Normally, the gray tabby was put off by the idea of spending his day training an apprentice that wasn't even his. He'd made that mistake with Jaggedpaw, and it had been one of the most boring swimming lessons ever. So why he had agreed to take Nightpaw out for some training was beyond him. Perhaps the severity of the situation RiverClan was in - and the fact that he wanted to get his discovery of Sootstar out of hid mind - helped propel the situation. Whatever the case was, he was already making his way to the training island with the young cat following behind.

"Alright," he growled as they reached their destination, turning to face Nightpaw. "What kind of training have you had so far?" Kestrelwing wasn't even sure who her mentor was - not that he cared, as they probably weren't even doing their job if she was coming to another warrior for training. And he didn't really care to know either. As much as he despised it, he'd rather apprentices learned his style of fighting so that they were prepared for any surprises that might come there way, be it from ShadowClan or the outskirts.

Now that came as a surprise. This cat had beaten Petuniapaw? The older apprentice had struck him as rather nice, but could handle her own in a battle. So the fact that she had lost to this youngster... well, he was a bit disappointed. "You know most battle moves, huh?" he questioned, a sense of doubt trickling into his words. "Alright. In that case, why don't you show me by trying to attack me." The gray tabby slipped into a defensive crouch, readying himself for Nightpaw's attack.

He watched each movement carefully, tracking Nightpaw's steps until his eyes noticed that she was trying to trick him and actually going for his side. He let the blow land, though used the momentum to side step a follow up attack and curled around to aim a fore paw at Nightpaw's exposed back.

The gray tabby was impressed at the speed this apprentice had, being able to dodge his attack like that. But there wasn't a moment to dwell on it as he felt her leap onto his back. He felt her claws dig in and instantly felt a switch flip. Quick as lighting, he rolled over in an attempt to squish the apprentice underneath him before leaping away to create some distance.

"Keep your claws sheathed," Kestrelwing growled, watching her through narrowed eyes. "It's fine with me, but you never want to fight with your claws unsheathed. The goal is to injure your enemies, not your own Clan."

The gray tabby just gave a gruff nod before getting right back into the mind of battle. He watched as she attempted to go for his underbelly. Not today, apprentice, he thought with a sly grin as he side-stepped the attack, lashing a sheathed paw out in an attempt to trip her hind legs and send her tumbling.

Sneaky little... The tom was a bit irritated with his blows not landing. Was he out of shape. He let out a small snarl as she got his neck in her paws. This was a dangerous spot to be in, so he utilized his hind legs to kick outwards towards her belly, hoping to land this and send her flying off of him.

That was more like it. He made a mental note to challenge Heronflight to a spar later to brush up on his skills. He couldn't have an apprentice getting the upper paw like this. Yellow eyes tracking her movements, Kestrelpaw focused his attention on her, muscles braced and ready for whatever oncoming attack she tried.

Yellow eyes followed her as Nightpaw landed, dashing for his side. A predictable move, as Kestrelwing knew she wouldn't try to go for his back again. He let his gaze follow her and nothing else, trying to make her believe that his side would be exposed for the attack. At the last moment, he spun on his heals and reared back, aiming a paw to the top of her head. If it landed, it would definitely stun her, albeit not by a lot. Just enough to throw her off.

As his paw collided with hers in the air, Kestrelwing felt a somewhat dull pain shoot from paw tips up the length of his forepaw and ending at his shoulders. He frowned and yanked his paw away, quickly scooting out of reach of another attack.

"That was... tolerable, as an apprentice." He wouldn't necessarily compliment her outright, as there was still much for her to learn, but it seemed she was on the right track. They had been at it for quite some time, and the sun was starting to fall from its place in the sky. "That should be enough for the day." While he was pleasantly surprised that this had turned into a better session than his last outing with Jaggedpaw, Kestrelwing wasn't about to spend all his free time with an apprentice. He still had to speak to Lionstorm.

He gave a flick of his tail to Nightpaw, signaling that they were done for the day and turning to head back to camp.

He should've known that once the fighting stopped that Nightpaw would bombard him with questions. Kestrelwing heaved a sigh, but didn't stop his trek as he replied to Nightpaw. "It was alright. You still have much to learn, despite knowing a few moves. Some of them were sloppy, and need fixing." he stated in a rather deadpanned tone, casting her a sideways glance.

Sootstar must've really hated him to stick him with two apprentices right before he left. He wanted to rub a paw across his face in frustration, but instead just brought his gaze forward, picking up the pace a bit. "We can try again tomorrow," he sighed, deciding to just give in. He knew the questions wouldn't stop if he stretched it out any longer.
