With Shadepaw quickly approaching the end of his apprenticeship, Finchwhisker had been looking to take in a second apprentice, and Finchpaw happened to be a promising candidate. Unfortunately for Finchpaw, his past training sessions with Shadepaw had set the bar quite high. Plus, Finch was undoubtedly one of the best names a cat could have, so that meant his expectations for this apprentice who shared his prefix were even higher.

After a simple nod in greeting to his apprentice, the dark tabby took a seat in front of him. "We'll be doing some basic battle training today, as I assume you've had no prior battle training?" Finchpaw was essentially a brand new apprentice as far as he was concerned, so he doubted there was any way the younger tom knew anything substantial, but there was no harm in asking. Giving a moment for a response, he continued on. "Whether you know anything or not, I want you to begin by attacking me, so I can see what you've got. If you can manage some basic maneuvers from pure instinct alone, we can skip straight to some more intermediate moves." Pausing for a moment, the deputy took a couple more steps back. "Don't you dare unsheathe your claws. Begin whenever you're ready."

Finchpaw sat frozen in focus as the deputy spoke. He took a second to admire the older tom, he could tell from his physique that the tom was powerful.

I’ll be like that he told himself and his ear flicked with determination.

As Finchwhisker asked about this former training Finchpaw blurted out a dry “not really.” He recomposed himself and tried again.

“I haven’t had formal training but I’ve had practice fights with the other apprentices.” He stated. He didn’t however mention that the said fights were not exactly under supervision, nor technically wanted. But that wasn’t something he was gonna disclose to Finchwhisker.

As Finchwhisker asked him to attack, Finchpaw gave an excited lash of his tail. He was going to show Finchwhisker that he was worthy of having the same prefix as him.

He crouched down and studied the deputy. After a moment of silence he sprang forward, going for Finchwhiskers legs, hoping to unbalance the older tom.

buzzardpaw attempted to dodge the attack, stumbling to the side a bit only to get kicked in the side of her stomach. she inhaled sharply at the sudden ache, almost flipping forward but stopping herself by jumping to the side, only to then fall to the ground on her side. (stars, that hurt!)

not taking her chances and allowing adderflower to attack again, she closed her eyes and kicked her back legs harshly in hopes it would hit her mentor. "see? you didn't hurt me at all!" she cackled, opening one eye to see if any of her kicks had hit the black and red feline.

she quickly pushed herself up from the ground, leaping a few pawsteps away to gain distance. she turned around to look at her mentor again, fur bristled slightly. yeah, this was a bit more intense than the play fights she had as a kit or that time she angered a loner.

Adderflower felt her legs connect with the apprentices stomach and saw her small body fly a bit off the ground, not as high as she would have liked.

Buzzardpaw had managed to dodge her a bit, but clearly not a enough. Just as Adderflower leaped again, Buzzardpaw kicked her hind legs at her and Adderflower felt claws scratch at her lower legs. Not terribly deep but just enough to lower her attack speed.

Adderflower stumbled slightly but quickly regained her balance. She glared up at her apprentice, a small smile starting to form on her face.

“Oh yes I couldn’t tell at all. How does your chest feel?” She drawled. She eyed Buzzardpaw, from her bristled fur to her crazed look on her eyes.

“I have to say that despite not knowing how to sound like a warrior you at least have some instinct. Using your hind legs was smart.” She began to circle Buzzardpaw.

“Your speed is not amazing” she state, “but using surprise is going to be your strong suit. Let’s start over. Show me your crouch. And this time make it’s strong, if I see you shaking or not having correct balance I will cuff you over your ears.”

buzzardpaw let out a puff of air at the question. her chest didn't feel so good, but could be worse, with the aching in her side and the thumping of her heart. "feels fine." she replied with a small sniff, frowning at the (in her opinion) disturbing smile that her mentor had.

circling didn't help, only frowning more. seriously, this cat was such a weirdo..jeez. her ear gave a small twitch at the feedback, a bit annoyed at the speed part and how she'd be cuffed on the ears if her crouch wasn't almost perfect. "considering you suddenly jumped at me, I think my speed was pretty okay." she huffed. her speed was just fine for someone her age and size! she even considered it good!

thinking back to how she would crouch when she would hunt bugs as a kit, she dropped into a crouch. her paws were s bit too outwards, stomach a bit too high from the ground, tail s bit too low-- all small flaws that she didn't seem to notice, but made the crouch, honestly, bad.

Adderflower stopped her circling, her face showing obvious annoyance at Buzzardpaws display.

“An for a split second you almost had me impressed” she snorted, “your speed was a good instinct however had we been in actual battle you would be crowfoot.”

Her paw shot out and swipped at Buzzardpaws paws. “Pull your paws in more together.” She snapped and she continued circling the apprentice. As she reached Buzzardpaws side she shot out her paw again and cuffed her ears. “Your stomach is too high, bring it lower and focus ur muscles. Imagine as if someone was clawing you from underneath, your want your body hard as a rock.”
She finished her circle behind Buzzardpaw and firmly pressed her paw up on her tail.

“Now hold that position.” She declared as she once again started circling, “and when you feel ready jump as high as you can.”

buzzardpaw let out a scoff, quickly bringing her paws inwards once they were swiped. she tilted her head to the side as an attempt to dodge her ears getting cuffed but was too slow, lowering her stomach and glaring at adderflower. act like she was getting her stomach clawed?

tensing her muscles, trying to make her crouch as firm as she could, she flexed her claws into the ground. "stop circling me, it's like you're planning to kill me, weirdo." she went silent for a second after that, gaze falling to the ground, then rolling her eyes. knowing adderflower, she would attempt to kill her or something.

letting her claws dig into the dirt, then slide back out, she held the position for a few heartbeats. jumping as high as she could shouldn't be a problem, it was just jumping.
with a tiny wiggle, she leapt from the spot she had been crouching in as high as she could manage, about a rabbit length from the ground. she landed with a slight tumble forward, but caught herself from tripping. "don't say that wasn't good. I know it was." she said, slight snap in her voice as she looked back to adderflower.

“Do you feel intimidated by my circling?” She asked, not bothering to stop. “That fear or uneasiness that I create for you is exactly the presence you want to create around your enemies. Take this as a lesson.”

She watched with satisfaction as Buzzardpaw fixed her form and even jumped half decently.

“Not too bad kit,” she meowed. “Now do it again but slash at the air with both paws. Keep your claws unsheathed as it’ll help you grip the ground as you land, that and slice your future opponent.”

Leaffeather took a quick look around, yes she was already a warrior, but it couldn't hurt to practice her moves. She started to use her pouncing motion she used when hunting most of the time.
