Redheart hadn’t realized that he stopped breathing, and just noticed as he felt light-headed and could faintly hear his apprentice’s concerns. Shaking his head, he inhaled, then exhaled, and the warrior gave a smile to comfort Willowpaw. She seemed to be worried, too.

“Nothing, just couldn't wait to see you become a warrior,” he lied, cheerfully. He added, “I know the hunting seemed complicated at first, but I know that you will get a hang of it soon.”

Shadowfur emerged from the warriors’ den and sat down in the ShadowClan clearing. He was grateful they were back in their normal camp. Even more, he was eternally grateful to Dawnstar for giving him a pass this one time for the mishap with Hailpaw. She was right; he’d live with the weight of losing his first apprentice for the rest of his life. That was punishment enough. What happened with Hailpaw was a terrible accident; Shadowfur was punished by that alone enough.

He just hoped his Clanmates would eventually come around and see this as a horrible tragedy rather an an act of treason.

Today was rainy. But Darkkit still sat in her usual corner. These were just two very scientific observations that one could make just from merely looking outside, then identifying the insignificant creature that sat up against the wall of their camp. The mere shadow of a kitten that floated around like a phantom, and they would quickly look away. The triangular faced girl made many cats uncomfortable, but, did she, the epitome of not caring, give two craps whether or not her presence made someone uncomfy? Of COURSE not! Angular almond eyes of a baby blue shade watched the dutiful, sodden patrols leave, and only then did the thin, regal looking Bengal rise from her seat, and scrutinized the clearing, one den at a time. rainwater dripped from her long white whiskers before she turned gracefully on her heels and padded back to the nursery.

But did she really want to go in? It kind of smelled in there, and watching cats being born was not her favorite past time. Resting her chin on the edge of her nest and trying not to see the wet little cats being born. Because it looked quite uncomfortable. The Higher Powers must hate she-cats, to make the job of reproduction so painful. One would think that that career path would bring comfort and joy, not getting round and grumpy and sick all the time. And most kids weren't even worth the trouble, they usually just cried and got into trouble, anyways.

It sounded like a rotten deal. No recognition, lots of pain, and a pack of gremlins who were your responsibility. Darkkit would probably never have children unless she didn't get fat, it didn't hurt, they were well behaved and left her alone. Oh yeah, and only if the Clan treated her like a hero because of it. What else was the point?

Maybe, she realized as she retreated back to her corner, she was putting too much thought into this. She had a long, LONG time until she had to even begin to think about... that stuff, so she moved swiftly along mentally. Maybe someone would venture closer. And maybe they would TALK to her. (oooh, scary!) She didn't mind either way. Honestly, she was perfectly fine just with herself. She was quite amusing, after all.

"Okay!" She brightened up, and quickly a memory flashed before her eyes, suddenly she remembered she had either done this exactly or she had done something similar, when she caught that sparrow a few moons ago. Their light conversation had been long enough to bring some of the prey back, and she noticed a black looking bird upon a branch some ways away. Quickly giving her mentor a sign that she had found something, she crawled up until she was almost under the branch, and easily leaped up catching the bird, as she now knew was a crow, in her maw. Her anxiety had chased some of the memory of what her mentor had done away but she thought is was something like this. She landed silently and she had already killed the bird so if she did mess up, she could try again without having to either move or wait.

Willowpaw almost missed the solomn looking tom, and yet, she always seemed to notice everything that went on around her. He did look pretty distrought, and Willowpaw who was slowly getting over her social anxiety, was a bit tempted to go up to him. Of course with how socially anxious she still was, she had a hard time convincing herself to actually commit. The multi-colored she-cat took nervous steps to him. "H-Hey, I heard what happened... That wasn't really fair to you or... Hailpaw? Was it? That shouldn't happen to any cat, no matter what, I never knew them but I wish I did. Makes you realize what can happen to somebody in just a few days, but that's what comes with the risk of being in a clan I suppose." She murmured in a quiet voice, sitting next to the tom in what she hoped to be a comforting manner. She didn't look at him, just kept her gaze to the sky, soon perhaps she would find the star's of her parents, even if they were rogues.

The fluffy white she-cat had been off to the side of the clearing, giving herself a thorough cleaning, when dark fur emerging from the warrior's den caught her eye. Shadowfur. She was infinitely curious as to what had actually happened to the warrior and his apprentice. Perhaps she should go talk to him. It was her job, after all, to listen to her clanmates.
Rising to her paws and giving her plumy tail a quick flick, Spiritfire made her way over to the tom.
"Hello, Shadowfur. Mind if I join you?" She questioned, giving her fiery eyes a friendly (or as friendly as she could muster) blink.

Moonkit (she/her)
Black calico with half face ginger and amber eyes

•─────⋅☾ ☽⋅─────•

Moonkit woke up at dawn, the time when the first patrol was sent out by the deputy. As soon as she got up and split up from her family's sleeping mass, she felt a damp chilly breeze seeping through the nursery and reaching her little bones. But she liked rain; it was like Starclan was sending them precious water not only to survive the long dry season, but also to clean the forest. She headed toward the slice of grey sky surrounded by the thorn bush of the nursery, but she stopped just a few fox tail lengths back.

A grey-black, spotted kit was crouched in a corner and Moonkit thought that she was trying to become a shadow herself, since she blended herself completely in the shade of that spot. Well, even if she doesn't try, she really looks like the spiky shadow of the thorny branches. While she was staring at her, the kit suddenly turned and fixed her cold gaze on Moonkit. She didn't look friendly as other kits in the nursery, and she felt her black-orange pelt prickle in unease.

Shadowfur swallowed hard. “I should’ve known better than to take such a young apprentice to a place like that,” he growled. “Hailpaw was too undisciplined for his own good. It ended up costing him his life.” He bowed his head solemnly. “As his mentor, I should have seen that. But his death is punishment enough for that mistake. And the scorn of most of my Clanmates.”

He turned his gaze to his Clanmate. “But it won’t do me any good to wallow in self-pity. I appreciate your understanding. A lot of our Clanmates will take time to see this as just an accident.”

As he finished speaking to the apprentice, Shadowfur noticed Spiritfire approaching him. He hoped she wasn’t coming to make a snide comment, or to box his ears like that one idiot had tried to do at the Clan meeting. Shadowfur was grateful Dawnstar had been there to break it up; he didn’t feel like fighting any of his Clanmates at this point.

Relief washed over him when her arrival was peaceful. He nodded at her question. “Of course you may join us. It’s relieving to have some Clanmates who are still willing to give me the time of day.”
