Coastbreeze was honestly stumped at his question. He hadn't actually thought this far ahead in his 'training plan' for Mosspaw. He opened his maw and then shut it once more. "Er, oh!" He thought back to his own training, taking a page from Splashfury's book. "I want to see what you've got, so let's do a quick little spar. Nothing too crazy, claws always sheathed. We won't be hurting each other, so no worries, okay?" He was beginning to catch on that Mosspaw liked that little bit of reassurance. "You take offensive and I'll do defensive."

"Alright, I'll try," he says, looking over his mentor. He honestly has no clue where to start, so he takes some time to assess the situation. He's not too far from Coastbreeze, but the other tom is obscured by some reeds. Mosspaw considers running around to try and get him from behind, but no, that wouldn't work, he's not fast enough. He decides to rush in towards his mentor's side, aiming for some sort of headbutt thing.

Coastbreeze got to his paws at Mosspaw's confirmation, preparing himself for the mock scuffle. He peered through the reeds, watching Mosspaw, wondering what his first move would be.
The tom smiled as Mosspaw took a direct approach to attack by rushing him. However, the apprentice likely wasn't looking where he was aiming by lowering his head for a headbutt, so the warrior jumped to the side to avoid it. "Eyes on the target," He meowed. "Especially when they know you're coming for them! Don't give them an easy way out." He nodded his head for Mosspaw to try again.

Re: RiverClan Training Island

[ @Arie ]

Goosefury paused at the bank of the river, tail flicking back and forth as he peered across the water at the training island. It wasn’t too far away, and although he was a little nervous about having to swim out there, it wasn’t himself he was worried about. He was worried about Eelpaw. His apprentice had her tail wound tightly around his hind leg, and he spared a glance down at her. “If you can’t swim, I can carry you on my back,” he offered. “It’s not too far out, but it can be kind of deep there in the middle. You gonna be all right?”

Arie September 25th, 2020 09:55 AM

Re: RiverClan Training Island

-- @Slushie --

Okay. She could swim though. But... her skills were not perfect. But for some reason, she had the courage to... to try. She would attempt it and if she went drowning, well... Goosefury wouldn't let her drown. He wouldn't, she knew that. So, knowing that in order to keep himself from drowning and to rescue her if she did end up drowning he would need his leg; she released it slowly with her tail before gazing across the water to the ground they would be training on. Okay. She could do this. Maybe. "I can swim. I think so at least. So... I'm going to try." She liked the sound of that word. Trying. That was what she was going to do for the rest of her life. Try. Try to be a good warrior... try to find her family maybe. And hopefully, try not to be abandoned again. But... she'd said she was going to try so there was no other way than... like try. So walking to the bank she slowly slid into the water, finding her body going on auto pilot and easily keeping her up even despite the mild current. She did it! She was doing it! And wasn't dying. But she couldn't help but send a small worried glance Goosefury's way. He was coming right? He wasn't going to leave her out here by herself was he? But... but she had to make it to that island and so, constantly turning her head back and forth - to check that Goosefury was still there and not gone and to check where she was going - she slowly crawled up onto the bank before turning properly around and waiting for her mentor, yellow eyes watching his every move, rarely blinking fearful that he would disappear if she did so. Blinking made cats disappear. She'd experienced that before.

Cricketchirp jumped back to get away from any swipes Sootflare might go for while he was up close, but wasn't quick enough to escape his mentor's jaws as they reached for his scruff. He grunted a bit and wriggled, paws barely touching the ground at Sootflare's natural head height.
He only ever reached the top of the largest tom's shoulders if that.
He was, in all honesty, a very tiny cat.

Sootflare
__________

It was time to put this little sparring session to an end. With Cricketchirp's scruff in his maw, Sootflare threw the last of his energy into, frankly, chucking the smaller tom into the water surrounding the training island. It wasn't a terrible difficult effort, given Cricketshirp's smaller size but flinging any kind of weight like that was enough to send a cat stumbling and so Sootflare did, sending himself into the shallower waters.

The spotted warrior smirked at her excited apprentice before she started explaining what they would be doing. "First I want to see how quickly you can swipe at an enemy and avoid getting yourself hit. So with your claws sheathed I want you to try and swipe at my ears and I'm going to try to do the same, so you'll need to dodge my paws," Leopardblaze instructed, making sure to emphasize keeping her claws sheathed, she didn't want to have to take a preventable trip to see the medicine cat.

Oh! Fun! She got to hit her mentor! And practice not getting hit! Her claws somewhat involuntarily sliding out, Rushpaw quickly snapped them back in, hoping her mentor hadn't seen. She didn't want to claw Leopardblaze, no she did not. Firmly shoving the claws farther into their sheathes, she swung her paw at her mentor's ears, with as much force as she could muster. Then, in a bit of a preventative measure, she dropped to the ground, lying flat on her belly. Then, realizing just how squashed that could get her, she scooted backwards, her belly fur undoubtedly covered in dirt by now. A few tail-lengths away, she looked up, saw no squashing butts, and then stood up, with a little squeal of excitement. @Leopardblaze

Sparring with her apprentices' was always fun for the spotted she-cat, she loved seeing their skills progress over time. She ducked her head slightly, feeling Rushpaw's smaller paws sweep over her ears with some force and at the same time her paw flashed outwards, lightly batting at Rushpaw's ears before her apprentice dropped down and quickly moved backwards. Leopardblaze let out a purr, "That was good!"

And then her mentor said it WAS good! She had done well! Her excitement reaching an almost all-time high(right after her apprentice ceremony) and with a spurt of energy ran in a little circle where she was. Coastbreeze keeps still, though his gaze still follows Mosspaw as he circles around him. He noted that his apprentice was quicker this time, less hesitant and more focused - so he was able to land on the warriors back. He managed to not crumple due to the other being much smaller. He had two options, either buck him off or try to squish him off. Choosing the latter, Coastbreeze rolled onto his back - hoping Mosspaw would know to leap off before getting pinned underneath him.

Mosspaw unfortunately doesn't see this next move coming and is crushed under his mentor's weight with a surprised squeak. He scrabbles at his sides with sheathed paws, nipping at his scruff in an effort to get him off.

Coastbreeze hopped off of Mosspaw, turning around toward him once more. "Okay, quick break!" He meowed, offering a paw to help the younger tom to get up. "That first attack was very good! Attacking from behind is a good tactic, as is landing on an opponent's back. That is really good for facing an opponent bigger than you, and even better if your fighting with some other apprentices. However, if you aren't heavy enough to get them down right when you land on them, you need to be on the watch for them to do what I did or even to try to buck you off, okay? And be sure to keep in mind what to do if anyone else gets on your back!"

Will little effort Cricketchirp was tossed into the water.
With an undignified squeal eventually choked off by the inhalation of water going straight to his lungs and burning him inside out, his legs kicked and thrashed wildly, desperately seeking to get a hold on anything solid, splashing the water all about and not making his situation any better.
In the brief moments his head breached the surface, he barely got in a breath of air, as his splashing put enough moisture all around him he breathed it in even as he surfaced.
Suddenly the lessons weren't going so great.

Lotusheart led the apprentices to the training Island. Since Badgerpaw had a neglectful mentor, something Lotusheart could relate to, she decided to help her with training. She knew Wolfpaw did not enjoy battle training but he hadn't really worked on it much, plus she was afraid he'd harm himself while hunting again.
"OK, um, guys. Time to train." she mewed as confidently as she could. She didn't want Badgerpaw to get a bad impression of her and, as usual, she was really shy around new cats.

Wolfpaw was actually pretty excited to train today and happy Badgerpaw could come along. Brightpaw could also be coming which would be even greater! Battle training wasn't his favorite but it still could be fun.
"I'm guessing we're doing battle training, do you know any moves Badgerpaw?" he asked, "Also Lotusheart, it was really kind of you to let her come along, you're a great mentor!" the tom added.

"Hi Brightpaw! This is Badgerpaw, she's coming along too" The tom smiled.
Everyone was here, hopefully this wouldn't be too stressful for Lotusheart, judging by her expression she didn't seem the most confident but Wolfpaw was sure everything would turn out great. The ideas sounded good, Wolfpaw took a moment to imagine how it would play out, one cat springing on to Lotusheart while another attacks her and while one cat pounces on her from the river.
"Sounds good, i'm fairly good at swimming so i'll be the sneaker, who can jump best here?" the gray tabby asked.
The sun seemed to shine brightly that day, leaves rustling in the wind, a great day for some swell battle training! Wolfpaw had never participated in an actual fight, the thought of cats wrestling just to win some trees while blood spilled on the autumn grass disgusted him. He knew he would have to fight some day and he dreaded that day.

Lionstar spun on his paws as soon as they hit the training island, expectant gaze on his apprentice. "I want you to show me your best defensive stance. Try to spread your weight - keep yourself balanced so it's hard for you to get knocked over.

"Once you're in it, I'm going to smack you. Not toooo hard, just enough to test your distribution. We'll go into some defensive maneuvers and counter attacks once you have this down. Any questions?"

Gosefury watched anxiously as she slipped into the water and made her way to the island. Then, with a deep breath, he followed suit. The water closed around his legs and then his chest and then then the base of his neck, and his eyes were narrowed as he tried not to freak. Maybe his fear of the river wasn't as bad as it used to be, but it was still there. Under the surface. Haha. Under the surface. I'm so funny. Maybe it was a good thing Eelpaw hadn't asked to be carried across. Goosefury was pretty sure he would have drowned.

When he finally emerged on the other side he shook himself off, sending water droplets flying. "Okay, now that that's out of the way," he muttered to himself before looking up at Eelpaw. "What were you thinking about starting with, offense or defense? I'll let you pick."

Right. Their spar was over and they could move onto more in depth instruction - he had a pretty good idea now of what Cricketchirp could do. All they had to do was swim back to shore.

...

Why wasn't Cricketchirp swimming back to shore?

Seeing the small body of Cricketchirp thrashing about in the water and subsequently sinking below the surface invoked memories of the clan-wide swimming lessons - the first iteration in particular - and Sootflare couldn't help but let out a sigh. Without much urgency, he waded over and hauled the warrior up out of the water by the scruff.

"Clearly," he meowed, words muffled through the soggy fur, "We have other things to work on here."

Instead of returning directly to shore, Sootflare stood there in the water and maintained his grip of the warrior's scruff. It was time for an impromptu swimming lesson.

Cricketchirp had barely been getting better and starting to manage to move foward when Sootflare came by and plucked him up and out of the water. Well, mostly out. He was still in the water, the water lapping at his belly, nearly reaching his elbows, where Sootflare was.... less stuck in the water.
"I would hope I would have done better if it hadn't been such a surprise, but I really doubt it."
He coughed a few times, painfully.

After a few moments she continued with her lesson, " Now we're going to try something a little different that yo having to react to me, since this will be an offensive move." Giving Rushpaw time to settle down she continued, "With this one, you lunge at a warrior, they might duck, and if they do, you must be prepared to dive down and knock the air out of their stomach with your paws." She demonstrated on a nearby bracken bush, lunging at the bush, before quickly diving towards where the belly of a cat would be allowing her body to slide before rolling onto her side and striking out with her paws before quickly rolling back onto her paws and leaping away. "Now you try," she meowed, flicking her ears over to the same bush.

(You guys can attack now as the plan thing isn't working out. I suggest you keep track of post order otherwise it'll be super confusing.)

Lotusheart spotted the apprentices having some trouble.
"You guys don't need anything fancy. I suggest you just send attacks at me one cat after the other and try to coordinate." she mewed, steadying herself and waiting for the first apprentice to strike.
