as the patrol arrives at dawning woods, quillpaw spares a glance in icepaw and pondlily's direction. the irony of the younger molly being placed on a hunting patrol despite not knowing how to hunt makes his nose scrunch; then he's padding off in his own direction. his jaws part, trying to catch any scents. though, with the recent snow, it's difficult to make out anything specific. luckily, he catches a glimpse of fur in the corner of his eye and immediately drops into a crouch. it's a squirrel.

unfortunately for him, as he's creeping towards it, he doesn't notice a small twig in his path until he steps on it. he curses under his breath as the squirrel scurries up a tree. he supposes he could always scale the tree and catch it, but decides against it. parting his jaws again, he tracks the next scent he catches. stalking closer, this time it's a small vole, searching around for something suitable to nibble on. lunging forward, he swiftly kills the rodent. he's tempted to just settle for the vole and call it a day because his paws are freezing, but reasons that he should try to catch something else.

after a few moments of struggling to catch a scene in the muddled air, he eventually comes across a frog. what the amphibian was doing out in such weather, or how it was even still alive, is beyond him. no matter. in a quick leap, the frog is added to his catches, and he pads back to where the group originally split off.
