Re: Cattail Pond
Kestrelpaw acknowledged Gingerfrost's words and gesture, careful to stay in his sight. Hopefully she'd be able to get some good hunting...
With Gingerfrost near the lake, she began to stalk one of the water fowl that had pulled itself up from the water. The thing was ways away from the rest of the group which made Kestrelpaw's eyes narrow. Perfect. She stayed low, using the cattails to cover her scent and her body, pulling herself forward one small step at the time. It was closer, and closer, and closer, when... Pounce! Kestrelpaw managed to catch the thing off guard with a quick nab at its neck; the loon didn't even have a moment to cry out. The bird hung limp in her jaws, and she gave a triumphant grin around the feathers. [ @Estelle ] |

Re: Cattail Pond
Kestrelpaw waited for Gingerfrost to finish his hunting, watching with a careful eye. She hadn't had much help with her hunting lesson yes, maybe she oimught to ask Nightspark... or maybe she should ask someone else. Not that she didn't like Nightspark- she just felt like she should have more than one teacher. For educational purposes. "Kay." She said, watching as Gibgerfrost finished the fish off with a quick bite. A little different from hunting mice and birds, but close enough. Then, the grey apprentice walked after the deputy, satisfied with the outcome. |

Paws silently steered him in the direction of Cattail Pond, the very destination where an apprentice had died under his watch only a moon ago. Ferretsnap approached the pond, staring at it. The very location Glisteningpaw had slipped and fallen. The location where they had died. He sucked in a deep breath, closing his eyes and sitting down. Such a death should have never happened. It didn't matter if he couldn't have controlled it- he should have been more careful. They were young and didn't even know how to hunt. Obviously they didn't know to be careful around the edge- and now they were dead. |

Re: Cattail Pond
~ Cherrykit ~
she-cat 1 moon old The young kit padded through the tall grasses, Cattail Pond temptingly visible just a few steps away. She had been tempted to go there by the large amount of apprentices she saw going there every morning to learn to hunt and swim. She knew she was far from becoming an apprentice, but the thought of her swimming with long, strong strides through the clear, rippling water, with a fat fish in her jaws, was simply too good to pass up. She had had to sneak out of camp behind an apprentice and warrior duo, Mistfall and Eveningpaw, to act casual and avoid being caught by a queen, but she had managed. She bounded through the grass toward the pond, the wind rushing through her calico coat. She was so caught up in the moment, she hadn't even noticed Mistfall and Eveningpaw standing near the pond's edge! Mistfall was instructing Eveningpaw on how to properly hunt for fish, unaware of a shocking surprise that was about to pass them. Before either of the two cats could react, Cherrykit came careening across the grass, slamming into Eveningpaw! The young molly gasped in surprise as the wind was knocked out of her, and looked around frantically, as she hadn't come to the realization that it was a misbehaving kit that had slammed into her. Mistfall gasped in shock as well, and watched in horror as Cherrykit helplessly lost her balance, stumbled, and went careening off the pond's edge with a splash. Cherrykit then began frantically clawing at the deep water, her head and body soaked through, and screeching for help, her helpless meowing drowned out by her dipping under and above the water every few seconds, struggling for air. The water was deep and murky, and the young kit tried everything she could to keep herself above water, despite not knowing how to swim. Her mind raced, wondering if someone would possibly save her. |

Redsea was lost in thought beyond everything that was happening and missed the apprentice's question. Once it hit him, the other responded for him and his ears twitched as he cleared his throat. "Forgive me, I was just thinking-" He cut himself off with an airy laugh before moving away in embarrassment, leaning over before making his way over to where Pebblesplash stood. But still, his eyes remained rather distant.

A large, black kittypet tom was sat on the other side of the pond, staring at his reflection. "Hm... It appears I have gained another scar. I should make note of this." He purred quietly and after remembering it he padded off. His scent lingered, however.

Redsea had caught two fish and was in the process of catching his third. He had found a good spot that seemed to be filled with decently-sized fish and he turned to Pebblesplash once he arose from the water. "You seem a little eager." There was a cool tone in his voice that suggested he was in between snapping at her or taking nothing from her words. He glanced over the apprentice before hears ears twitched. "How will we carry all this back?..."

Re: Cattail Pond
Mothwhisper nodded at Sunsetpaw, giving Nightfall a meek smile back. Everyone was accounted for, yes. It was time to depart. The warrior rather liked Cattail Pond, so they eagerly took the lead. Hopefully, the others followed closely. They didn't want to have to wait up, their impatience getting the better of them.
Their pace slowed, however, when they actually reached the pond. They wanted to be careful not to scare any potential prey off, especially any waterfowl. Bright eyes studied the area before they turned to the others. "Sunsetpaw, can you hunt?" they asked, realizing suddenly that the apprentice could be lacking that knowledge. Mothwhisper looked to Nightfall, hoping that their eyes conveyed that the other warrior could either hunt or help out, too. @Bean. @Pangoligon gonna just transition this unsmoothly here ehehe |

Re: Cattail Pond
[i do think it's been a bit since bean replied so i'm just gonna go ahead (: @Pangoligon ]
Mothwhisper wasn't surprised, mentors could be busy, and not all lessons could be taught right away. They nodded at Sunsetpaw, wondering how they should go about showing the young cat how to hunt. Looking around, their gaze settled on the pond, deciding that it was their best option. Mothwhisper flicked her tail, beckoning Sunsetpaw to follow. "Watch," they instructed kindly, pausing by the pond's edge. "Have no shadow over water," they added, glancing at the apprentice carefully. It was both a gentle warning and a lesson: a cat's catch could be frightened off if a shadow was cast over the pond's surface, and the fish would swim away. With a keen eye, the warrior observed the pond. A silhouette of a fish could be seen, and their whiskers twitched with delighted anticipation. This had to be a perch because it wasn't as slim as the chubs that dwelled below the surface. Mothwhisper carefully leaned forward, tense as they reached with a tentative clawed paw. The perch moved, mouthing at the surface - Lightning reflexes allowed Mothwhisper to hook their claws around the scaled prey, mrrowing proudly as they tossed the fish onto land. The thing flopped around a bit, but Mothwhisper quickly made a move to deliver a killing bite. They shook their wet paws dry, turning to observe Sunsetpaw. "See?" they asked, head tilted with curiosity. Did the little cat have any questions? Did they understand how to hunt now? |

Re: Cattail Pond
Mothwhisper smiled softly, though their humility made them want to brush off the apprentice's small compliment. They watched Sunsetpaw's focused poised, finding a small warmth of pride growing for them. Despite the cat's young age, they were doing well. Their natural talent was impressive, and though Mothwisper hid it, they were surprised that the cat had caught something.
The catch was a bit messy, there definitely was some polishing to be done on the 'paws technique. The warrior padded closer over to Sunsetpaw, dipping their head slowly in approval. "Your mentor will help more," they stated, smiling a brighter smile so that Sunsetpaw could know that Mothwhisper was thoroughly impressed. At the apprentice's question, they looked at the fish, taking in the small size. "Chub," they informed after a moment more of studying. So together, they had a perch and a chub. Mothwhisper tilted their head at the pond, hesitating. They could try to catch another thing...but they should be grateful for what they already had. It wouldn't do to exhaust the pond's prey, and time was burning away. "Head back?" Mothwhisper addressed the question to Sunsetpaw, because even if they didn't want to try again, perhaps the apprentice did, and who were they to deny the young cat the chance? @Pangoligon |

Re: Cattail Pond
Mothwhisper waited patiently as Sunsetpaw considered their opinion, keeping their features neutral so as to not influence the littler cat in any way. They wanted to make sure that whatever they chose, they chose what they wanted. It seemed that returning was the final decision, and so the warrior nodded.
Before picking up their perch, Mothwhisper looked around the pond. Funny, Nightfall had been with them when Gingerfrost had called them forth, but now the other warrior was nowhere to be seen. Their eyebrows came together in concern, but they did their best to figuratively shrug it off. It wouldn't do to expect the worst, so they'd just bring it up to Gingerfrost and let it be. "Somewhere," they answered vaguely to Sunsetpaw's question, not wanting to tell a white lie but also not wanting to worry the 'paw. It probably wasn't anything worrisome, anyway. "Let's go," they murmured, picking up their perch finally and heading back toward RiverClan camp. Mothwhisper hoped that Sunsetpaw had enjoyed this patrol. They certainly did, having gotten to interact with the apprentice was nice. The little was a good hunter, and they were delightful with their enthusiasm. @Pangoligon don't forget to make a post in the prey pile! :heartbounce: |

Just remembering it made her shudder... the feeling of the camp walls coming crashing down, the water rushing all around her... she never wanted to experience anything like that again. But she could hear birds around, so hopefully the prey had returned since then. Ideally, they'd stick to fish and small rodents like mice. Larkwing had no idea if the apprentice with her had any hunting experience, let alone enough to catch the few birds she could hear (finch or sparrows maybe), so those should probably be left alone. Actually, if she wanted to know the young cat's experience she should probably just ask. "Has your mentor taken you out hunting yet?" She asked Briarpaw, keeping her voice low and scenting the air while she waited for an answer. Hm... there was water vole around here. |
Re: Cattail Pond
Apprentices under the age of six moons, as well as those lacking battle training, should not be present. Those that are will face appropriate consequences from Bumblestar. |

Fawnpaw stalked along the grass, excited she finally got some action in her new clan. Her fur brushed along the cattas, leaving her scent. |
Re: Cattail Pond
Sunleap marked the cattails. He wondered if this was a good iea. Weren't they stealing? And wouldn't stealing some of RiverClan's territory make RiverClan mad at them? Wasn't ShadowClan being mad at them more then enough?

Despite not actually knowing that their clan was going to be taking Cattail Pond, he took the impromptu land grab in stride. Although, Alderstep had had a hunch, forming the second Bumblestar merely mentioned territory at the beginning of the meeting. Well, whatever. He was absolutely awed by the sight of the pond. His hope to steal this bit of territory for themselves was sincere. The tabby took to marking an area off to the side, eyes sharp for any fishcats should they appear.

She wouldn't be long, and RiverClan really needed the food... The tortie she-cat turned back to look at Briarpaw, about to ask the apprentice to stay where she was for just a moment while she went and caught something, but the second she opened her mouth to speak, before the words had even formed in her throat, she smelled it. ThunderClan. Clear as day and fresh as the waters of the pond this area was named for. Fur standing on end and immediately alert, Larkwing stepped in front of the apprentice, shielding her body like it was her life's sole mission. Why was ThunderClan here? Was this an attack? Had RiverClan done anything recently to warrant such a thing? Was ThunderClan even starved for territory recently??? Whatever it didn't matter. The scent was fresh and it was only going to continue to get fresher. "Briarpaw, we need to get back to Rugged Range, NOW." It wasn't a suggestion, it was an order. "You are to stay by my side at all times, no matter what, until we're back, is that clear?" She hated having to be strict with other cats, but now was not the time to joke around, they seemed to have very little time for stuff like that lately. Whole body tense, she waited for the apprentice's answer. <><><><><> @jupiter |
