@duskfire1
Her breath clouded the air as she listened to Ryepaw. He was a cat of few words, it seemed. Always saying less than he thought. Falconfeather nodded as she listened confirming the fact of bloodshed as a truth.. She hoped that the silence of the remainder of their walk had cleared her earlier outbreak of emotions from his mind. It was unlike her, and frankly, it was embarrassing to be seen as an overly emotional cat in a clan full of cold-hearted killers. "That's true. I guess we'll start with a basic evaluation. She was aware the tom had said he knew nothing, but there was always the case where he could have picked something up while watching others spar.

She positioned herself away from the edge of the cliffs, farther away from him. "Now, attack me. Claws sheathed, of course." Falconfeather wished she didn't have to add the second part. Had this been any other clan, she doubted she would have to say it. But this was Shadowclan. And, looking over at one of the other mentor-apprentices pairs sparring beside them, she swallowed hard at the glint of claws reflected from the younger cats paws. It was something she hated, but it saddened her as well. That someone so young would know how it felt to sink their claws into cat flesh before their first battle. It made them stronger, yes. Most cats didn't appear to feel any regret during battle, they didn't look guilty when a claw went towards someones eye, but it wasn't right.

It didn't sit right with her that a 8 moon old Shadowclan apprentice was more deadly than a new warrior, if neither had seen battle. It was like the code had never existed. Falconfeather's amber orbs faded out of focus as she stared at the ground, her thoughts a torrent of fears and hatreds. A gust of leaf-bare wind brushed against her cheek, and she shivered. Although it was a small gesture, it reawakened her senses, and her gaze refocused on Ryepaw, earlier worries forgotten, replaced with new ones. She didn't want to bring up the warrior code, but this young cats reactions to some of her earlier statements made her worry about having to do it.

But back to the thing that was literally at hand(paw?). Falconfeather was looking for one of three things. 1: Ryepaw would come at her, all attack, no defensive maneuvers, without a thought, though she doubted that would happen. He looked too focused for it. 2: He would take his time, eyeing her, scanning for weaknesses before cautiously advancing. This seemed like a possibility, and would be easier for her to coach than the first way. The brown tabby preferred quiet strategy. 3:The third seemed perhaps the most likely. Ryepaw would have evaluated her strengths and weaknesses already and attack after a few seconds. He would then, less recklessly than the first option, but more assertively than the second, attack.

Whatever it was. This was her first time battle training, and she was prepared for every opportunity.

He nodded. “It’d be harder to flip a bigger cat right now, but within a few moons I think you’ll be able to do it. Maybe sometime soon we can train with another mentor and apprentice and you can show me how Sunsnarl taught you to flip others. Until then, would you like to continue battle training and hone your skills in that? Claws sheathed this time, though—we don’t want Dawnstar asking why I’ve come back from training covered in claw marks,” he said, chuckling lightly.

Snarlpaw nodded. "You're probably right, my dad is a large cat so I hope to be like him one day." The spikey black tom mewed. Though he barely looked like his father other than his cold eyes, he was a lot like the golden tom. "Yes, that'd be great." He mewed.

Re: ShadowClan Training Cliffs

Ryepaw

His ears were angled towards his mentor as she spoke. His attention wasn't on his mentor, at the moment, but his ears would take care of that for him as he gazed around, twitching his whiskers at the cold breeze that had settled in. His brain urged him to look at his mentor once again when she told him to attack her. His eyes narrowed, his tail stiff, and his claws sheathed. As much as he wanted to tear into something right now, his mentor was not that something. He noted that she seemed to be calculating many things, situations, problems, solutions, or maybe just things that were on her mind. Maybe her calculations would take her mind off him, but he didn't know if she was the kind of cat stuck in the future and/or past. Or maybe she was paying attention, but she was attempting to fool him. My StarClan so many possibilities!

He unsheathed his claws, giving them a quick flex before sliding them back in. Letting out a breath, he crouched down low, his tail lightly flicking, his paws moving slowly in front of him. He advanced, rather slowly, and eyed her posture. She was tense, but also ready to move if he tried anything heavy, like leaping on her and trying to drag her town. He was quick, but he wasn't sure how quick his mentor was, so that posed a possible complication in anything he tried that involved speed. He curled his lip, his teeth glinting in the pale sunlight. He needed surprise.

He suddenly dashed forward, curving around her to her side, a small distance away before leaping forward, planning to slam into her haunches, putting her off balance, giving him the opportunity to leap onto her side and push her down. His launch should provide enough weight for him to bring her down. If she leaped forward, he would do the same, in an attempt to grapple onto her haunches and drag her down that way, then do the same that he would have done before, and push her down from her side. If she leaped back, he would probably hit her face instead of her haunches, then turn around to hit her side, planning to push her side to bring her down. If any, he planned to bring her down by her side with his weight, because if he was being honest with himself, he was lean (not skinny, he denies that harshly), but he can make hell-a weight for anyone who opposed him, whether that was verbally, mentally, or physically.

This all of course, depended if he was able to use his intellect correctly and correlate her possible speed and moves, and if her strength was too much for him, that was his problem. Everything has its limits, sometimes you just need to do as much as you can and let the world deal with the rest. At least, that's what he thought.

Re: ShadowClan Training Cliffs

He had kept his trot the whole way to the training cliffs, hoping that Juniperpaw followed in tow. To be quite honestly if she hadn’t he wouldn’t be too pleased with the apprentice seeing as he was only coming up this way for her training. She had called his decision to begin with battle training a interesting choice, and honestly he could see why, but a apprentice wasn’t allowed to leave camp without a warrior anyway, so why teach hunting first when she couldn’t even put it to use whenever she pleases? Frowning softly, Splotchleaf ended up perched a little too close to the cliffs edge for his own comfort, and as a result peered down before scooting away. Every time he was stuck in a high spot his stomach churned, not to mention the possibility of there being bugs somehow along that fall. A little shiver ran through the warrior as he stuck his tongue out slightly. Once Juniperpaw had come into his view, Splotchleaf had rounded on the apprentice and gave her a once over, examining her and debating about whether she could be better at offense or defense. She was cocky, which could get her killed in either position. We’ll have to try and work on that with this thought, Splotchleaf paced around the molly before pausing and taking in a light breath, drifting towards the front where he was in her view and crouching down in a defensive position. “Try your best to copy this and then I’ll come over and see how stable you are,” and give you a few pointers deciding not to voice this part as he didn’t exactly want to face any tantrum it could cause, Splotchleaf blinked curiously at Juniperpaw. “You haven’t gotten any training yet, correct?”

Falconfeather wasn't quite sure if her apprentice was paying attention. He seemed to be looking everywhere but at her, though his ears stayed pointed her direction. It could mean that he was pretending to not focus so she would lower her guard, or he could actually not be paying attention, in which case she wasn't sure what to do. Falconfeather was moments away from saying something to test that when he turned back to her. Good. She caught the glint of a claw and swallowed hard. It wasn't so much of a fear of bloodshed, or anything as petty. Instead, it was the constant fear that Ryepaw would decide she was a faulty mentor and decided to ignore her orders. But he didn't seem like someone who would do that. He wasn't as totally screwed as everyone else seemed to be, at least, not on the surface. You could never tell with the more intelligent ones.

And Ryepaw seemed like one of the more intelligent ones. Falconfeather could almost hear the gears turning in Ryepaw's mind as she watched him contemplate his plan of attack. She had devised her ideas earlier, and watching him think, she knew that her first idea was definitely wrong, it had been too long for that to be his plan. She followed his eyes. They usually gave off the instructions of where he was going to attack. That was how it usually worked in battle. As much as the enemy wanted you to think they were going one way, their eyes always gave it away. But she had learned that most older warriors knew that as well, their eyes looked over the position for a split second before moving on. That was what she hoped to be able to do evaluate the weakest place and make it seem like she hadn't noticed it. It worked for her, like, seventy percent of the time. And then the other times, she was overly predictable. Everyone had a tell, the question was, how long did it take someone to find.

Falconfeather jumped as Ryepaw sprang forward. Despite it being completely expected, with his pacing forward and everything, it still was the opposite. But hey, she was fast too. She was good at running as well. She twisted away as he curved to the side, turning to face him. As the apprentice raced to the side, backing away from her side, she noticed he moved back, instead of progressing straight to the heart of the matter, her side. She wasn't fast enough to move out of the way of his flying paws, but having partially maneuvered out of the way, she was able to stay standing. "Nice hit," she breathed as his paws connected to her side. Hissing in a breath, she twisted out of the way before he could do the next part of his plan. Obviously, he had one. He had been standing still for too long for it to just be a flurry of claws. One of the cats nearby seemed to have consented to that strategy. Falconfeather waited for him to strike again. This was his time to shine, and defense was always based off of offense. Or something like that. Was it the opposite?

Re: ShadowClan Training Cliffs

Ryepaw

He gave a grunt of satisfaction as he heard his mentor's praise, backing away with his head lowered and looking up at her. I can't do this. She wants me to attack again. He thought, panting as he grappled with the possibilities of his mentors strength. He always told himself that he couldn't do something, and it normally helped him actually do it. Discouraging himself makes him fight back, way harder than swooning himself on like a baby bird, he wasn't weak. He didn't need to be babied, he'll kill anyone who tries it.

Bringing her down from the bottom wouldn't help, she's too fast for him to reach her legs and buckle her down, and she's to strong if he tried claw-less blows. He was stuck, but surely he could get out. If he waited too long, he'd be dead in battle, so he'd better come up with a strategy quick before he fails. She could leap away if he came from above, but he might succeed with a tail yank, but that itself was also too risky. If he hurt her in training would he get in trouble? Time is almost up! Just a few more seconds and your enemy would have your neck by now. His mind hissed as he formed his strategy. He leaped forward, fixing his eyes on her face. He thought if she tried to back away, he'd reach out his paw to push one of her moving front paws off balance, giving him the chance to worm under that vulnerable spot for a split second and push up with all his strength, either knocking her off balance, or giving her a tilted posture and needed recovery time. He would use that time to his advantage and push one of her back legs out of center, which should manipulate her weight and bring her down.

If she didn't try to move out of the way, he would press his body to the ground and push up, likely hitting under her chin, making her look up while he used his side to push at her shoulder, hopefully bringing her down as well. As much as he thought he was clever, he knew that cleverness didn't always beat brute strength. It could, but he knew he didn't have the brains yet to reach that level. He just hoped his plan worked, because if he wanted to protect his clan and get his revenge on others, he would need to sharpen his skills.

Juniperpaw wasn't excited for training. Or was she? It was something that was a rolling ball through her head, one side facing up, making sense, before the other side tumbled up, replacing it. The main offender was the idea of the dust. Dust was always a problem when it came to battle training. The thought had stayed out of her mind, but now that the initial excitement had faded, it was back. She had to look meticulous. Otherwise, when she was finally called out for doing something right, which, so far, hadn't happened, but when it did, and it would, she would look so wonderful that everyone would look at her in awe. Maybe she'd finally get friends! But that wasn't the point. The point, was that if she did battle training, she would get dirty and then wouldn't be the best. On the other side of the argument (mind-argument?), there was the fact that it meant she wouldn't get beaten up by another cat next time she joined an event. And that would be a shock. It would also show Dawnstar that it was fine to worry about her pelt when she could fight anyways. "Who needs their beauty sleep." The muttered words escaped her lips before she could stop them. Of course she needed her beauty sleep! As much as she tried to convince herself otherwise, even around Splotchleaf, who made her feel like a mushroom, annoying and parasitic, she was still Juniperpaw. Still as vain as could be. But her stampede of thoughts about her glorious fur came to a halt as they arrived in the training cliffs. What is this place? She had never been there before, never seen anything like it. But it was fascinating, and that wasn't something she thought often. As Splotchleaf backed away, she paced forward, staring over the edge into the pit below. Woah. It was getting better every second. She turned to Splotchleaf as he began to speak. Copying? It was different than she thought it would be. Juniperpaw had been expecting to have to do some sort of evaluation first, but this was better! She grinned. Maybe she had seemed so smart that he decided to skip over it. She looked back up at him as she realized her mentor had gotten into a position for her to copy. Shoot. Falling into a similar stance, she nodded in agreement as he spoke. "Yep. First lesson. My old mentor never even spoke to me."

Ryepaw seemed to be doing well. Or as well as an untrained apprentice could do. The initial hit had surprised Falconfeather, but that element was gone now. She knew to keep watch on leaving openings, no matter how swift they were. But she also knew what to look out for in him. The list of improvements in her head were swelling, along with the praise. Her mind kept going back to the thought of that first, quick hit. It was good, really. It was the perfect thing to work off of. Featherfalcon, focus. It was what Pippa had called her all those moons ago, and however ridiculous it was, it pushed her to focus. Amber eyes surveyed Ryepaw as he seemed to grapple with something to do next. That wasn't good. One should always keep moving, no matter how worried they were about doing something right, though, she wasn't sure if that was his problem.

"Keep moving. I'd be at your throat by now-" She cut off as he leapt at her. The scenario had happened to her before, when sparring with another warrior. At that time, she hadn't had a clue as to what to do then, but afterwards he had explained the correct tactic. When she had moved backwards, the other warrior had slipped a paw under hers and she had literally fallen head over heels. It had hurt, and definitely wasn't something she wanted to experience again. Especially not with her new apprentice. She knew the feeling immediately. It was pride. Strong, furious pride. She wasn't going to let a young cat, one with barely any training, beat her. Featherfalcon, you idiot, even if he trips you, you can roll back up. Before the thought had even left her head, she had charged forward, meeting him halfway.

From her last try, she knew that the all other sides wouldn't work, and unless she rolled on her back, which she wasn't willing to do, this was the only sensible option. Instead of rising up to hit his chest with her own, the tabby lowered herself to the ground, attempting to slip underneath him. If she had judged the distance correctly, he would fly over her head and she would slam upwards, throwing him on her back and move to the side. She wasn't quite sure if it would work with a cat his size. Usually, it was someone much bigger, whose sternum was larger and easier to hit. In doing so, it usually took the breath out of them. Of course, with Ryepaw, if she managed to do it correctly, she would surge up more gently, taking care not to injure him. She wouldn't want to do it on their first lesson. If she managed that, as soon as the younger tom stood back up, she would rush him, swiping out a paw in order to attempt to trip him while he was regaining his balance. His offensive test was over. It was time for some defense.

He could understand the young tom looking up to his father. Loonfeather had done the same with his adoptive father, wanting to grow up to be a great warrior. Hopefully Snarlpaw would get his wish and be like his dad—though perhaps he could learn to be a tad bit nicer. Pushing the thought aside, Loonfeather rolled his shoulders and said, “Alright, let’s see how you do when it’s another cat coming at you.”

The tom darted out head first at Snarlpaw, but at the last second changed directions to get beside him and lashed out a sheathed paw at his legs. He wanted to see how quickly the apprentice could recover from being tricked or if he had noticed the shift in his stance.

(I feel you, I’m so bad at RPing mean characters lol. Practice makes perfect though?)

Re: ShadowClan Training Cliffs

Ryepaw

He furrowed his brow in surprise and gave an angered snarl as his mentor was able to retaliate quicker than he thought, as he leaped over her, his original plan was to try to knock her aside, but she had lowered before he could do just that, and he was in mid-air, just above his mentor's back. Everything slowed when she jerked up, not too fast he could tell, which was something he could use to his advantage. He used his tail to quickly flip over, after all, cats always land on their paws, as he curled into a ball mid-air, so at least when she jerked up, she would feel awkward as his weight was all focused into one position, which would either foil her plans to jerk up properly, making her fall, or just plain foil her plans, while his weight fell on her while she tried to jerk up, which he would easily uncurl and latch onto her before she could try anything. He had a weird feeling on the inside, his body curled up as darkness enveloped him, his eyes squeezed shut, giving him a... safe, feeling. It reminded him of the nursery. The nursery... His mind cooed, as he blared open his eyes with a hiss at it. I am not weak! Not weak, not weak! I'll kill anyone who thinks it! Even you brain! Even if it kills me too, I'll kill you for calling me weak! He thought fiercely, schooling his mind to focus back in on the battle session.
