A velveteen nose quivered with a sneeze oncoming.

The thin girl — Sightlesskit, they called her — was huddled up in the corner of the nursery, tail-tip entwined across her muzzle. The room was black, and only that. Nothing more, and it would likely remain this way for the remainder of her life.

She feels helpless — body all nerve and internal disaster. Shaken. To make things miserably worse, her vision — such a precious gift she could have had — had failed her since birth. Replacing the two areas where her eyes might have been were instead, orbless wrinkles; as though things had been sewn shut.

And with his response said, she urged the other paw away from her face. How was she supposed to respond? She wasn’t looking to possibly hurt the other kit’s feelings, really, but it would be hard to speak a mere facade. Who was she to trust anymore?

Suppose she might as well play it the fake way, at this point. The muscles in her forequarters — visible only because of how skinny she was — twitch, in what was just a whisker’s length away from being a flinch. “I... Everyone says that, and then they... Hurt. Me.” A brisk image of her mother tearing away at her fur, at her flesh, hurried through her mind — Sightless tensed.

“I’m sorry. I know you mean it and I... Uhm, yeah. But... How are you?”
