her paws, and managed to grasp the fish. She also toppled in to the water. Struggling with the fish, she managed to heave it onto the bank, and then clamber out after it. Killing it, she muttered ruefully Twice I've been soaked today, and once I didn't even get a fish! @esa @Snowstipe

Hazelpaw seemed tentative and Rainydawn knew that slowing down and just getting used to the fish was a good idea. It helped to calm down before fishing since much of it was just sitting in place and it also helped to get used to the feeling of water on your paw and the slimy, slippery fish against it.

She nodded at Hazelpaw’s observation and looked over at the younger cat.

“Before we try to fish for real again, try to keep your paw still so that a fish will come up to it. We aren’t trying to catch this fish, just feel it against our paw so we know what it will feel like when we scoop it from the water.”

Hazelpaw
__________

Hazelpaw swallowed down the enlarging lump that had somehow managed to build itself up into existence from within the back of her throat. "Er, o-okay!" the abysinnian molly squeaked, an abrupt shudder to her voice. Then, rather quietly and to herself, she added, "Here goes nothing...."

With that being said, she stirred her paw leniently around the murky waters, heart fluttering with the anticipation of a fish. Eventually - after a few painfully long-term moments - a dark shadow wriggled by, and instantly Hazelpaw flexed her forefingers in the endeavourment to brush her paw softly up against its scales. Hopefully not enough to startle it, but enough to at least get an idea of how the slippery creature felt.

Ooh, she looked so smug. And he had a grin to match it. He was sure that Slatesting was a... decent hunter, at least. Woollyflame couldn’t see how anyone who was a warrior wasn’t a good hunter — that was just, like, not contributing. But little did she know, the Somali was an excellent hunter. Both land and water. At her question, his whiskers twitched in amusement. "Why didn’t you 'show me how it’s done', o wise warrior Slatesting." unfortunately he had no way to morph her name into an insult. "Woollylame". He snorted. "Go on, what are you waiting for?" he teased, pointing at the water. This would be fun.

“Great. Just sit back and wait for a fish and then scoop your paw in and out.”

Rainydawn herself did as she suggested and sat back so her shadow wasn’t on the water. A flash of scales soon appeared and she shot her paw in and out swiftly, scooping a fish from the water expertly. It flew on an arch of water droplets to the ground and died under her paw. Tossing the fish to lay beside her other catch, the bengal mix turned to observe Hazelpaw.

Hazelpaw
__________

Casting a sidelong glance over at Rainydawn to investigate her performance, Hazelpaw sucked in a sharp breath before at last mimicking her movements - er, well, rather trying to, at the very least.

Lifting up a russet-colored forepaw, Hazelpaw stooped a bit backward in an effort to avoid having her shadow catch on the surface. Then, with clement agility, the small apprentice immersed a forepaw into the waters and stirred it gently around. This lasted for a few good moments before at last a dark silhouette flicked by. Gasping, she motioned her paw into the act of a slash and - much to her relieved surprise - hooked the scale of one of the slippery creatures. Gritting her fangs, she dished the fish - was it a salmon? - out from the lagoon and tossed it hurriedly down onto the leaf-strewn mulch. Brows furrowing, she peered briefly up at Rainydawn before grabbing the slimey thing and dispatching it with a gingerly-done nip to its forehalf.

"Uh... Not bad, I guess?"

Re: Cattail Pond

[ @Corruptx ]

Rainydawn watched Hazelpaw closely as she performed a similar fishing maneuver but changed a few aspects. While Rainydawn wouldn’t recommend her method, it did result in a fish so the bengal mix nodded approvingly.

“Good job. Let’s each try to get one more before we head back.”

For her own last catch, Rainydawn managed to hook a surprisingly large bass- at least large for a pond- fairly quickly. She caught it mid-air in her fangs and bit down just enough to stop the flapping without turning the scene bloody. The limp body flopped down beside its brethren and Rainydawn paused to watch Hazelpaw before collecting her prey to get ready to go.

Squinching tight her lips, Hazelpaw extracted again a neat brown forepaw before tilting her physique slightly backward as she awaited a fish. At first, nothing, although - as usual - something did eventually happen to pop up. Brow quirking up, Hazelpaw whooshed a neat forepaw into the water and brought the creature up to her jaws, eyes squeezing shut to avoid getting splashed with the tiny bits of blood that erupted from its abdomen as she bit into it. Yeah, alright, she could get used to this, she supposed.
