[Littlepaw]
WindClan Apprentice Tunneler

Lucky Duck T1 | The Collector

Growing curious of the situation, Littlepaw listened curiously to Dustbunny' instructions. Listen and dig?? She'd never thought of simply digging out the mice dens before, but that was genius thinking!! They'd really worked hard to make these tunnels something they could thrive in if necessary. The Tunnelers really were so cool!

Littlepaw beamed a bit at the thought before doing her part and crouching down near Fleetpaw. She could hear him scraping at the dirt and could feel some of it flicking back at him. She knew it wasn't intentionally, it was just part of the job, and she didn't mind.

The calico felt the tail tap and before she knew it, the squeaking became LOUD in the tunnel. She had to move quickly. Her nose and ears tracked down one mouse coming right at her. Littlepaw focused really hard and managed to calculate where it was in darkness. Dustbunny said she liked to squish them, but that felt wrong. Her paws were very small compared to Dustbunny's! Instead, with a precise snap, Littlepaw nipped the mouse as another slipped right past her paw and towards Fleetpaw.

She focused on trying to snag another, but it sounded like the others were headed straight for Windpaw and Fleetpaw and she didn't want to dart blindly towards them in case it ruined their hunts. Instead, she waited to hear if they succeeded in their hunts.

Use her ears. Good enough, she was good at that. Hunting in the tunnels seemed like a lot, but Windpaw was sure she'd get used to it. It already seemed so simple! She dropped to a crouch near Fleetpaw and Littlepaw, ears perked and paws ready to slam down on whatever rodent that scurried past her. Before she knew it, terrified squeaking filled the tight space, and she could hear Fleetpaw and Littlepaw go after the mice. Well, time to prove she was worth it!

Windpaw quickly brought her paw down onto a mouse, catching it in her claws. It wasn't as hard as she'd expected, to track the mice down with just her ears. It was quite easy, actually, and she managed to catch yet another mouse, this time in her jaws. Foolish creature it was, to zoom right past her muzzle. Woah, she was good at this! Of course not perfect, but she was definitely getting the hang of it already.

Re: Into the Underground

Dustbunny stays back and observes the apprentices work as a wonderful team to catch the mice. Her eyes honed in on Fleetpaw as the tom used his tail to signal to the she-cats to be ready. She couldn't get over how great they worked together as the mice fell to the ground. It wasn't often that cats worked together above ground to hunt prey, or that's what she's seen. So it simply made her day watching them together down here. Teamwork was paramount for tunnelers more than for warriors, in her opinion.

One of her paws came down heavily on the small body of a mouse as it managed to sneak away from the hunting apprentice. Her huge paws killed it instantly as apprentices finished their hunt. "The was fantastic. You all did a splendid job." She purred, noting that each paw had at least one mouse.

"The easiest way to hunt smaller prey is in the walls, but bigger prey like rabbits, groundhogs, and prairie dogs. Have to be chased down and caught. Hunting them down here isn't that much different from the aboveground; more or less the same techniques, only you have to be more careful with pouncing, and it takes more control as you don't want to run into any of the walls or bump your head when pouncing. You also need to know the tunnels like the back of your paw, I tend to use the tunnels to cut off escape routes and pounce on my prey when they least expect it, if I'm on my own." But that was something she had fun doing.

"If you're working with a partner, you can chase prey right into their paws. You have to be careful, as prey down here is more likely to fight back if you get them cornered." She remembers dropping her head to look at the mouse underneath her paw. "There is no particular hunting style or technique we use to hunt prey down here. I know Crowtooth's hunting style and mine are different, so you can always ask him for a lesson if wanna learn a different way." She'd offer to show them, but Windpaw wasn't as experienced as Littlepaw and Fleetpaw, and Dustbunny didn't want to leave her on her own.

"So that's the end of our tunneling hunting lesson, let's head back up. You can ask questions on your way back to camp if you have any. "

Re: Into the Underground

CW: this character often experiences symptoms of PTSD and anxiety.

That was...rather good! It was...exciting even! Exhilarating! Fleetpaw couldn't help himself from purring at how well they executed that plan - never having worked together before like and still being able to pull it off! In the dark no less! Even he, who never thought he could do anything right, thought that was impressive. Although...that was largely because Littlepaw and Windpaw were so smart and had such good reflexes. His role was minimal. Not that Fleetpaw was complaining! Never! He felt...the tiniest sense of pride in his menial accomplishment here. Picking up his mouse that he caught during the panic, he turned to face Dustbunny.

He felt...so warm at her praise, purring in response. The more he learned and did as a tunneler, the more he felt as though he had truly been guided to his place in the clan. Everything here felt like home, felt right. Like, even though it wasn't much, he was able to actually do something constructive here. It really dawned on him in that moment...how lost he'd be if that fire hadn't happened that day. If he hadn't teamed up to help Dustbunny dig to protect the clan. Oh! But he needed to focus! Dustbunny was speaking again! He shook himself and retrained his focus on his mentor, nodding intently even though he figured she couldn't see him.

Learn the tunnels...the more he was down here, the more he felt like these tunnels were a second pelt. His ear twitched at Dustbunny's suggestion. Learn a different way? From a different cat? The idea...made him feel a certain type of way. Almost like he'd be betraying his mentor's teachings. But, he knew that was ridiculous. Dustbunny was his mentor, and learning a different technique from another skilled warrior was not a betrayal to her. If anything, it would be to her credit, because her apprentices would likely be better trained. Should he ask Crowtooth for an additional lesson...? Or...would it be better to take what Dustbunny has taught him and work on...maybe developing his own?

Pwah! What technique could you possibly develop? Ah, that very rude but very correct inner voice again. The tall, skinny tom could only shrug in response. The voice was right. He could never hope to hone something that could be called a technique, but still...there was a part of him that really wanted to try. He dipped his head when Dustbunny said they were finished. He could hardly believe it! He couldn't wait to get back to camp and tell Fallensky and Cedarpaw about this adventure! Not to mention, this brought him closer to finishing his training! The tiniest bit of pride sparking in his chest, he angled his ears back to check on the other -paws before stepping forward, ready to follow Dustbunny. "I-I have...n-no questions." He mewed, his eyes carrying a sparkle of his excitement.

"That was SO fun!!" she'd chirp once the hunting came to an end. Littlepaw would grin, even though no one could see her, listening to Dustbunny's next set of words and letting out her own soft purr. Then, her mentor continued to speak and Littlepaw would shift through the darkness towards Fleetpaw's side. Her head would bump into his shoulder, "Great job!" she'd reiterate softly, before moving towards Windpaw's scent. She'd press her fur to her siblings, her tail flicking her affectionately while Dustbunny finished up speaking. She'd grab her mouse, ready to go.

Now, they'd return to the surface. She'd learned from the first lesson to come to the light slowly and to squint while her eyes adjusted. OH! Windpaw wouldn't know that yet!! She'd nudge her sister a little to catch her attention while they walked. "Make sure ya let yer eyes adjust slowly! Bunny said cats can go blind if they get up 'ere too quickly!" Littlepaw spoke gently around the mouse in her jaws.

Then, the return home. She'd stash her mouse on the prey-pile when she'd get there.
