Re: Willow's Rise

Mallowswarm

Moss in jaws, Mallowswarm moved through Willow's Rise. The cemetery was still shrouded in silence, silence that felt heavier and more oppressive the longer she was there. She wished to hear birdsong, or the scurry of a small creature through the undergrowth, but the only sound that reached her ears was her patrolmates' pawsteps. Even they grew faint and disappeared as she moved further away from them. It left her feeling on edge.

Eventually she spotted cobwebs, glistening in the space between a branch and the trunk of a tree. Mallowswarm hesitated, realising that she didn't know how to collect them. These weren't like most herbs; she couldn't hold them in her maw. She'd have to find another way to carry them. Maybe she could make them stick to her pelt, or... she looked away from the cobwebs, thinking. Her gaze fell on a stick lying on the ground nearby and it came to her. Of course. She should have thought of it sooner.

Mallowswarm walked to where the stick was and picked it up, holding it in her jaws along with the moss. She removed the cobwebs with its other end, wrapping them around the stick as best as she could. There, that should do it.

Glancing over the patrol and cemetery once in a while to make sure that the uneasy feeling is staying a feeling, Fernwhisper found a good spot for moss on a tree.
(D20, rolled 20 - +2 moss)
Carefully collecting all the moss she could carry, Fernwhisper turned to see if the patrol is waiting on her, they should get back soon Hollowpaw will be waiting on them, and besides, the clouds don't seem any friendlier.
(Fernwhispers haul: 3 cobwebs, 2 moss)

"Al-alright," Firebloom chirped semi-cheerfully, attempting to make herself seem less awkward, but also not overly enthusiastic. "I-I'm sure the Clan needs ev-everyth-thing w-we can c-catch, so let's g..Get this done q-quickly and ef-eff-efficiently..."

The warrior slipped away briefly, soon returning with a sparrow hanging limp from her jaws.

Ah! There she was! Looks like there was nothing to worry about - whoops! "Whoops - err, sorry!" She scrambled away from Risingstorm, and followed the patrol out into territory. She would've liked to go a bit further out - but it was hard to complain after being cooped up in camp for so long. She'd been to Willows Rise before with Spiderlingpaw - that was moons ago by now. It'd been her first patrol, and, well - she'd actually been a little scared! Can you believe it? Her? Scared? Hahahaha. It seemed so silly now.

Today, she was the opposite as scared, strutting along as if she owned the place. She knew she was meant to be waiting for the warriors to teach her, but that was so boring. Plus, she wanted to put her new skills from Minkvenom to the test. "Hey Rosepaw!" She called the fellow apprentice over boastfully, "watch and learn." She bet she could impress the slightly younger apprentice with no problems - so! She began to stalk away with a grin. Not too far, of course, she didn't wanna get in trouble. Nothing was worth all that palaver. She was acting super confident, but as she scented the air, she began to realise that picking out scents was the main thing she'd struggled with in her lesson. Darn. She lifted her nose to the air, attempting to get a clear wiff of anything.

[Rolled: 3] Errrrrr... She grumbled. Once again, all she could detect was a peculiar mix of everything ever. Trees, leaves, flowers - some prey, but she absolutely no idea what or where. She'd blame New-Leaf. All these new flowers and things blooming. "That is erm, once we find something. I'm more of a pouncer than a finder! We all have our strengths!" She puffed out her chest, trying her darnedest to look big and cool in the face of failure.

Rosepaw followed the patrol out as they finally, finally, finally had both warriors and could actually set a paw out into the territory. She was about five seconds away from snapping and finding a competent warrior to take her and Hornetpaw out- who speaking of, seemed to be trying to show off to Rosepaw rather than focusing on the prey they were tasked to hunt, The russet tabby very nearly rolled her eyes but watched regardless.

Only for a lackluster display to unfold in front of her, oh. She giggled, unable to help herself though attempting to muffle it behind a dainty paw, "Yes, I suppose that's true. I've been practicing my hunting since Tigerpelt showed me the basics a couple moons ago, I'm happy to finally be able to use the knowledge." She stepped away from the other apprentice and made her way through the underbrush, staying nearby, but away enough to find anything unstartled.

Rosepaw's ears rotated as she crouched down, tail sweeping low, and there! The sound of something in the grass, a scent drifting to her snout being one she recognized from the prey pile but much more... alive. Rosepaw dashed forward, cutting through the brush for her stormy eyes to land on a mouse. Remember, form, but do not distract yourself with perfection. The apprentice disciplined herself as she started forward, and then suddenly pounced. Her paws barely hit the mark, rather hey happened to land on the mouse's tail. She killed it swiftly.

Her first catch! While Rosepaw attempted to find more prey because one for new leaf wasn't very good, anything else she managed to get scrambled away besides one especially slow vole that she practically dug back up from where it was trying to burrow. It was still two whole catches and meals so she was proud of herself. The performance just meant there was lots of room for improvement for her next time hunting.

Rosepaw returned to where she left Hornetpaw, if the apprentice happened to still be there, The russet tabby would show off the prey with a playful, though teasing look.

>Alright, Willow's rise! Here they were.

The tabby she-cat figured her other patrolmates were good, but she would remain in their sight view. Now, time to hunt.

[Roll: 11, 4, 8. Fail!]

Sweetswan had trouble finding prey at first, until she came across a mouse. Yes! She crouched down, slowly making her way over, being careful so she didn't spook the mouse. She paused once the mouse was a few tail-lengths away. She prepared to leap and-

landed right before the mouse. The rodent squealed before rushing away, giving the warrior no time to react and catch it. Dang it! The she-cat let out a growl of frustration, sweeping her tail against the forest floor. She would have to find something else.

[Roll: 4, 16, 11. Success! +1 vole]

Oh, there was a vole! Sweetswan's amber gaze fell on its pelt as she searched. This time she'd creep a bit closer to avoid her last mistake. Happened to the best of them after all. The tri-colored molly crept forward, waiting for the right moment to pounce.

When the vole turned its back to her, she leapt. She landed on it, giving it a quick killing bite to the neck, cutting off its squeal. She had managed to get one piece of prey, so that was good. She would have to bring back more than a measly vole however, to make up for her lateness.

Roll: 17, 19, 5. Success! +1 thrush]

The warrior buried her vole, amber gaze searching for anything else she could bring back as she wandered around the rise. Her ears picked up the fluttering of wings, and she turned her head to spot a thrush. Jackpot!

She crouched down low, making her way over inch by inch. It had been a while since she hunted a thrush, but she remembered how to hunt it. She placed her paws gently, trying not to make any sound that could alert the bird of her presence.

She had gotten real close to it, when it started preparing to fly away. She had to act fast. The warrior leapt out, claws hitting one of the bird's wings. It cawed and flapped wildly, but Sweetswan was too large. She opened her jaws, biting down hard on the neck to put an end to the struggle. The bird fell limp in her jaws. She dropped it, looking at the flurry of feathers around her. This would be a good piece of prey.

The warrior looked at the feathers that had fallen out during the hunt. Hm. Maybe she could gift one to Orangeflower! Her mate would like a feather, right? She hoped so. The she-cat grabbed a feather, sticking it in her fur for safekeeping.

She trotted back to where she had buried the vole, and dug it up. A thrush and a vole would be good, hopefully. She headed on back to her patrolmates, two pieces of prey held in her jaws and a feather weaved in her pelt. Sweetswan dropped her findings so she could speak. "Found a Thrush and a Vole, should be good if I say so myself," she purred kindly, her tail held high.

[Haul: 1 thrush, 1 vole, 1 feather]

Rosepaw seemed to be doing a decent job. Good to see. Firebloom's nicked ear twitched, her head slowly turning towards small movements on the ground. Mouse. Wasting no time, the scarred she-cat pounced at the rodent, swiftly catching it in her claws.

"If... If ever.-everyone's r-ready, I-I.. W-we can head back now, I-I...I suppose.." She murmured softly, before picking up her two catches and waiting for a response from the rest of the patrol.

Laughing?! Rosepaw was laughing at her?! Ugh! No way. She let out a small grumble, but didn't have any kind of good defence to give. And just like that, Rosepaw was away and hunting. Oh dear.. She tried to sniff the air again, attempting to piece things together. Uhhh... Maybe it was... Squirrel? Yes! She smelt a bit of squirrel in there, amongst other things. It was still a bit much to figure out. Amber eyes swooped across the area, till they finally caught onto a little bit of motion: in a nearby bush.

Could that be it? She crouched down, staring intently. Then, slowly but surely, it emerged - a squirrel! Now all she had to do was catch it. Couldn't be that hard, right? Rosepaw was making it look easy. [Rolled: 9] She began to creep toward it, each paw placed carefully to ensure it was making no noise - but, sure enough, its head turned to her anyway. And off it went. "Darn it!" She huffed, taking a moment to sit. She had to do this. She had to get at least one. She couldn't be bad at hunting, there was no way. The wind had been going toward the squirrel, away from her - could it be that? Was that part of this? Urgh. It was all far too confusing.

She began to walk about, hoping she'd finally find something, but all she was seeing was leaves, and grass, and flowers. No prey, no animals. She paused again, really trying to scent the air properly this time. Sniff sniff. [Rolled: 12!] Oh! Mouse! She could smell mouse! Her head swivelled, hoping she could figure out where it was coming from. It was... To her left, wasn't it? She began to stalk, following the aroma, and her eyes quickly fixated upon it. There it was, scuffling about at the base of a tree. She couldn't mess this one up. She didn't have many chances left, and soon everyone would be ready to leave. [rolled 15!] Carefully as possible, she began to edge forward. This time, she noticed that the wind was blowing toward her, and so far, the mouse hadn't noticed her. One pawstep, two pawsteps - still, it hadn't noticed. And she was right near it! She bunched her hind legs back, preparing, then took off in an explosive leap - and - yes! There it lay, right in her claws. Her first catch! She wished she could eat it, but she knew that wouldn't go down well. Whatever.

Might as well try for one more. After all, she'd clearly unlocked her true potential now. She sniffed the ground, just where the mouse had been. Perhaps there were more around? It was a strong smell, for sure, but she couldn't tell whether that meant multiple mice. She tried to follow the trail, losing it every now and again, having to circle back to where she last was - but eventually, she was there. Yep! Right behind, you guessed it, another mouse! Haha! So she was good at this (if you ignore all the pacing about and confusion and losing scent trails). Just as before, she stalked it carefully, lying in wait till it seemed like a good moment. [rolled: 8] Then, she sprung forward - but, missed her mark. It was gone in a blink. "Mmmrggghh, no fair." She grumbled. One, she supposed, would have to do for now. Hopefully Rosepaw hadn't got any more than that.

She picked her single catch back up, and returned to the group. Oh. Rosepaw had two. That didn't even make any sense! She seemed so... Ugh, she didn't even know! And - and - and - it even looked like she was showing off! She placed her one mouse on the ground, begrudgingly nudging it. "Nice catches." She had to force it out of herself. "This mouse was real hard to get, a fast one!" a big fat lie, but it made her feel better. Maybe she should get Rosepaw to teach her more about hunting. The idea was mortifying, but being bad at hunting sounded even worse. She was far too old to be bad at things now. Never mind that, actually - she'd just - she'd never been bad at anything. Ever! So why now?!

Everyone was here now. And ready to go. So, she scooped up the mouse in her jaws, and nodded at Firebloom's statement.
