Dawnglare was gone, that was straight forward enough. One day you are running through puddles working on foot work and the next he’s gone just like a dead leaf in a windstorm. Was it slightly frustrating? Perhaps. But it gave way to greater opportunity, not that Dawnglare was remotely bad at being a mentor but there was a chance he could snag an enforcer as a mentor. They were idolized and probably rightly so. He’d only really started to get a feel for shadowclan just as he began his apprenticeship, so he was just catching up. He didn’t know enough of the enforcers to gauge how ready they were for apprentices, except that Mirehound already had one. Cedarpaw if he could remember correctly. That left around five or six different mentor possibilities… if he had his numbers right.

He gently tapped the pads of his paws against the ground in thought. He’d have to approach one of them at some point just to bring up the point he was mentorless and was distressed at the idea he could miss out on a possible raid if training wasn’t picked back up soon. That’s however when another thought clicked in his head just as his eyes passed the shadow ledge. Why not go directly to the source?

Was it a little ambitious? Perhaps. But there was nothing wrong about being forthrightly ambitious in his training goals. (At least not that he could identify at that moment) Would he have rather gone through a deputy? Perhaps an enforcer to get some networking and build reprieve? Of course. However Singepaw liked to figure that Dawnstar was reasonable. In fact a little self righteously he would’ve assumed that this was the exact behaviour she would have appreciated. Jumping through the hurdles could have been risky depending on Dawnstars mood and whatever time of day he caught her, if it was even possible to catch her attention since she just seemed so busy. Especially these days.

He tapped his paw pads against the ground a few more times. Technically it was her job to reassign mentors, though why would you stop there? He could emphasize the fear of missing a raid and perhaps ask her for direct training tips. Again far more ambitious than his already quite straight forward idea, but worth a shot. Pros? Potential one on one training with Dawnstar, gain some kind of notoriety (for the bare minimum) of requesting a new mentor and taking his training into his “own paws”, be prepared for the raid. Cons? He could miscalculate when approaching Dawnstar and catch her when she’s too busy, fail miserably at a training opportunity, get assigned a lack lustre mentor.

He tapped his paw pads one more time before nodding confidently. That’s it. It was decided he would approach Dawnstar whenever he saw her next. Sure there was cons, but there was also a potentially large payout for guts. He nodded again, primarily to reassure himself, before continuing his grooming session he had abandoned.

Which paw was that again? The colossal ShadowClan leader was sitting at the entrance of the camp, sort of guarding but mostly just watching the forest. The commotion in camp had seemingly died down quite a bit, which meant she wasn't needed every second of the day. It gave her a little more freedom to do as she pleased. Normally she'd wander the territory with the extra freedom, either looking for a fight or working on tree climbing, but today she didn't feel the usual restless pull to leave. She could sleep, but she already took a nap this morning, and being overly lazy wasn't her thing.

Her den had felt too stuffy and the clearing itself too loud, so she had climbed up the rocky slope and settled on watching the dark forest from the edge of camp. She had walked along the edge of the gorge, scenting for any nearby foxes or other predators, and after finding nothing she went to sit at the camp entrance, hidden by some bushes, until she noticed the flamed-hued tom in the clearing below. His pelt was quite a startling shade of orange that he was a bit hard to ignore. The first thought that came to mind was how bad he'd be at hiding in the shadows. Even in the dark, he'd stand out.

The paw tapping was the next thing that caught her attention, it reminded her of a rabbit. They'd thump their paws on the ground for reasons she wasn't entirely certain of. It was not a habit she saw many apprentices do let alone ShadowClan cats. His copper-shaded irises seemed unfocused, clearly, he was lost in thought about something. Singepaw Her mind proved the apprentice's name a few moments later. She faintly recalled that he was one of the paws that would be needing a new mentor. She's failed to see Dawnglare within ShadowClan for quite some time.

Half intrigued and amused, she watched him do that paw-thumping action again, and nod to himself. Another peculiar apprentice. Dawnstar almost wished some of these younger brats had been a part of her generation, cats like Mirehound, Cougarivy, Larkfire, and so on would have been good company during her apprenticehood. It would have been nice to have an actual rival to bond and contend with. She wasn't sure where Singepaw stood, the paw just looked vaguely intriguing thinking to himself.

Turning her back to the pine forest, she confidently climbed down the cliff slope and padded through the clearing on quiet paws, coming up behind Singepaw. "What in the world is going on in that head of yours?" Dawnstar quired in a light tone. She veered around the paw, bringing her towering height to his front. The inquisitive glint in her amber glare never faded as she inspected the apprentice as if hoping to find a new mouse to entertain herself with.

What now? He’d done all the conclusive thinking he needed to do, there was nothing left in his agenda. Yet for some reason it just didn’t feel good? After his humiliating practice interruption from the previous day with Mushroomkit he wasn’t entirely sure he wanted to go practice anymore hunting crouches, there was something mildly humiliating about having a kit all up in your business like that. Especially when you were trying to be serious. Autumnkit and Mushroomkit… how unlucky. Singepaws muzzle twitched as the memory replayed itself a few times. Autumnkit tackling him, Mushroomkit leaping right over him. No, it would do no use being frustrated over it. He, like them lacked lots of training, but on the flip side he had one thing did not. A drive to be good, maybe not the best, but better than most. Besides, all the fun and labouring work of becoming the best would be spent once you reached the top. Then what? Defend a title you have secured? Boring. There must’ve always been someone higher up, some other challenge to-

The sun was blocked and the unmistakable chill of having someone looming right over your shoulder overwhelmed him. The fiery apprentice sat upright at once, spinning to face whoever had come to interrupt his thinking. Expecting to turn and see eye to eye with a warrior he was mildly surprised to see Dawnstar. Well. Dawnstars shoulder. He cocked his head back to look up at the she cat, the necklace of scars just at his head height. He’d never been so close to the shadowclan leader and quite frankly it was just as he had expected. Menacing. One might think Singepaw would’ve been intimated, but there was something about seeing a cat at peak physical form. What he could only deduct Dawnstar was at. It was a motivation if nothing else.

He almost missed the question as he made his quick observations and had to snap back at attention as she finished off her inquiry. ”You actually.” there was a bit of an audacious tone to his voice but it seemed to fizzle out in his facial expression. If starclan was as influential as they claimed to be, this was quite literally a perfect scenario to monopolize on. ”I was deciding what I had to do about my mentor situation-“ he added with a slight tip of his head ”in fact just as you had shown up I had made the decision to catch you at your next availability” what a chunky sentence, he lifted the one paw and jammed it against his other regretfully. It was truly humbling to be in front of someone and stumble over your words the way he had, it felt like leaders demanded some kind of respect and courtesy when speaking but he just… wasn’t like that? Sure he could throw in a few fancy words. But he was straight forward, a matter of fact kind of guy. And honestly, trying to cloak it underneath this… whatever this was felt so awkward and unnatural.

There was just a faint glimmer of fear that Dawnstar wouldn’t appreciate it, but boldness ought to be respected didn’t it? That’s how anybody got anywhere, not kissing ass, being straight forward, different and noticeable. Or would she want a more subservient and obedient type? No. That couldn’t be it. He recalled the enforcers for a moment and finished the internal debate with a decision that boldness was the most authentic and eye catching way to go. His brown eyes met her deep amber ones and another wave of half confidence churned in his belly. ”Im afraid of getting a bad mentor, I’m afraid of missing out on a possible raid. Dawnglare disappearing couldn’t have come at a worse time for me.

his gaze shifted away for a moment, the cogs in his head churning for the next few words ”so I figured who better to ask than you. If anybody could ensure I’m capable of any raid activities it would be you. On top of the fact, you are the only one I could beg for a decent mentor. Though I’m confident I could make due with whatever I was given, but I would rather not risk it.” his voice seemed to regain some of the strength he’d felt and his eyes drifted back upwards to meet hers. “And maybe… if you had the time? Show me a few things.” He felt a sort of excitement in his paws anticipating her answer, awaiting the chance for her face to react before her words did and decode what she felt before she even spoke

Butterflybrook
She/Her

The days were getting quite boring. In fact, Butterflybrook was starting to wonder if the world could get any more boring. Specifically ShadowClan. Obviously, she had to assist this drab Clan by causing some trouble. Heterochromatic gaze aimlessly flitting around the clearing, the grey and cream feline caught sight of Mistyblink - and grinned. Ah, her new victim, perhaps. Flouncing over on light, elegant paws, Butterflybrook descended upon the warrior without warning. "Hello!" She trilled, expression bright and happy.

Mistyblink turned her blank gaze to the cheery female. "Hello there." she smiled lightly.

Settling beside Mistyblink without bothering to ask permission, the grey and cream female beamed. A moment later, she tipped her head to the side in question. "What are you doing?" Mistyblink was proving rather boring company, like most of ShadowClan. No worries, Butterflybrook would rile her up soon enough.
