It had been... a while since Petalrot had last been called out on a patrol. Much of that was bug's own fault, to be perfectly honest, bug had hardly volunteered, but when an enforcer tells you to do something... well, Petalrot would be remise if bug didn't follow orders. Not much of a leader or a go-getter, this one. He doesn't know much about either cat on this patrol, not their strong suits, their preferences in hunting... nothing but their names. This isn't a social outing, though, and Petalrot will simply br doing bug's job unless called otherwise.

"Yes, Rookfire," bug says with a dip of bug's head before moving along. The plan is to do some hunting. ShadowClan should never be low on food, and the prey scent here was strong anyway, so this shouldn't be too much of a problem.

Setting off into the underbrush, Petalrot quickly picks up the scent of mouse and follows it, making the catch easily. Bug still needs two more things, though, so time to set off and continue the search.

Briarsplash came bounding in, careening to a halt and making sure that Palepaw was right behind her. She'd wanted to challenge the young tom to keep up, but she certainly wasn't gonna let him accidentally be left by her and get lost. She paused for a moment, letting her breathing settle as she took a look around the evergreen forest; it was less shadowy than her Clan was used to, but it was perhaps the most prey-rich part of their territory. Besides, with the sun sinking slowly towards the lower half of the sky, long shadows could be found. It would be interesting to see how Palepaw would do with it.

She glanced down at the apprentice and waited for him to recover as well, trying to see how the run here affected him. It wasn't exactly a short distance from camp, and especially for a new apprentice, it might've been hard to scramble over all those pinecones and the uneven terrain. But good exercise nonetheless — some he'd have to get used to as he shaped up into a warrior.

After a few moments of allowing their breathing to settle, she tasted the air, getting notes of all sorts of prey about. This was late greenleaf, so the early chills of the distant leaf-bare weren't scaring away any prey yet. Without directly looking at Palepaw, she finally meowed simply, "Alright, kid... this is Dawning Woods, a newer part of our territory. Tell me what you see 'n smell."

Upon arrival at this section of territory, littered with evergreen trees, she turned to look to her patrolmates. “We’re here–now, you two youngsters, how much hunting experience do you have?”

Before they all toddled off to go hunting, she wanted to make sure that the both of them each knew what they were doing, and on top of that, she’d like for them to hunt in pairs with the apprentices, so as to make sure nothing bad happened to either of them. That was a rule that she’d lay out after finding out their experience levels, though.

[in camp]

'Awh yes! She'll take me out to hunt!' Palepaw quivered in excitement. To Dawning Woods they go! In an instant, Briarsplash picked up speed and ran out of camp. The little dilute calico slowly caught on and ran straight after. He made leaps and bounds with his little legs, trying to catch up to the larger warrior.

The ground was weird and bumpy. Nothing like running around in the clearing where its been smooth over by constant pawsteps and walking. Every stride Briarsplash took, he had to take two. One, two, three. This was a little harder than Palepaw would've thought. It was like an unknown variable every step of the way. No way of telling what's next. He could see Briarsplash pulling ahead and her tail was slipping from his sight.

One, two, three, four. It took a little longer than normal apprentices, but he was slowly getting the hang of it.

Four, five, six. He was getting the hang of this. No longer being left behind, he raced behind the warrior and burst out in a laugh of contentment. He's doing it! He was learning. Though it's not a huge accomplishment, but Palepaw felt a small sense of pride.

[ dawning woods ]

It was easier after being able to catch up to Briarsplash, but Palepaw soon learn a great deal of where he went wrong. The sudden burst of energy had drained him a little, causing him to gasp heavily upon arriving at the woods. Luckily, Briarsplash had given him the time to recover. While he gasped for air, he took this time to look around him. The woods, it was different from the heart of ShadowClan. It felt leafier, brighter...and oddly closer to the sun. He didn't realize it before but these trees...they were....MASSIVE!? Absolutely insanely tall. Palepaw thought they could almost touch the clouds.

His awe broken by a question that Briarsplash had proposed. What did he smell? Palepaw stopped and took a sniff in the area.

What was there...

"...Mouse! Um...lizards..." Pale began before inhaling another breath while turning around for a better sense. Feeling the wind rush against his fur, he murmured, "and birds! There are also birds here!"

Ok so Bleedingpaw and all his wobbly wonder was finding it a liiiiiiittle hard to keep up with the patrol full of adults and normal cats who could walk right but no way in hell was he asking them to slow down! He had to learn to get on their level eventually after all, clan life didnt slow down for anyone just because they struggled.

Eventually they got there though and though the golden bengal was a little clumsy he wasnt tapped out yet and was raring to do some hunting.

Briarsplash fluffed out her pelt a bit as she watched the young apprentice take in the new section of the territory, obviously brighter than the other shadowy parts he'd already seen, and staring in awe at the trees. Her whiskers almost twitched in amusement at the sight... almost.

She let out a 'hmph' and a nod of acknowledgement as Palepaw stated the prey he smelled; good. He at least had a decent nose on him. Briarsplash flicked her tail towards the nearest scent, where she could see a sparrow not too far away pecking at a bush, perhaps looking for berries. To the side of them was a lizard scuttling among some stones, and the rustle in some undergrowth indicated the direction of where the mouse was.

"You're exactly right. Good nose... that's the first part of hunting. Now, the next part is deciding which prey, and how you're going to do it..." She narrowed her eyes, assessing the prey he'd listed.

The bird was perhaps the closest, but those creatures were flittery; one step too hard and they'd be in the sky in a moment. And trying to get close enough to the bush without rustling it would be a challenge. Lizards were fun to catch, and this one was in the open and exposed on the stones, but they were very quick on their feet and hard to get a good grip on. And mice... their senses were very sharp and attuned, besides being a little hard to spot and grab with how small and quick they were. Any way, it'd be a challenge... she decided to give him the choice. Her gaze flicked back to Palepaw, looking both challenging and yet intrigued to see what he'd do.

"Hmmm... your choice," she mewed in her raspier tone, eyes glinting in the afternoon light. "Let's see how good your instincts are. But I will give you this first: mice will often sense and hear you before anything else. Lizards, more so feeling and smelling you. And birds... it can vary, but mostly seeing you. Although with any of them, one misstep can cost you the catch — which isn't as bad in early leaf-fall here, but in leaf-bare... each catch counts. You'd do well to put that into practice from the start."

She sat back on her haunches, curling her plumed tail over her paws, waiting to see what he'd do by instinct... then she could correct later.

The dark-furred warrior gave a nod to Pondpaw, and then to Bleedingpaw as he spoke. She had noted that he had lagged behind a tad during their trek out here, but she made sure to keep an eye on him so as to see nothing bad happened to the kid.

“Right, no better place to gain more experience than right here and now.” Midnightpath agreed with Hillstrider, giving him a brief nod of appreciation for his words. With a flick of her tail towards Pondpaw and Hillstrider, she gave them a quiet acknowledgement of them being paired together for this patrol before she turned to Bleedingpaw.

“You’re with me, then. I want you to stay in my sight on this patrol, don’t wander too far, alright?” A pause before she continued, offering the young one a smile. She did not want him thinking that she didn’t believe in him, she wanted to ensure that he knew she wanted him to be safe. “You go on ahead and try to catch something, I’ll be just behind you to keep an eye on you.”

Opening her jaws to taste the air, the apprentice caught the scent of rabbit at once. Her pawsteps silent and her scent blending in with her surroundings, Pondpaw darted through the undergrowth. There was a squeal of terror, though it was cut off abruptly. Bleedingpaw
Shadowclan Apprentice | He/Him | 7 Moons
Just a Scratch | Shadow Fiend

Ironic Pondpaw was worried over warrior being gentle with Bleedingpaw when he himself was among Dawnstars adoptive family and so oft held to her exacting standards and the two warriors he trained with frequently pushed him to the point of exhaustion on the daily. Though in their defense that was partially because Bleedingpaw refused to go back until he had to be borderline carried and collapsed as soon as he was back in camp. Brairsplash and Hawkbite were kind, not gentle, so maybe Pondpaw so new to shadowclans ways needed that more.

Who knows though, Bleedingpaw was already off slipping into the bushes with a "Ill stay close!" falling into his weird hunting crouch and wiggling through and under roots.

With his stealth (odd as it was) it took Bleedingpaw no time at all to find his first mark, nearly stepping on the mouse that didnt clock his weird movements as a cat stalking and so didnt run. Its mistake, and the rodent was quickly flopped on until Bleedingpaw could move his wobbling head to bite it.

The thrush gave more issue. It was right there, perfectly in reach on a nearby low branch but in the open so harder to get to.... Ok distraction time. Making sure he was downwind and hidden Bleedingpaw nabbed a pinecone (admittedly grabbing it took a couple of tries with his poor paw eye coordination) before rolling it away from him. It hit a tree with a thump and, not even waiting a second the tom burst from the bush as the thrush's head turned before it had a chance to be startled. The catch was..... messy, unable to aim the bengal kinda wrestled the bird down and broke its neck with his paws instead but it was prey.

Two catches down already! Now just a little breather and check in with Midnightpath before he continued.

Palepaw
◆ ShadowClan | 6 moons | [34/100]

Which one? Which one should he choose? This was his first time hunting and he really didn't have a clue on what to pick or how to go about it. The closest thing he had to catching something was when he played leaf catcher in the clearing with Thrushkit. Though that was the furthest thing from an actual prey.

'Well...leaves float around and comes from the sky. So...maybe I should go for the bird?' Palepaw paused, unsure, before glancing back at Briarsplash. 'Oh...oh!' It looks like Briarsplash is letting him try it out first. The little calico kitten dropped into a crouch, a not very good one, before trying to move forward silently. Perhaps thanks to his short legs, he managed to stay somehow balanced as he creeped towards the bush.

A little by little, he crept up slowly towards the bird. While nearing the bush, he accidentally stepped on something that made quite a racket. The sparrow was spooked and alarmed, but didn't fly. And this caused the pale little furball to hold his breath, frightened that he might scare it away. Okay...all he had to do was jump, right? 'Same as the leaf, same as the leaf. Jump to where you think the leaf will go. But where will the leaf go? This wasn't a leaf, it was a bird!'

[ Rolled a 11 ]
Barely...

Palepaw paused and right before his pounce, the bird started to fly. His claws barely latched onto the bird, it dangled a little but fumbled its way through. 'Augh!' He looked up at the flapping bird in distress. He almost had it, just barely. But barely didn't cut it and the sparrow had managed to escape.

Briarsplash watched silently from a distance, just a tad impressed. Well, almost. The 'paw had a little more instincts than she'd anticipated; either that, or the bird was just completely oblivious to the pale-coated creature slinking somewhat unceremoniously through the grass. He actually managed to snag it, but the sparrow was already gone, flapping rapidly through the air with a terrified squawk.

The Enforcer padded over, letting out a huff as she considered his form. "...You got alright instincts, kid. But your movements were too hasty, a bit sloppy. Of course, you haven't learned yet so to be expected — but ya did better than I thought, really," she grunted, a bit bluntly (but almost an indirect compliment of sorts. Hard to tell with her).

She instructed him to drop back into his hunting crouch, slowly circling his form with narrowed eyes. Using her fluffy tail, she tapped on his shoulders and haunches as she spoke, instructing him. "Drop low, putting all your weight in your haunches. It'll make your steps lighter. You wanna work on being able to glide across the ground almost soundlessly — like a shadow."

Briar stepped back to demonstrate; she dropped herself low, her fluffy belly just barely brushing the forest floor. Despite her stocky size, she managed pretty well, almost gliding across the grass with light steps with practiced ease. She wasn't the greatest hunter when compared with her battle skills (grace and stealth was never her forte), but she wasn't half-bad either. Especially after rigorously training to prove herself once she'd joined the Clan young.

The Enforcer then sat up, turning to face Palepaw. "Let me see you try that out. Oh, and next time you snag your claws on a bird... best thing to do is immediately slam it down to the ground to stun it, then go for the kill," she added with a slight smirk on her maw, one of her sharp teeth poking out. "Y'can't give 'em a chance to fly away."

The pale calico did light up a bit after hearing the older warrior's words. Next time! That's right, he still have next time to fix his mistake. He made a small note in his mind to slam the bird down. "Alrighty!"

He watched as Briarsplash dropped into a crouch. 'Augh, he was definitely doing it wrong.' So this was the time to fix it! Palepaw cleared his mind and directed his focus onto learning. He dropped into the crouch and tried his best to copy what Briarsplash was doing. Lower, lower, lower. His pale eyes lit up in excitement as he watched the Enforcer just glide across so smoothly and silently. But when Palepaw tried, he wobbled.

Something was clearly wrong. What was it? Definitely not enough balance but how could he fix it?

"Not too low..."

Briarsplash snorted a bit as she padded back over to the young apprentice, ushering him to raise up and stop putting his rear in the air. "You're gonna throw yourself off balance if you're dragging along the floor. Makes you walk awkwardly. And loosen up a bit... you wanna be firm, but being too tight will make you walk stiff and make that much more noise."

The Enforcer demonstrated the hunter's crouch again so he could see, flicking her tail to show how low and loose she was while still being controlled. She put her paw here and her tail there, trying to ease his form into the proper technique.

"It takes practice... so I wanna see ya doing it a lot," she rasped, giving him a firm nod. "Practice all the time, even when you're not training. Then you'll do it without even thinking."

That's what had done it for her; hours of practice, desperate to prove herself... not that she'd exactly advise the staying-up-late aspect of it that made her lose some sleep, but definitely encouraging the aspiring tom to make it his goal to get it down. That's how real and good warriors were made. That's how an outsider like her could become an Enforcer; the thought made her heart burn with a mixture of pride and determination.

"Once you got it..." She pointed her muzzle over to the lizard, curling her lip a bit in anticipation; it was still sunning on the rocks they'd seen earlier, nearby enough to be seen but not close enough to want to run away from the hunters yet. "I wanna see you use it on that lizard. Careful... they're slippery and get startled by the slightest sound. Remember, silent... like a shadow."

◆ ShadowClan | 6 moons | [38/100]

He watched the Enforcer demonstrate it again. The little one definitely had trouble learning, but one of these days, he'll get it. Hopefully. This time he tried to follow along with the diluted gray tortie, copying and mimicking every step.

Ah! Not too low! He lifted himself up a little, enough for his fur to slightly brush the ground but not resting his whole weight on the forest floor. 'And loosen up!' Palepaw did a little shake to relax and tail out for balance. 'Am I doing it? I think...I think I am!' He shot Briarsplash a bright look, eyes full of sparkles. 'Heyheyhey! I did it!' was what he wanted to say, but remained in a soft hushed tone, careful not to scare away the prey. "I'm doing it, right?"

It was somewhat successful, not really, but it was much better than before. Palepaw could balance a little better, but still seem to have a little trouble moving the way Briarsplash is. One day, he'll be like the shadows too; and to do that, he'll need a whole lot of practice.

The pale calico nodded softly at Briarsplash's suggestion. There was a lizard nearby, the perfect test to see if he'd learned. His pale eyes narrowed, and he dropped in the crouch he just practiced. Slowly. Swiftly. Or at least, as much as he can, Palepaw had crept forward. Avoiding all the forest floras, careful to not step on sticks nor anything that could spook the prey.

[ Rolled a 1 ]

Three....two...one! He jumped and launched onto the lizard. The lizard was wiggling in his claws! His eyes lit up with excitement. 'No way! I caught something!' The pale calico kitten wanted to jump around in joy and celebration, but first, he needed to kill it. Just as he's about to bite into the lizard, he found it missing leaving only a wiggling tail. Excitement drained from his face and despair replaced it. It was an understatement to say he was just disappointed, he was absolutely devastated and confused. "Wait! Wh- What? It was right here!"

Briarsplash let out a long sigh, shaking her head. Palepaw had been close; so close to the point where his miss was almost frustrating to her, on his behalf. She fluffed out her pelt and padded over, giving a grunt and wrinkling her nose at the wriggly tail left behind.

"Huh, yeah... I guess some lizards can do that. Sorta forgot about that," she huffed, pawing it for a moment with a shudder. Ew. The Enforcer glanced down at the despairing apprentice, letting out another gusty sigh. "Look, ya almost had it... just gotta be quicker goin' for the kill. Or you can stun it. And maybe your jump was a little poorly timed. But, uh... guess it's hard to add too much onto that when the darn critter can shed its tail as a last resort," she grunted, something like flat but dark humor in her tone.

Keeping down her annoyance down (her annoyance being less about Palepaw himself since this was his first session, and more about the circumstances), Briarsplash took in a deep breath and tasted the air again. Okay, their training had caused a bit of a ruckus and caused a lot of the prey to scamper off. But she was determined to at least try one more time to get him his first catch... she didn't want to bring an apprentice (especially one that wasn't hers!) back to camp empty-pawed. It would make her look like she didn't properly train him at all, wouldn't it?

And then... a whiff of a mouse. Perhaps that same mouse from earlier? Smirking a bit, the warrior motioned silently with her plumed tail, a silent signal to show where it was at. She leaned forward and quietly murmured, "Okay, look... I'm gonna scare the thing so it runs straight into your claws. You just gotta react quick enough to catch it. So maybe we'll at least get you somethin' to take home. C'mon... 'n don't let it get away," she added with a warning edge to her tone — not too seriously of a warning, but enough to let the apprentice know that she expected (or at least wanted) results.

Making a wide loop around, Briarsplash positioned herself just behind the bush that the mouse was scurrying in. She waited, looking at Palepaw to make sure he was alert and ready; once he was, she suddenly lashed out her paw, striking a branch of the bush and making the entire thing shake.

The mouse squeaked and darted out with wide, round eyes; in its mad dash of panic, it was careening straight towards the awaiting Palepaw. All he had to do... was not mess up.

◆ ShadowClan | 6 moons | [42/100]

Devasted as he was, it seemed like Briarsplash still have some hope in him. Maybe not hope, but rather, the same frustration he was feeling. The boiling mix of confusion asking the star why couldn't he have gotten that. For it to escape so suddenly was outside Palepaw's most wild imagination and his imagination usually goes beyond him. Do cat's tail fall off too? Was that why his tail looks a little shorter? Between utter confusion and wanting success, Palepaw dropped into the crouch once more. He needed to get this right. Well.. it was not a need, more of a want. He didn't want to disappoint the Enforcer any further.

It's alright, it just means I need more practice. And practice was the Palepaw's second most favourite thing after learning. No...it would be the third. Second will always be climbing random things. His paws tread the forest floors silently. Once again, he was careful not to spook the mouse in front of him. He got this! With his mind refreshed and bright eyes focused on the mouse, he was ready.

This time, Briarsplash chased the mouse towards him and it was a weird feeling. Never would he have imagined seeing the mouse run straight at him.

The mouse suddenly did a swerve and dodged Palepaw's first swipe. Of course. Did he expect the mouse to cozy up to him and run straight into his mouth? No of course, not!...actually...yeah, he kind of did by the way the mouse was originally running. Luckily this time he acted a little faster. The diluted calico swiped the mouse up into the air before biting down on it. 'I did it!' More like, they did it! As the group split up, Hillstrider let Pondpaw go off nearby to hunt, the tom scenting the air to find something to catch himself. The woodsy scent of mice caught his attention, and the warrior dropped to a low position to streak his way through the undergrowth. As the scent got stronger, Hillstrider slowed, ears swiveling towards the light scuffling in the undergrowth. In the distance, his sensitive ears picked up a short squeal that was abruptly cut off. Oh, someone must have caught something! Great! Focusing back on his prey, Hillstrider stalked forward until he saw the short grass move, the small brown forms of two mice skittering around each other as they foraged for food. With a great bound, Hillstrider shot forward and slammed his front paws onto the mice, killing them before they could utter a squeak. Straightening, Hillstrider grinned proudly at his catches. Alright! Looks like it was time to keep going!

[Hillstrider caught +2 mice!]

Burying the mice under some leaves, Hillstrider cast his senses out into the forest once more, picking up on the trail of lizard nearby almost immediately. He didn't wait to consider that maybe a lizard wouldn't be the best use of his time, the tom trilling with excitement at the possibility of catching something so quick. Large paws trotted over slippery ground towards a big rock, where a red lizard sat sunning itself on the weak sunlight. Hillstrider locked eyes with the lizard, blinking owlishly at it while it licked its eyes in a similar manner. Then the chase was on. The lizard shot away, Hillstrider a half-heartbeat after, one red and one orange as they streaked towards a crack in the stone where the lizard could escape. But Hillstrider was too fast.

Very much too fast. With a resounding CRASH! Hillstrider slammed his face into the rock at the same moment the lizard was caught by his claws, dying swiftly and plopping to the ground unceremoniously. Hillstrider groaned, limp on the ground by the rock, face smarting painfully. "Ough..." His vision swam with pain, a warm liquid dribbling down his face. "Yeowch."

[Hillstrider caught +1 lizard!]

Out of the corner of his eye, Hillstrider caught a glimpse of something slithering away into the undergrowth. What the... was that his lizard? No, his lizard was right in front of him! He frowned, but the motion made his face light up in pain again. He hissed, reaching down to grab the lizard (which also caused him pain) to return back to the others. Man, he musta hit his face real hard!

Picking up the mice was difficult too, but eventually the pain turned into a dull throb.

Briarsplash watched with bated breath as the mouse careened for the apprentice... and at once, something like an annoyed groan left her as it quickly dodged his claws. She was just about to grumble about how he'd even let that go when it had literally gone right into his paws—

But then, Palepaw surprised her. Eyes widening a bit in pleased surprise, the Enforcer watched as the apprentice quickly reacted and tossed the little creature into the air before biting its neck. She grinned, one of her sharp teeth poking out of her lip, letting out a huff of relieved satisfaction.

"Finally!"
She muttered exasperatedly, then quickly cleared her throat and straightened up. "I mean, uh... good work," she grumbled; she may not be the most graceful of cats, but bullying apprentices wasn't exactly her style. Even if she felt like she was gonna start ripping her fur out if this little guy didn't catch anything (especially for selfish pride reasons, though she wouldn't admit that, of course).

Briarsplash padded over and nudged the mouse, confirming it was dead. She flicked her plumed tail and nodded. "Your first catch, eh? Not entirely a solo one, but hey... we'll count it as somethin'," she mused. Even if it hadn't been entirely on his own, Briar knew well the thrill of catching something in your own claws for the first time. "Now we won't go home empty-pawed."

She narrowed her eyes and gazed around; their rustling had certainly chased away all the prey by now, and likely would be scattered farther out. And besides, her patience had been worn thin, despite her best efforts to keep it reasonable since this was a brand-new apprentice she was dealing with.

"Alright, kid... looks like we've scared away just about anything else we might find. Let's get you back before your mentor starts worryin' that I lost ya,"
she grunted, shaking out her pelt. "In the meantime, I wanna see you practicing any chance you get, y'hear me?" Her voice was stern, not anticipating any sort of answer other than a 'yes ma'am'. Thank the stars they at least had a mouse to bring back — even if she'd sort of cheesed it, her brief training session had still paid off, right?

With a flick of her tail, she managed a small grin, one last little test for the young 'paw. "C'mon... 'n don't drop your prize," she said in her raspy meow before leading the way back to camp; just like before, she started with a trot and then broke out into a run (still not too fast for the sake of his little legs, but enough that we was likely going to be sore tomorrow. He'd have to get rid of that kit-fluff softness sometime, right?).

Purrks: Silver Tongue(active) & Hulk Smash(inactive)
Midnightpath prowled behind the young tom, although she stayed mindful so as to not frighten away any possible catches for the apprentice. The catches themselves were messy, but effective nevertheless. It was almost amusing. A dedicated kid, that one, even with what he may struggle with. Good traits for a warrior to have, in her humble opinion.

Her nose twitched at a familiar scent–a mouse? Yeah, definitely. Noting her current location as well as Bleedingpaw’s, she diverted from their trek together to track down the little bugger. Stalking along the forest floor, with her entire body level with the ground below, her green eyes finally landing on her prey. Jaws parting for a moment, she steadied herself on her paws before she pounced, landing with one of her paws pressing the mouse’s tail to the ground. Quick to put it out of it’s misery, she nipped at the back of it’s neck, causing a satisfying crack to follow.

Thank you, Starclan. Her green eyes shifted up to the sky for a moment before she continued. Burying the mouse in a shallow hole to return to later, she headed off again, this time tracking down the scent of a squirrel–unfortunately, it was just about to make it’s way up a tree when she had found it. Still, dedicated as ever, she slowly crept close until she noted the twitch of the squirrel’s ears. Wuhoh. She bunched up the muscles in her hind paws and sprang upward, one paw lifted to smack the squirrel down from where it had begun climbing the trunk of a tree. Down it went with a quiet thump, and Midnightpath came crashing down just over top of it, clamping her jaws down over it’s neck until she heard the familiar little snap.

After retrieving her mouse, she returned to where she had left Bleedingpaw, which wasn’t very far at all. “Lovely job, c’mon then, let’s head back to meet up with the other two, shall we?”

Not leaving much time for the apprentice to answer her rhetorical question, she already began leading him back to where they had last seen the other half of their patrol.

Yeah, Briarsplash was right. Not solo but it still counts as something. His first, unofficial catch! Palepaw nodded eagerly, with eyes full of new vigor and excitement. He'll do better next time. He definitely will! The pale calico was prepare to make that happen, and to do that, he'll be practicing a whole ton.

It was getting late and the forest was probably empty by now, just as he thought, Briarsplash had suggested the same thing. To go home. To practice. Palepaw smiled brightly with promise, "Of course! I'll practice so much that no birds, no lizards will escape next time!"

And practicing was a promise that he will keep. So he picked up the mouse, and followed Briasplash home. Once again, they were on the run.

It was kinda funny, for being the cat with the balance disability who literally was prone to flopping around and toppling over at the drop of a hat Hillstrider was getting more wounded then him. Guess he wasnt the weak link around here after all and Bleedingpaw went to collect his mouse and thrush with pride.
He could even show his Mama and all his siblings and tell them he was soooooooo cool and collected and did it all on his own!

Well.... One could suppose it could be posited he was cool and collected, at least until the bat.

Walking by this big dark hollow tree towering nearby, trying to grab his prey the flash of his bright blond pelt alerted something living there. The golden bengal fur.... it was.... to bright, to loud, to active and soon enough the little creature BURST from the dark at that brightness to get it to stop!
Which, of course, meant things went down immediately.

"EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!"
"AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!!!!! GET IT OFF ME GET IT OFF ME!!!!!"

The little black form (no bigger then the apprentice head) of..... something had latched on and was not letting go, making this ungodly screeching noise that hurt Bleedingpaws ears and causing the golden bengal to flop around like a panicked fish trying to dislodge it.

Nothing worked, any help offered would meet an unfortunate result of getting smacked in the face by a wayward gold paw as Bleedingpaw writhed and thrashed around, limbs akimbo. No, in the end the only this to stop the 15 second panic was a lucky bite, Bleedingpaw crunching through critical bone leaving the bat dead on the floor. Because thats all it was in the end, a damn bat, not even a big scary dangerous one either.

The apprentice would be humiliated if he wasnt too busy wobbling to his paws, fur on end and scooping his caught prey to him, yelping "What was that thing!?" as one paw was leveled at the dead bat in front of him. Bleedingpaws fur was spiked in all directions, his vibe was harshed, he was rattled, he had no clue what just happened and he was about five seconds from deciding this wasnt worth it and running straight back to Mistlewhisker and the safety of the patrol place.

Pondpaw´s ears flattened at the sounds of the bat´s screech and Bleedingpaw´s combined. Whenever it had stopped, the apprentice grasped her rabbit and padded over. ´´A bat,´´ She mewed, tail tip flicking. ´´Tuftedtusk and I ran into one while we were hunting one time.´´

Her ears perked up at the sounds of rustling, and a familiar scent hit the former RiverClanner´s nose. Blackbird.

Eyes sparkling with excitement, Pondpaw leaped the undergrowth easily. She landed square on her quarry - a blackbird, as she had suspected - and killed it quickly with a swift bite to the back of its neck. With a purr, she jumped back over to Midnightpath, Hillstrider, and Bleedingpaw, setting her blackbird down beside her rabbit.

Hillstrider blinked as Pondpaw mentioned his nose was bleeding, the sunshine tom wincing as he tried to mumble around his catches. Oo, he might have to check in with Mossfreckle. His face really hurt. But! At least he got the lizard to show for it!

Speaking of lizards... Hillstrider caught a glimpse of something reptile-looking out of the corner of his eye. Pondpaw, Midnightpath and Bleedingpaw seemed to be still hunting, so the tom carefully dropped his catches and tip-toed closer to whatever was in the bushes.

Wait a second... that wasn't a lizard! Hillstrider frowned. That was the second snake he saw on this patrol. Sure, snakes weren't exactly uncommon, but... and wait just another second... Oh. "Hey guys," Hillstrider called, glancing over his shoulder at the rest of his patrol. "Check this out but don't get too close." The warrior eyed the bush again, noting the four other snake tails he could see. He didn't know which ones were poisonous, if any of them were, but this was odd.

He returned to the group and picked up his prey, once again flinching at the pain that blossomed across his face. Ough! Owch! "I've never seen so many snakes in one place--it must be a snake party."

He crouched down quietly, weight on his haunches to avoid startling the prey away. Darkice moved forward ever so slightly, his paws making nearly no sound on the ground, before pouncing forward as the little rat was distracted. He'd caught the rat with little trouble, claws digging into it momentarily before he clenched it in his jaw. "Good," he mumbled, barely audible due to the fact prey was in his mouth.

The sharp cries from Bleedingpaw had Midnightpath reeling from where she had been ahead of him, dropping her catches to instead swerve around to come to the kid's aid. She paused in her tracks, however, lips that had been curled into a snarl slowly returning to where they usually rest, upon realising that it was just a bat.

“Bleedingpaw, let me just—oomph! A paw to the face was what she received, so she stepped back with her head tipped to the side, face drooping with an almost weary frown. In an almost comical manner, she watched the tousle between the tom and the bat, seeing as she couldn't quite wedge her way in between them and the bat posed not much harm other than some loud shrieking. When the whole debacle finally came to an end, she suppressed a sigh as best as she could.

“Mhm, Pondpaw is right, a bat. Apologies, I would have helped but I just got a face full of paw.” She sidled up beside the young tom, hoping that her immediate presence would offer him a bit of comfort, though she did nothing more. Touch and comfort was not one of her strengths, if at all.

And then, as if to top it off, a little family of snakes had been spotted. Delightful. She opted not to step too close herself, flicking her tail gently towards the direction of their camp. “How's about we head home before we run into any more trouble? Make sure you have all of your catches. Hillstrider, take up the rear, please?”

Picking up her catches off of the ground where she had dropped them, she lashed her tail to signify that she was heading off, and began to lead her patrol back to camp.

A bat? ..... Bleedingpaw didnt like bats he decided. Hopefully they were edible, however the bengal bet that that the awful beastie tasted bad like frogs so maybe he'd feed it to Moonpaw. Horrible creatures deserved eachother after all.

He was a little ashamed in hindsight that he'd freaked out so badly over something apparently non harmful, even if bats were totally evil in his mind now and the little tom kinda shrunk realizing he'd smacked Midnightpath. "I- I am so so sorry Miss Midnightpath I shouldve been calmer and not reacted like that and hurt you. If you want to report me to Miss Mistlewhisker for punishment I accept my fault." Bad Bleedingpaw bad, you dont act like that!

Thuroughly wilted Bleedingpaw collected his catches and hurried after the leaving warrior, fighting to keep his wobbles in control so he wouldnt screw anything else up today. Plus, snakes sounded kinda awful, time to go home.

ROOKFIRE
[ he/him | shadowclan enforcer | purrks ]
since his patrolmates had just...sort of disappeared, and roachflare happened to be around by chance, rookfire made quick conversation with the tom and turned to go his own way. he certainly wouldnt complain about the warriors sudden decision to ditch be patrol, heck, he'd rather be here with just roachflare anyway, and that had absolutely everything to do with the fact that he was a nice lad and hazelstripe was literally peak annoyance condensed into one average sized cat shaped headache whilst he did not know petalrot at all. rookfire set out to attempt an even split of hunting and gathering partly because his roleplayer forgot what the original plan was, but also to keep his movement controlled and smooth. proper hunting was surely good battle training in a way as well, rookfire could imagine the thought process and expertise that went into being a good and successful hunter could help perfect and maintain certain skills necesarry for more rare or even just hard moves...
especially the stealth aspect of the whole thing was just plain appealing to the enforcer, besides the opportunity of observing their prey carefully and under pressure, it wasnt really as bad as he sometimes pretended it was. white marked jaws parted, he tasted the air, head turning to follow the faint scent of vole briefly before stepping forward in search of a fresher one.
white tipped paws parted the carpet of thick, sturdy bladed grass with a quiet rustling following every step, so quiet it blended into the chirping of birds and wild rushing in his ears. the next scent he picked up was familiar, mouse, not his favourite but something he at least knew to catch, and the scent was fresh.
the warm earthy scent led him towards a sunbathed spot in the clearing and the enforcer lowered his body into a hunters crouch, muscles tensing in anticipation before leaping at the prey with practiced expertise. large forepaw colliding with the mouses small body, actively pinning it in place, the dark tom leaned down to deliver a killing bite. quickly, the mouse was shuffled to where he had parted from roachflare and hastily covered by soil and lose greenery.

[ so...i decided this is just rook and roach now because petal went missing and no hazel reply in so long lol || +1 mouse ]

roachflare had been on a walk to clear his mind when he found rookfire looking a bit lost. while he wouldnt go as far as saying he liked the tom or considered him a friend, his past behaviour interacting had taken some of the fear new people usually brought him. by now, he wasnt really as on edge anymore and appreciated the specific pointers the older usually gave on patrol so it wasnt really a problem when he was asked to replace the enforcers patrolmates. this would be a quiet endeavour, both of them taking to their own prey or plants or whatever rookfire usually reappeared with and then return to camp in silence as comfortable as a walk with a stranger could be for him.
the tri colour tom moved through the greenery, his last thought regarding gratefulness of the others acceptence of his silence just passing in favour of sinking into the comfort of the hunt. he didnt enjoy battle, never really knew what to do with himself when faced with another cat, bared fangs and quick claws, prey was easier, more predictable. they didnt possess the ability to think as complex and he didnt get the opportunity to overthink every move in the quick progressing from prowl to hunt.
[ 20, 11, 2, 5, 7 ]
the scent of rabbit filled bugs mouth and multi colour paws quickly changed course, moving through the shadows with practiced expertise. bug wasnt feeling like himself today, distracted and not as hyperfocussed on his task as usual, easily catching the rabbit and a mouse after, but letting three more animals slip through. mildly upset and overall unsatisfied, bug returned to wait for rookfire.

_________________________________
following the mouse, rookfire picked up on squirrel. his least favourite was quick prey that could flee up pretty much every tree so he approached rather hesitantly, only putting into proper work once he was close enough to ensure the animals quick burst of speed wouldnt be able to leave him in the dust. it took three more chases and two more pieces of successfully caught fresh kill to tire him out to the point of quitting. returning to meet with roachflare and make their way back to camp.

Re: Dawning Woods

It was silent as a mass of muscle and fur broke away from the shadows, stepping forward. Dawnstar had slowed her pace after reaching the towering spruce trees that dotted the woods. As she hadn't located where all the snakes were nesting, she remained alert listening for any rustling of leaves ahead of her.

Rotton leaves resembled a carpet and sank unpleasantly underneath her paws. They smelt of mushrooms and wet wood, making her nose twitch. It simply reminded her that leaf fall was slowly setting in. If she left the snakes alone, they'd probably go away as it was getting too cold for them to remain out. However, the rats wouldn't. She could at least make use of the snakes while they were still around, they might save them a few bites from rats.

Dawnstar halted her patrol behind some thick undergrowth, able to see the main path, yet still out of sight. Dawnstar wasn't sure if the rats would turn tail and retreat if they spotted the patrols before they reached the woods. Her muscles stiffened as she heard the snakes slithering up ahead looks like they just avoided stepping on a nest of them.

"Rookfire, settle somewhere close, but out of the way." She told the medicine cat softly. She checked that she had all her cats with her before looking across to see if she could spot her mate's green eye among the foliage with her patrol. They had to wait until Briarsplash and her patrol arrived to trigger the snakes and the rats.

Starlingcall follows close behind Dawnstar, paws nearly silently stepping across the ground. Its green eyes flash in the dim light as it looks for any sign of movement. Their ears twitch and rotate, aware at every little sound. Their paws already itch with anticipation, but they force themself to stay completely still. They can wait for their turn to kill these stars-forsaken rats. And snakes. It was a little less excited to face the snakes.

As Dawnstar orders Rookfire, Starlingcall contemplates whether or not they should find someone to fight alongside, to cover their back. It narrows its eyes at the ground. No. It doesn't know anyone enough to trust them that much. They can cover their own tail, better than anyone. They can fight their own battles.

Pondpaw crouched within the undergrowth in between Dawnstar and Starlingcall, hoping that the surrounding smells of the pine forest would hide her own scent as a ShadowClan cat.

The muscles rippled beneath the former RiverClanner´s pelt, Pondpaw´s river-blue hues flicking around the woods in hopes that Briarsplash and her patrol would show soon. Birdpaw was on the Enforcer´s patrol, the blue-gray mackerel tabby nearly forgot. Hopefully the other apprentice - Pondpaw´s friend - would be okay.

A decently large patrol. Sounded good. Mistlewhisker was a worthy leader, and Silentpaw had to be the most capable apprentice in this entire clan. Foggymask... He wasn't keen on. Not one bit after that fight. He stifled his annoyance, wearing a rather blank expression as they left camp.

It didn't take long to get to The Dawning Woods. In fact, boiling in his own rage, it were as though he'd appeared there in a heartbeat. Rage - rage toward death? Rage towards a simply unpredictable situation? No. Rage towards these darned rats. These squirmy little creatures, that seemed to think they had some kind of business killing cats - ShadowClan cats? Absolutely not.

They were to follow Mistlewhisker and separate - then cover one side of the woods. Seemed simple enough. Oh how he dreamt of tearing into the rancid animals. Looks like things had come full circle. A fox, ravenous and wild, a creature he wanted no affiliation with, destroyed the rat's den not too long ago. It sent them running, and (probably) planned to slaughter every last one. Despite his hatred of the orange canid, he was here, doing the very same thing.
