Oriole's Perch (Closed)

Oriole looked out over her yard, her mottled tail flicking wildly as she sat perched on the side of her owner's fence. Her claws dug into the soft wood, being careful not to send the strong-scented shards flying beneath her paws. Her green eyes sparkled as she leapt down, her collar bell jangling as she did so. She clumsily hit the ground, but she didn't look fazed, and got up quickly. She shook out her fluffy fur, padding forward, wondering when her Twoleg would come home. She always lets me out when she's leaving, Oriole thought fondly, purring to herself. The calico molly rolled on the green grass, stretching as if she didn't have a care in the world. The scent of the garden flowers filled her nostrils, and she couldn't scent anything out of the ordinary. The kittypet purred, standing up and flicking her tail. She often got bored out here, and would end up frolicking with the flowers or chasing a beetle. She was quite young, only 8 moons, but was used to being alone. She had never known any parents or siblings, but she was friends with some of the nextdoor cats. Content, Oriole sat down and started lapping at the fur on her paw, and then continuing to drag it over her ear to give herself a neat appearance.

There was a rustle in the bushes beside the treeline before a small black head poked out, followed by a sleek body and a white-tipped tail. The cat looked around in concern, her green eyes dim with grief and alight with fear. Her whiskers twitched nervously as she padded towards the Twoleg nest on soft white paws, halting beside the fence and staring up at it with cautious curiosity. She glanced over her shoulder once before turning back to the fence and crouching, tensing her muscles and taking off with a leap that a SkyClan cat would be proud of. The dark she-cat landed gracefully atop the fence and turned to stare out at the forest. With a sigh, she leant down and straightened the single tuft of white fur on her chest. She twitched her tail once before looking to the Twoleg nest with a thoughtful frown. Could this be it? The she-cat was about to jump down into the fenced-off patch of grass when she noticed a calico down below her. A quick sniff revealed that it was a she-cat, and... ugh, a kittypet.

The molly sniffed the violets her owners had planted a season ago, their sickly sweet scent filling her nose. She opened her mouth slightly to scent them and drew in a deep breath, the flower hitting her right in her face. She jumped backwards, coughing and spitting at the sticky yellow substance dusted on her muzzle. She sneezed and wiped it off as much as she could, coughing and spluttering all the way. When she was sufficiently clean she huffed, her collar jingling and making a large racket. She heard something from behind her and jumped around, bristling, her soul filling with glee, thinking it was her TwoLeg. She almost began to purr, but when she saw the strange black molly, her voice died and she tilted her head. A new cat? Oriole thought, growing excited. Oh, how she loved meeting the new housecats. Giving a little energetic bounce on her paws, Oriole bounded forward, the young cat looking up at the molly with gleaming eyes. She skidded short of her and stopped.
"Hello!" Greeted Oriole, her tail curled over her back. At a closer inspection, she thought it was weird that the cat didn't seem to have a collar. Oriole often thought it was irresponsible when a TwoLeg didn't let their cat have a collar. What if they got lost? What if this cat was lost? "My name is Oriole," she introduced herself, although the strange cat was clearly older and larger than her. "What's your name?" She purred, hoping she was going to make a new friend. The more friends she had, the happier she was.

The she-cat watched the kittypet cautiously; domesticated cats were generally lazy and not too eager to fight, but she'd heard stories that some could give you a nasty scratch if you annoyed them. What annoyed kittypets, anyway? Not being fed? She shook her head to clear it, not wanting to forget why she was really here. You have a mission, Ravenwing! You can't forget it because of some silly Twoleg pet!

Ravenwing bristled slightly as the kittypet noticed her and started towards the fence, expecting her to jump up. She was pleasantly surprised when she stayed on the ground; she had the advantage as long as she was higher than her opponent. Every ThunderClan apprentice was taught this, as climbbing trees was a part of who they were. The warrior listened curiously as the kittypet spoke, doing her best to hide her contempt for her and her kind. Oriole, huh? Do all kittypets have weird names? She mused over her response for a moment. There was a chance that Oriole could help her, but weren't kittypets scared of Clan cats? Would she have to pretend to be a kittypet? "My name... is Raven." She meowed, hoping that that name was at least somewhat believable.

Oriole saw the she-cat bristle but ignored it, keeping her gaze on the cat above her, hoping the strange cat wasn't leaving too deep clawmarks in her TwoLegs fence. She sat down neatly, her calico fur perfectly groomed since she had been brushed this morning. She smelled something weird on the cat's pelt, kind of like the food her TwoLeg gave her but more.... raw. It smelled weird, and she almost recoiled. So many scents were clinging to this cat's pelt and she couldn't sort them out, so she didn't bother trying. She purred at the cat, hoping she seemed welcoming. She wondered when the cat would come off the fence, and she flicked her ears cheerfully.
Raven, thought Oriole, wondering what a cool name that was. So many thoughts ran through her mind, and she felt herself getting giddy with excitement. This cat was much older and maybe could teach her some things! "Raven! That's awesome!" She purred, her gaze glittering with naive wonder like usual. "Where's your TwoLegs? Are you lost?" She asked worriedly, wondering if maybe she needed help getting back to her house. If she did, what a fun adventure that would be! "I noticed you don't have a collar. Can you not find your yard?" She offered, really wanting to help this cat. She liked impressing those older than her, and Raven seemed generally nice so far, even if she was a little standoffish.

Ravenwing couldn't help but feel put out when she noticed what perfect condition Oriole was in: well groomed pelt, lack of scars, ears without a single nick... and here she sat, with black fur that she used as an excuse not to wash as often as should, scars across her flanks and a considerable chunk taken out of one ear. She turned her head slightly to hide the torn ear and silently thanked StarClan that her thick pelt hid most of her scars. They'd be dead giveaways as to what she really was.

The warrior was rather surprised by Oriole's response, her emerald eyes widening slightly. Her name was... awesome? Well, the first half, anyway. Still, it felt nice to be complimented for something other than her sharp claws or powerful nose. The black she-cat dipped her head in embarrassment and licked at the small patch of white fur on her chest. That, as well as her paws and tail tip, were the only parts of her pelt that she tried to take good care of, because, when she did, they looked like patches of fresh snow on her dark fur. She snapped out of her narcissistic stupor when Oriole continued speaking, perking her ears to make sure she hadn't missed anything. She frowned at the questions, suddenly wondering if this was really worth it. You mouse-brain, of course it is!

Shaking off her own self-doubt, she called upon her very mediocre improvisation skills and meowed, "I'm not sure where my Twolegs are. I was exploring and now I can't find my way back." There. That was believable, right? Kittypets could be adventurous. Maybe...

Oriole’s ears flattened slightly, her pelt pricking with sympathy for the older cat. She had never ventured far, and therefore had never been separated from her TwoLeg, but she imagined it was awful. It must be pretty scary, she thought, padding up to the fence. The molly dug her stubby claws in and clumsily clawed her way up, finally perching on the tip of the fence next to Raven, who she assumed to be her new friend. She perked up at the thought of possibly helping the cat find her way back to her owners, and somehow be a younger support to this cat, even if they barely knew each other.

Still, a question pricked at the back of her mind. Naive as Oriole was, she wasn’t completely stupid. If this cat was a kitty pet - well, what reason would she have to lie? - why did her pelt smell so weird? As Oriole sat next to her, she forced out a purr. “Oh, that must be terrible!” She fretted, digging her claws into the wood and trying not to recoil at the She-cats scent. The scent of animals and plants and bugs and food clung to her pelt, but not a single trace of TwoLeg scent was on her. Even so, Oriole made sure that her reaction was subtle so that Raven wouldn’t notice it. The calico flicked her little tail against Raven’s flank comfortingly, though Raven was balancing much more easily on the fence than Oriole was.

“I can help you get back!” Oriole quickly offered, energized at the prospect of having an adventure. She felt bad for her lost kittypet friend, and really wanted to help, although she had never really ventured outside her own yard. Even so, she was determined to help this strange cat.

Ravenwing watched cautiously as Oriole approached the fence; she shuffled backwards slightly as the kittypet climbed up beside her, trying not to show her satisfaction in the fact that she appeared to have better balance. Only now that she was beside Oriole did the black she-cat realise how different they were, even without the finer details. She was taller than the kittypet, which made since she was probably older, and was more muscular and thin. Oriole definitely wasn't fat, but she was plump enough to show that she ate well each day. Like... a RiverClan cat that wasn't waterproof.

She had to force herself not to gag as Oriole meowed again, her words meaning truly nothing more than dirt to Ravenwing. The kittypet seemed nice enough, but she was just a means of finding her goal. Her green gaze finally settled on the calico and she noticed some sort of... uncertainty, almost, as if Oriole were curious about something but didn't want to ask. Ravenwing's confusion was quickly swept away when she felt a tail tip brush her flank. She flinched away slightly, shifting once again just in case the fur had been disturbed, which would reveal the scars on her haunches. She tried to hide the action by hurriedly responding to Oriole's offer. "That would be great, thank you!" She meowed a little too quickly. Mouse-brain!

When Raven shuffled away and seemed repulsed by her, Oriole also drew back, wondering if she had done something wrong. Maybe she shouldn't have offered. The molly wondered if she had just lost her strange new friend, and she winced, more at herself than the actions of Raven. She opened her mouth to say something, seeing something flash on Raven's haunches. When the strange she-cat spoke, Oriole opened her mouth to respond, but suddenly her calico fur grew ruffled. Her ears pricked erect, and she opened her mouth slightly as if to scent something. Her gaze whipped towards Oriole, her green eyes flashing with concern. A sound came from the driveway in the front of the house, like a monster pulling into the driveway.

"Come on!" Hurriedly whispered Oriole, hopping off the fence. She stumbled, never having been on this side many times before. Since she hadn't planned well, her paw snagged on a root, and she did a messy tumble onto the ground before pulling herself up. Grass littered her pelt but she looked up expectantly at Raven, as if Raven should know what was going on. But when no answer availed, Oriole heard a TwoLeg shout from the driveway, she urged Raven to jump off quickly and hide behind the fence like she was. "My TwoLeg doesn't like strange cats in her yard!" She warned, her eyes flicking from her house to Raven and back.

Ravenwing's ear twitched and she looked up in alarm. That sounded like a monster! The black she-cat glanced back to Oriole, only to realise that the kittypet had leapt from the fence and landed rather ungracefully on the ground below. The warrior quickly followed, hitting the ground without missing a step and ducking against the bottom of the fence where the calico waited. She took a moment to feel smug about how much more used to the uneven ground here she was, and how easily she crossed it compared to Oriole. In the kittypet's defense, she seemed quite young, so she might get more experience on this side of her fence in the future.

She tensed slightly when she heard a Twoleg yelling. Of course, you mouse-brain! Kittypets have Twolegs! Ravenwing pressed harder against the fence, curling her tail to hide her exposed flank, not wanting to let her fear of these creatures ruin her mission. She flicked her ear at Oriole's words, not really sure whether to be offended or happy. I'm not that strange! Although I guess I don't look much like a kittypet... She shook her head to clear the thought and stared up at the top of the fence, as if she expected a Twoleg's face to pop over the top any second, for its giant hairless paw to reach down and grab her and tie one of those horrid collars around her throat. How did kittypets even breathe with those things on?

(I'm in school, sorry! :heartbounce: )

Oriole noticed how tense the molly next to her was, and wondered why she seemed so frightened. Had Oriole accidently made her TwoLeg evil? All she had said was that her TwoLeg didn't appreciate newcomers... why did Raven seem so frightened? Oriole wanted to ask, but at the same time, the young cat wasn't sure she wanted to know. As the she-cat watched, she saw Raven flinch at the yell, and then her eyes glitter with offense. Oriole was certainly confused, but she stayed back, wondering when her TwoLeg would pass, or if she would leave again. The calico held her breath, watching the fence above her intently with her bright green optics.
Finally, she heard the Monster door slam shut, and she let out a relieved breath, a smile stretching on her face as she heard it roar away. After a second, Oriole gave a little bounce on her paws, although she looked pathetically small next to Raven. Her calico fur stood on end as she purred in triumpg, turning to her new friend. "We're safe! We can go find your Twoleg!" She told her, her mottled tail waving behind her as her collar jingled.
The whole situation gave Oriole a strange feeling, like something was wrong. Like Raven wasn't who she seemed. But, being the naive cat she was, the molly shook it off a cat would shake off a flea, and instead sat there beaming, like usual. She usually was one of the most positive cats she knew, and she knew her Twoleg liked that about her. It made her feel happy, knowing that she had not only pleased her human, but the other cats around her. It certainly was one of her best attributes, even if it did contribute to her naivety. Her ear flicked subtly as she thought about it, eagerly waiting on a response from Raven.

(It's fine! Getting back to school is hard...)

Ravenwing sighed with relief as she heard the roar of the monster grow distant, allowing her muscles to relax as she pulled herself away from the fence. After a scare like that, she'd usually go sit by the river for a while to calm down, and she had to fight the urge to run off into the forest right there and then. Instead she sat up straight and raised her paw, hissing in annoyance when she noticed a tuft of grass beneath her claws. She quickly pulled it out and looked back to Oriole just in time to hear her words.

"That's great!" She meowed, trying to sound more enthusiastic then she felt. She subtly smoothed the fur on her flanks with her tail as she tried to remember what she was looking for. The nest was similar to all of the Twoleg nests nearby, but... "I'm not sure where our nest is, but I know there's these bushes in front of it, with big purple flowers." It was the only thing she could remember about her destination, and the only thing to distinguish it from the nests around it. She just hoped that Oriole had some idea of where the nest was. If she doesn't, I'll just leave and find a different kittypet to ask tomorrow. I'm not giving up until I've found that nest!

(Agreed!)

Oriole detected the enthusiasm in the older cats voice and rocked excitedly on her paws, her small tail waving. A purr escaped her, making her fur bristle slightly at the possible pursuit of adventure. She waited a few seconds to make sure her Twoleg was really gone, and when no further sounds came from the driveway, she thought about what Raven had said. She tipped her head in thought, although it would avail nothing. Everything the molly knew was from words, not from seeing it herself, for she had never ventured out. The only houses she had seen were across the streets. Across the street! We can check there! Oriole grinned at her companion and messily clawed her way up the fence, making sure not to leave any noticeable scratches. Her glittering green eyes looked down at Raven, sparked with bubbly and naive positivity.

"Across the street, there's a few dens," she told Raven, her tail pointing towards the front of the house. She couldn't recall what they looked like in detail, but at least she knew they were there. "One of them might be your Twoleg nest. Oh, that would be so cool if our nests were close!" She added, staring out at the houses, craning her neck to see them better. "We could talk anytime we want! When my Twoleg lets me out, of course." Her collar jingled as she looked back expectantly at her mysterious new friend, more excited than she had ever been in her short life. How naive the young can be, and how curious the naive will become. Desperately she tried to recall what the houses looked like, and if any of them had big purple flowers in the front.
How pretty they sound, she thought to herself.

Ravenwing forced herself to smile at the kittypet's enthusiasm, which wasn't too hard since she was actually glad that Oriole was willing and eager to help out. It made things so much easier! She watched in amusement as the calico scrambled back up the fence, waiting a few moments before following after her, reaching the top in one graceful leap. "Why are you so unsteady on your fence? Have you never been outside before?" She meowed jokingly, suddenly surprised at herself for being so friendly to a kittypet. Well, at least it made it easier to keep up her act.

She followed Oriole's gaze to the nests across the 'street' and frowned thoughtfully. She had no idea where the nest she was looking for was, so it was as good a place to start as any. But what was a street? Did she mean Thunderpath? Was that what kittypets called them? Or maybe it was one of those stone pathways Twolegs walked on? Ravenwing shook the thoughts away in time to hear Oriole's next words. "That sounds nice. You're fun to talk to." It wasn't a complete lie; the warrior did enjoy this kittypet's personality, and she seemed nice enough and not too suspicious. The black she-cat's ear twitched as she heard Oriole's collar jingle. What was it that made them do that? Was it the little golden ball attached to them? That had to make it hard to hunt. If Oriole did, that was. Deciding to take a risk, Ravenwing meowed, "Doesn't your collar ever annoy you? It lets cats know you're there long before they see you." She decided not to add anything about scaring off prey.

In the distance, there was the faint swishing and closing of a flap and a few moments later a fairly plump tom lumbered over to the fence. His long white fur seemed to glow in the sunlight and his wide green eyes gazed up at the cats.

Oriole looked down at Raven in confusion, her gaze sparkling as she thought over the she-cats words. She tilted her dappled head slightly, wondering why this cat considered her "clumsy". She didn't consider herself clumsy, but careful of her owners fence. If she had scored thick claw marks in it, her owner surely wouldn't be giving her any more treats for a long time! The young molly swiped her tongue around her jaws, just at the mere thought of them. "My TwoLeg doesn't like claw marks on her fence," she explained to her friend. "She'd get mad if I ruined it." The sharp-smelling wood felt stable under her paws, so she didn't have a reason to dig her claws in anyway. She always climbed on it softly so there wouldn't be a trace left. Secretly, to herself, she wondered if Raven's TwoLeg always kept her inside - either that, or her TwoLeg didn't own a fence. Yet most people in the neighborhood had one in their yards, to keep their pets safe. How thoughtful Oriole always thought it was.

The molly warmed at Raven's words, feeling like she finally had a friend for once. Since she was so young, not many cats came over to visit her. She purred in gratefulness. "Thank you! You are too," she added, wanting to return the compliment so she wouldn't seem impudent. She liked how friendly the black she-cat was, and she didn't want to make her annoyed. In a leap she jumped from the fence to the ground. Just barely keeping herself on her paws as she hit the grass, turning to face Raven, proud of her semi-neat landing she had made. "Of course not! Didn't your TwoLeg give you one?" She asked, puzzled. Her calico fur rippled as she awaited a response.

Ravenwing turned her gaze to the fence beneath her as Oriole spoke, a sudden turmoil coming to mind: should she scratch the fence to spite the Twolegs for what they did, or keep her claws sheathed to keep up her act? In the end she decided not to torment Oriole's owner; they had nothing to do with the Twoleg she hated, after all. Although she did hate the way the fence wobbled slightly beneath her, not enough to unbalance her or even, so it seemed, unnerve Oriole, but it still made her feel weird. She'd never been the most confident climber, even as a ThunderClan cat, but at least she understood branches! Why did Twolegs even have fences? Was it to mark their territory? If so, then it wasn't very effective.

She watched as Oriole left the fence, surprised to feel a subtle burst of pride when the kittypet landing without stumbling. Her thoughts suddenly began to spiral; could Oriole ever learn to hunt or fight? Maybe I could teach her. She could be my unofficial apprentice! Not that it would matter to my Clanmates. They'd probably be upset by it, actually. Gah, why am I even thinking about this? A kittypet could never become a warrior. She quickly halted her train of thought before she began to ponder the opposite, not wanting to have one of her episodes in front of Oriole. The black she-cat shook her head to clear it and looked up just in time to hear the calico's question. "No, they never did." She tried to think back, tried to remember the last words that they had spoken to her. What had they called it? A micro... something or other? Come on, Ravenwing, don't blow your cover now! Micro... micro... microchip! "They gave me a microchip instead. That way I don't have to worry about losing the collar."

"Oh! That's really smart!" Purred Oriole, wondering why her TwoLegs hadn't given her one of those instead. They sure did seem fancy to her, but they also seemed quite scary. Oriole had heard many stories of what TwoLegs do to cats as they get older. Luckily, Oriole was still too young and had only gone to the vet once in her life, when she was born. Not yet had she been spayed and lost all her young energy - one she was fixed, she would become just like every other cat on the block. Lonely, plump, with no joy left for life. Of course she had heard these things, but she was certain it wasn't as terrible as it sounds. In fact, she heard it more like she would become more mature. She purred with pride, wondering when her time would come. Her green eyes sparkled as she shrugged, waiting for Raven to finally come down off the fence. The she-cat almost sighed with relief when she saw that Raven's claws were sheathed and had left no marks on the fence. "You don't get a cute little bell though," Oriole lamented, pawing at hers playfully, the ring quietly ricocheting in her ears.

The calico looked out at the street, only a few fox-lengths away. Although she couldn't see much of it, she heard the cars going by and saw the metallic flash of some bright color every once in awhile. Her tail swished, but she was far enough away that the vibrations from the large trucks didn't make her sway on her paws. Bright reds like roses and blue like the sky flashed by the small gap between her house and her fence, and Oriole suddenly wondered how she was supposed to get across the street to return Raven to her home. Fear suddenly coursed through her friends, but the young and naive molly was determined to look brave in front of her new friend. She forced herself to stand straight and look out over the road, her paws itching to just get across it and get away from the danger as fast as possible. To herself, she worried about how her TwoLeg would react if she happened to come home and realize Oriole wasn't there. Her purr died in her throat, wondering if she'd get in trouble for her adventure. Not saying anything, her tail waved anxiously behind her, suddenly fearful of the day to come.

Ravenwing smiled to herself, relieved that she'd managed to think of an excuse that made sense, not to mention being able to recall that final conversation without breaking down. Her ears twitched at Oriole's next words and she fought back a sigh. You think that 'bell' is cute? It's a nuisance, that's what it is. You can never sneak up on cats or enemies, let alone prey! Do you seriously live off of those weird rabbit droppings Twolegs feed you? "Well, I guess not." She eventually meowed, looking down at the kittypet and tensing the muscles in her haunches. "But at least it means that I can do this-" The black she-cat took off with a flying leap, landing neatly on small white paws beside the calico with barely a sound. "-without letting everyone know I'm here."

Her bragging rights expended for the moment, the warrior followed Oriole's gaze and froze, tensing as she saw monsters flashing by just a few nests away. She forced herself to relax again, not wanting to betray her fear; a kittypet would be used to Thunderpaths. But even so, she couldn't help remembering her trip to the Starcave as an apprentice, crossing a Thunderpath out of ThunderClan territory and feeling the cold, hard pelt of a monster hit the tip of her tail. Calm down, Ravenwing. You've done it before and you can do it again! Don't let Oriole see you're scared; kittypets have seen and heard Thunderpaths a bunch of times, pretty much every day of their life. They know how to cross, and so do you. Just stay calm, scent the air, listen for monsters, look both ways, then run. She shook her head quickly to clear it and looked back at Oriole, meowing as calmly as she could, "Shall we get going, then?"

Oriole watched with wide eyes as Raven leapt effortlessly off of the fence, her paws hitting the ground almost silently. Before the housecat could even process what had happened, her friend was on the ground, awaiting a response from her. Shocked, the molly gaped in amazement. How did she do that without making a single sound. Her ears perked erect, her mottled tail waving behind her with her excitement, her fur slightly bristled. She had known Raven to be a slightly strange cat, but she had never expected her to be so... talented! Never in her life had the she-cat seen a cat able to accomplish such a feat that she had not thought possible. "That was amazing!" Purred Oriole, obviously impressed for such a young cat. "You're like a ghost! That's so cool!" Suddenly, Oriole began to think of this cat as a superior to her, someone with skills she had never even thought to achieve. This made her sad and slightly mystified at the same time, but she didn't show it. She subtly dug her claws into the ground and tried to jump, although she was already on the ground, but she could barely get herself off the ground. She shook her head to herself to clear her mind, and looked back at Raven with the same curious gaze she always seemed to have.

The molly gave Raven a tiny nod, wondering how they were supposed to cross the path. Determined not to look fearful and kitten-like, she flattened her fur and puffed out her chest, although her heart was going at a million miles an hour as she thought of darting between the cars on the street. Not knowing of death, but only of minor pain, the naive housecat wondered what would happen if one of the cars went to hit her. Part of her thought maybe the TwoLeg would grab her and catnap her, but another part of her seemed to suspect that it would be something a little more dire. "Let's go!" She responded, sounding triumphant, and padded quickly down the yard and to the side of her house, brushing the rose bush that her TwoLeg had planted a few moons ago, before Oriole was born. She took a deep breath of the sickly sweet scent and looked ahead, her gaze fixed on the road, just a few fox-lengths away beyond the short driveway. Oriole nearly trembled as monsters whipped by, slightly feeling their impact through the ground, but she forced herself to stand up straight like her paws were made of ice, rooted to the ground. The thought amused her, but it still wasn't able to calm her mind. As determined as she was fearful, she promised to herself she needed to put on as much of a brave show as her new friend.

Ravenwing purred pridefully at the praise, surprised that a kittypet of all cats had elicited this response. She covered it up by meowing, "It's really not that hard! You just have to make sure to land on your pads." She was about to lift her paws as if to demonstrate, only to quickly put it back down when she remembered the scratches she'd gotten across her paw pads from scrambling awkwardly down a tree after chasing a squirrel. The medicine cat had taken care of it and they no longer stung, but it was still pretty obvious where the wood had dug into the soft skin. Didn't want Oriole to be seeing that... She licked flat the tuft of white fur on her chest to hide her awkwardness. When Oriole started padding away, she gladly hurried to catch up.

The ThunderClan warrior started taking deep breaths to slow her heart and keep her fur flat as they approached the Thunderpath. She happily drank in the scent of the rose bush they walked past, recognising the scent from the small bushes found in the forest, although they did smell a little different. They were at the front of the Twoleg nest now, and Ravenwing was uncomfortably aware of Twolegs doing Twoleg things beside their own nests, and harshly coloured monsters flashing past every other moment just a fox-length away. She halted there, waiting nervously with hot air ruffling her fur and whiskers as monsters ran by, their giant round paws eating up the strange black stone of the Thunderpath. She was always told that monsters never left the Thunderpath, but that was the monsters that passed through the forest. She didn't know how these Twolegplace monsters worked! They saw kittypets every day, but what if they saw her, recognised her as a Clan cat, and decided that she might be a tasty snack? Gulping, she fluffed out her fur and meowed, "Oriole, have you crossed one of these before?"

"That's so cool!!" Raved Oriole over her shoulder, before turning her head back to the street. Her green gaze widened as she approached it, the hot wind from the cars blasting her pelt. Her ears flattened slightly, as she hadn't expected the street to be this... rough. The vibrations came up through the ground and shook the little cat, making it appear as if she was shivering, although it was a rather warm day. The paws of the cars pummeled the path and she stumbled back as one roared alarmingly near, her calico fur bristling, betraying the fear she was feeling in that one moment. When it passed, she turned back to Raven, her tail whipping back and forth. She felt like an idiot, making such a kitten-like show in front of her friend. Silently, she feared that Raven would think less of her, and their friendship was all but over. Raven must have thought of her as weak by now, and she swallowed hard, feeling extremely guilty when she realized she seemed to also be slightly alarmed by the cars roaring maliciously by.

When Oriole realized she couldn't give Raven a good answer, she slumped down in defeat, her eyes on her paws, when another monster roared past. This time she backed up a few steps, just in time to see the shiny blue pelt flash by, a fox-length in front of her. After a hesitated second, the molly shook her head subtly, so small she would have missed it if she was simply a passerby. "Not before," she conceded, glancing guiltily at Raven. "I haven't even walked up to it before. I had just seen it from the yard and out the window." She thought back to the first time she had seen it, when she was brought to her new TwoLeg, and how she had looked out the window every day since to see if there were any new cats to meet. Oriole had been rather lonely in her complex, the passerby cats rarely ever coming back a second time. "I jump up on the couch when my TwoLeg isn't around and stare out the window. The only time they're ever calm is at night, and there are only a few prowling around."

Ravenwing sucked in her breath and sat down where she stood, a few tail-lengths away from the Thunderpath. She was close enough to feel the air they pushed along ruffle her chest fur, but still far enough away to be able to run if one noticed her. She watched Oriole out of the corner of her eye, feeling a perverse satisfaction when she realised that the kittypet looked as scared as the warrior felt. She immediately felt guilty; she was just as terrified, and Oriole was still young, very young. She shouldn't be happy that the calico was scared. Don't feel bad for a kittypet! But... don't wish for her to be scared, either. That's just not nice.

She watched Oriole as the kittypet slumped to the ground beside her, only to back away when another monster flashed by. The black she-cat nodded subtly as Oriole replied to her question; she'd expected as much. "Don't worry about it, Oriole. You're young; it makes sense that you wouldn't have crossed one of these before. Why would you need to?" You're a kittypet, so you don't really have anywhere to go. Not that there's places to hunt around here anyway. The green-eyed she-cat stood up and perked her ears, hearing the distant buzz of an approaching monster. "Luckily for you, I've done this before. You just have to trust me." She padded up to the edge of the Thunderpath, digging her claws into the tufts of grass and waiting as the monster grew closer. "When I say go, run as fast as you can to the other side." A heartbeat passed and the monster roared by, followed by another, and then complete silence. "Go!"

Raven said everything so fast, Oriole wasn't really sure she had heard everything she had supposed to. Only her friend's last words burned into her mind, she swallowed hard and saw the black cat race across the street faster then she had ever seen anything run in her. Swallowing hard, the kittypet threw herself across as she didn't see anything approaching. She heard a buzzing out of the corner of her ear, but the young cat ignored it and pressed on hard - too hard. Suddenly, she felt herself go down, her calico fur flattened on the pavement as she stumbled and rolled over herself. Her heart leapt into her throat and she felt herself scrambling to get up, the black stretch of stone in front of her seeming more ominous then it ever had out of her little window. The buzzing in her ear had grown to roaring, and when she forced herself to look to the size, she saw a huge car pummeling the path, closer and closer. Wailing, Oriole picked herself back up and pounded across the street, nearly stumbling over her small paws again as she forced herself to go faster and faster. Leaping up onto the side walk, she was sure Raven could hear her heart beating. Breathing fast, she saw the car roar past her just a mere second after she had pulled herself onto the sidewalk.

Panting, she realized she had made it. Although she hurt, and the experience had been terrifying, she knew she had just passed the first test of her journey. Her tail waved and she glanced at Raven, her eyes brightening as she saw her friend was also safely across. "I made it!" She squealed, extremely proud of herself. As she spoke, she felt a sharp pain pulsing on her foreleg, but she gritted her teeth and forced herself to ignore it, feeling blood well up where she had scraped it on the street. She simply shook her paw, which did nothing but scatted scarlet drops across the pavement. She quickly lapped at it, the injury merely a scrape, but she had not been expecting it. Through the slight pain, she glanced quizzically at it, and returned her horribly puzzled gaze to Raven. "Why is there red water coming from my leg?" She asked panickedly.

Ravenwing barked out the order before pelting across the Thunderpath, scraping her paw pads, used to the soft grass of the forests, on the hard black stone. She bounded the last few tail-lengths and landed a little more clumsily than she was willing to admit on the lighter stone on the other side. Hissing in annoyance, she stood up and shook the grit from her pelt before looking around for Oriole. She heard a wail and turned her gaze to the Thunderpath, her breath hitching in her throat when she saw the young kittypet rushing towards the Twoleg path with a monster bearing down towards her. The black she-cat was halfway back to the Thunderpath when Oriole picked up speed and threw herself onto the path. Sighing with relief, Ravenwing padded over to the younger she-cat, surprised at how happy she was that the kittypet had escaped.

She purred with amusement at Oriole's excited squeal, only to go silent, her eyes widening when she saw drops of scarlet scattered on the path around the young calico. Gulping, the ThunderClan warrior padded over to the kittypet and sat down beside her as she asked her panicked question. Ravenwing peered closer at the injury, relief flooding through her when she realised that it was just a scrape. "That red water is called blood. It's what keeps us cats alive and breathing. It's supposed to stay inside our bodies, but it comes out sometimes if you injure yourself." She looked around, concerned, wondering if there was any herbs around here. She'd heard of catmint growing in Twolegplace, but that didn't really help wounds. With a jolt of joyful surprise she noticed a cobweb stretched across two pieces of wood on a Twoleg's fence. She hurried over and scraped the web away; she padded back over to Oriole and sat down once again, lifting her cobweb-wrapped paw to show the kittypet. "These cobwebs should stop the bleeding."

(Sorry it's a little shorter then normal.)
---
The whole concept of "blood" was new and frightening to Oriole. Why did the pain make her feel so weird, and why did she expel red water? Does that mean there was something wrong with her? With thoughts racing through her mind, she was about to throw a tourbillon of questions at Raven, but then saw the black molly dashing over to a fence. Oriole stood in confusion as she saw Raven scrape her paw down the wood, but she couldn't exactly see why or what was going on. Cocking her head with a puzzled look as her friend returned with a wad of sticky stuff attached to her paw, she peered at it and gave it a confused sniff, never seeing anything of the sort. Her collar jingled as Raven explained, and hesitantly scraped some of the webs off with her claws, feeling it stick to her paws weirdly. Wrinkling her muzzle in apprehension at the new object, she dabbed her paw at where the blood was coming from until it stuck to her fur. The feeling was surely strange, of something sticking and clumping in red-stained fur, but she noticed with a pick of excitement that there was no more red water coming from her. Quickly the molly scraped her paw against the sidewalk to get rid of the excess cobwebs, and glanced at Raven gratefully as she gave a little bounce of excitement on her paws.

"It stopped!" She purred, affixing her gaze to the little ball of white sticky web on the pavement. Now that she looked at it, it kind of looked like a yarn ball. She dabbed at it with her white paw, but it barely moved and just flattened against the pavement. "What is this stuff?" She asked with amusement. Carefully she wondered if she could bring some of it back to her TwoLeg as a present. But, it was fairly sticky, and she was afraid that if she picked it up she would never be able to get it out of her mouth. Oriole suddenly recoiled at the thought. Her mottled tail flicked as a car blasted by, and she felt the hot wind blast her flanks. Even though they were out of danger,
she flicked her tail and quickly hopped back so that she could be away from their tangy, hot stone stench.

(It's fine)

Ravenwing waited until Oriole had taken some of the web from her paw before lowering it and gently teasing the rest of the strands from her claws with the stone of the path below her. She lifted her head and watched cautiously as the kittypet applied it to her wound. The job was a little messy and the cobwebs would no doubt fall off with a little running, but at least the bleeding had stopped; scrapes didn't usually start bleeding again, so she felt Oriole was in the clear. Such shallow wounds rarely got infected. The black she-cat smiled at the small calico, her green eyes shining with relief, that they'd made it across the Thunderpath safely and that Oriole's wound wasn't dangerous.

"That 'stuff' is called cobweb." Ravenwing meowed, flicking her tail around to wrap around her paws. She could still remember the first time she'd scratched herself on a bramble and had to have the medicine cat cover it with cobwebs. She'd thought the thing she'd be best at would be hurting herself! "Spiders make it so that they can walk to places most creatures can't reach. But I use it to cover any scratches I get." She'd nearly said Wheatfur... Ugh, I need to stop thinking about ThunderClan, or else I'm going to start talking about it in front of the one cat I can't afford to! She only realised a moment later that most kittypets didn't get scratches often. "The, uh, the fence outside my Twoleg's house is a little flimsier than most, so I tend to scratch myself on the sharper bits of wood." She explained hurriedly, silently cursing her own inability to act.

"That sounds sad," said Oriole. She couldn't imagine what she would do if her TwoLeg fence scratched her every single time she tried to climb it. She often sat atop it's planks and looked out into the sharp beech and pine trees, the smell of it always welcoming. Never before had she set paw after it - now, she was venturing into the unknown, which she had only known existed because she had glimpsed it. Now, that she was here, on the other side of her comfort zone, it felt awfully strange. Kind of like a dream tinged with a little bit of a nightmare. Even so, Oriole found it odd that Raven scratched herself on her TwoLeg fence a lot - even now, as she looked at the molly, she realized she looked a little rougher and leaner then the other kittypets she had encountered. Ignoring it, she internally shrugged and went back to what she was saying. Padding away from the sidewalk quickly, she jumped onto the grass. The coolness of the blades soothed her paws, but she made sure not to put much weight on her agonized foreleg. "My TwoLeg's fence is soft, so it's easy and painless to climb. I like to look into the forest," she admitted, having never really said that to anyone. She wondered it was comfortable out in the forest - soft pines, blanketed by clouds... why wouldn't it be? Even so, she had heard terrible stories of the dangerous wildcats that lived in the forest, who killed cats and humans alike and feasted on their bones with their fangs as sharp as thorns... she shivered and her gaze flashed as she looked up at Raven, tilting her head. She wondered if her friend had ever heard any of these tormenting tales.

"Have you ever been out into the forest?" She asked innocently, her tail curling and flicking around her paws restlessly. "Have you heard the stories of the wildcats?" She immediately felt embarrassed, as if she had still been believing kit stories. But they had seemed awfully true. The calico shuffled her paws. "I know that sounds stupid but... I've heard of cats who live out there and chew on bones. It sounds horrifying..." Images of thorn sharp claws and red-stained muzzled flashed into her mind and she shivered just thinking about it.

She immediately felt embarrassed, as if she had still been believing kit stories.

"It's not that bad. I've gotten used to it now, so I know how to avoid most of the sharper pieces of wood." Ravenwing improvised, suddenly wishing that she could just get on with her mission already before the sun began to fall. She held in a sigh of relief as Oriole padded towards another patch of grass; she hurried after the kittypet, relieved to be back on soft ground after that terrifying dash across the hard Thunderpath. She lifted one paw to look at the pad underneath and hissed in annoyance when she saw the grit embedded into the soft skin. Luckily she hadn't actually drawn blood, and a few swift licks soothed her stinging paws. When Oriole admitted that she watched the forest, the black she-cat looked up curiously, forgetting the tiny stones left in her other paws. Kittypets can like the wild? That's... crazy!

Crazier still was the kittypet's question as to whether Ravenwing had ever been to the forest. Of course I've been there! I sleep there every night! She held back those thoughts and instead chose her words carefully, pausing before meowing, "Yes, I've been into the forest. And yes, I've heard the stories. But I can tell you now, they're not true." She hesitated; if she said too much then she'd probably end up preaching about how amazing the Clans were. Then Oriole would ask how she knew those things. "I only went there once, following a squirrel that poked it's head into my garden. I met a couple cats while I was there, and they seemed... surprisingly nice." She found herself remembering the day she was battle training with Bluepaw, and he'd just managed to wrestle her to the ground when a rogue poked their head into the clearing. Neither of them were very confrontational, so they'd warned the rogue off after explaining what they'd intruded on. Maybe she should pretend to be that rogue; it might help her stop herself from shouting all of ThunderClan's secrets to the whole of Twolegplace.

Raven's words sounded more then casual, but Oriole sure found it strange that her friend seemed to be... defending these cats. The cats who had told her these stories had had no reason to lie, but wasn't Raven a trustworthy source too? The molly felt torn and her tail flicked behind her to the beat of her racing mind. "Nice?" She said, disbelief laced in her voice. Although she really did want to get going and look for Raven's Twolegs, she really wanted to have these questions answered. While she waited for a response, she lapped at her paw and drew it over her ear, her mottled pelt bristling. "That must have been so scary!" She sympathized. "Walking in on more then one of them... I would be terrified. What were they doing? Were they chewing on bones?" She pryed. Soon, the young molly realized what a stupid question that had been - Raven wouldn't describe a group of cats as "nice" if she walked in on them eating bones. Oriole laughed in amusement at herself. "Nevermind, sorry," she apologized, her ears pricking erect. Her green eyes glittered and she turned her head to look around at the row of Twoleg houses behind them. But now that the two were a comfortable distance from the street, Oriole didn't see a reason to rush. She padded a few steps back before turning to face her new friend.

Nervously she wondered if Raven thought she was weird for looking out into the forest sometimes. She recalled that when she had finally admitted it, she had seen some undetectable emotion flash in Raven's eyes. Being so young, and experienced so few of her kind, Oriole barely knew excitement from crestfallen. Rolling her shoulders back and waving her tail, she suddenly felt an urge to get on with her mission. To her, it was a journey - even if it was only a little across the street. But now, she felt as if she had gone through so much, and the pain pulsing in her foreleg reminded her. There was no way she could stop now. Quietly she purred to herself, wondering if after this her and Raven would still stay friends. Anyways, Oriole lived pretty close to Raven's house - right? At least, that's what she thought...

Ravenwing's whiskers twitched with amusement at Oriole's disbelief. Of course this kittypet wouldn't believe that Clan cats could be nice. How would she react if she learned she'd been talking to one for the past few minutes? "Yes, nice. They weren't exactly welcoming, but they didn't shred me." I told Bluepaw not to attack the rogue. We told them that they were on our territory and gently warned them away. Luckily they just hadn't noticed where they'd strayed to and weren't looking for a fight. She lifted a paw once again and carefully began to clean away the grit and dirt, relieved that this one hadn't truly scratched either. Her ears perked as Oriole spoke again. "No, no, it's fine. And no, they weren't eating bones. They were fighting though." She pretended to look thoughtful before adding, "Although they had their claws sheathed, so I don't think it was serious."

She padded after Oriole, looking around at all the Twoleg things around her. Would she even be able to find her way out of here after finding that nest? Could she ask Oriole to lead her back? No; the kittypet would want to know why she had gone back to her nest, and then immediately want to leave again. Her tail twitched nervously. Oh StarClan, what if I get stuck here forever? Say your last goodbyes, Ravenwing! The black she-cat held in a sigh, feeling her lips curl into a smile as she heard Oriole's purr. At least you're safe, kittypet. You're going to take me somewhere I have no idea how to get back from and just leave. Go back to your comfortable, pampered kittypet life. I'd call you lucky if I didn't have such good friends back home in ThunderClan.
