ghost by the window [open]

[bringing it back]

"Hey! Did you see it?"

"What?"

"The cat. It was there a minute ago.."

"You're just seeing things."

Once upon a time, a beautiful white house in the city that was filled with twolegs ended up packing one day and disappeared. After that, constructions of new houses was built a block away but for some reason they never bothered tearing down the old white house, leaving it for vegetation to flourish around it from outside and in. Paint peeling, birch wood inside continued to rot, lifting up all over has vines intertwined with it and family portraits still hung on the walls that's caked in dust. Many traveling cats attempted to enter the home yet tall, thick weeds and rats made it unapproachable so they passed by. And others felt a cold chill down their spine once stepping in and spooked out seeing a white cat looking out the window then disappearing in a blink of an eye. Rumors sparked that twolegs took everything after a death in the family except for their cat and was left to die. Now the cat haunts the house, still hoping that one day their owner will return.

Though, it's not true. Not the slightest.

It was morning sun-high has the light ray's beam through the broken windows and every cracked crevices of brick walls and dust sprinkled down from ceiling tops making it look like a snowy paradise. "Achoo!" a white cat snoozed away on top of a torn down beam sneezing after every snore till the point he rubbed his paw against his black nose, slowly opening his grey, brown speckled eyes toward the bright window. "Agh, I really gotta clean this place up," he grumbled, stretching out his hind legs and stood up, jumping from one beam to another till he reached the dusty grounds. Casper started off his day by tiding the place a bit so he doesn't have another sneeze-attack like last time. The angora swept the ground with some ferns he found stick through the kitchen window and knocked down some wooden beams that was bound to fall down anytime soon. His eyes scanned around at the white and yellow flowers blooming in his little home. Yes, it's a beautiful sight to see and a blessings to sleep on at times except when it's summer time around. I wonder if that old cat Mastoff is in the city, his mind ran across the old, no good pixie bob tom. He couldn't help it since he was the only cat who raised him..and the only cat who ever visits. Cats tried to enter in yet ran out the second they step inside. I wonder why that happens..

Rook
__________

Here it was, the legendary haunted house of the twolegplace. Well, perhaps not quite legendary and probably not haunted but certainly the talk among the kittypets in the area. It was hard to make your way through the neighborhood without hearing something or other about the old house, especially when there had been a recent 'sighting'. The peeling paint, rotting wood, and overgrown vegetation weren't terribly intimidating during the day but at night they could certainly instill fear in the hearts, and curiosity, of sheltered kittypets. It was easy to see how such stories might emerge from such a place.

That was what brought Rook here - curiosity. The small tom felt an unnatural amount of anxiety standing at the end of the pathway and staring up at the old building. He didn't believe the stories, necessarily, but he hesitated all the same before continuing up the cobblestone walk.

(sorry about the abrupt ending, brain shut down but i wanted to post it anyway a a a @vermin)

Damn this cold!
Casper ran around, zig-zag and hopping to each shaky beam with an abundance lump of bush in his jaws as he stuffed the holes exposing his warm home of the winter cold and repeatedly came back to smear mud over it. His paws coated in dark, cold filth from the back garden. His grey eyes scanned around for any more gaps, holes or sense of any cold breeze coming in eventually spotting on a tiny crack from above. Barreling barrels, it's so high up! And dangerous.. his grey eyes danced around at each beam to see where he should step over to reach all the way up. But, the beams get weaker to the tippy top especially those dusty, questionable joists support the whole dang house. Ugh, damn it all. The pale loner tread lightly and swiftly bouncing over to each obstacle dashing faster once feeling a soft spots on the old, creaky wood and reached out to the exposed crack. "Almost there," his voice strained, reaching up to place a bit of mud on it. Almost..almosttt. But it all crashed down. Literally. The wood couldn't handle a little weight and crumbled under his paws , he screeched loudly hitting into one of the beams before thudding to the ground. Casper laid motionless for a moment before shaking his head, staggering up again. A loud, long groan belted out from him echoing through the household with a soft cuss to himself. Ack, should've known that would happen. Stepping forward the pain jolted from his side again releasing another haunting groan.

Rook
__________

Hearing a strangled screech rang out from the house, Rook echoed with his own cry of bewilderment and terror. The small tom practically tripped over himself as he scrambled back down the pathway by a few tail lengths. Breathing heavily, golden eyes scanned the area for any apparent source of the sound but found no difference in the surroundings. He flinched, ears flat against his head, when two haunting moans emerged from the building.

Every second spent in the overgrown yard felt like an eternity as Rook stared up at the old, weather-beaten structure, debating fleeing this place. The air already held a chill but the area seemed to radiate cold, sending a shiver down his spine. He wasn't one to believe in ghost stories but it seemed entirely possible that this local legend held a bit of truth. And yet, he shook his head and took a few steps up the pathway once more, followed by a couple more. It wasn't long before he stood on the front stoop.

'A kittypet once told me,' he thought,'That that these old twolegs houses start groaning when they get old.'

'But can houses screech?' He quickly pushed the thought out of his mind. He didn't want to think too hard about it. The door sat slightly ajar and he peered in cautiously, prepared to bolt if need be.

[thank you for the bump! a tad rushed , my brain is running on nothing oof]

"Fiddle sticks," he grumbled under his breath. A few limps he checked his body for any injuries and walked off the pain on his side. Humiliating for a cat to not land on his paws! That should've been a natural instinct- something in his blood. But nope! Just a hard thud to the ground. Luckily no cat was around to see that, especially that rude old pixie tom- Ha!, he would've had a kick out of that and never let it rest until he's buried six feet under. "I guess a little hole won't be such a big deal," talking to himself, reassuring as he stared up at the tiny opening, "Hm, yes. Anyways, spring is just around the corner." Casper sat down, thinking momentarily with his eyes shut trying to list his today duties. Even though it's been done the same way every.single.day. Literally. Okay, closed the holes, collected some herbs, flowers, ..what am I missing again? Oh! Some food, yes.
Trotting, high step on his paws happily with a humming tune echoing down the dusty, creeking wood hall he went down the stairs where a shabby door shuttered from the rough breeze. Poor door was barely holding on to whatever is attaching it to the house. But, that's another worry for another time.
Before he could step out, a cat appeared in front of him! "Wh-," first glance he knew it wasn't Mastoff- and that's what frightened the poor white rogue. Scrambling back, grey eyes wide he stuttered. "P-Please..don't hurt me!"

Rook
__________

Coming face to face with a fluffy white feline was the last thing Rook expected as he peered around the door into the front hallway. Some old twoleg things, overgrown vines maybe. Certainly not a cat. Already sufficiently freaked out, the tom took a second and merely stood there and stared back, his brain reaching the point of disconnect and disbelief that the immediate response was not to flee. The fact that this rogue seemed just as frightened of him did not seem to register with Rook and, after trying to blink away the ghost in front of him and subsequently failing, he let out a deep sigh,"I do believe I have either gone insane or there is a real, bonafide ghost standing here in front of me," he meowed, to nobody in particular,"In either case, my day certainly can't get any more interesting than this."

Even with ears unwittingly flattened against his head and fur standing on end, Rook wasn't a particularly intimidating figure. Only 9 moons of age, he still had growing to do, even if he did tend to hold himself with the dignity of somecat much older. Shaking out his pelt, he plopped himself down into a sitting position and continued to stare back and try to comprehend the feline across the way,"Can you answer that for me?" he asked, voice shaking ever so slightly as it does after a rush of adrenaline,"Am I insane or are you a ghost?"

"You're inSANE!!" A raise of a shrill from the depth of his throat, he skid backwards with eyes getting wider at every single movement the rogue made. He scrambled up a step or two, pressuring down all of his weight on a rotten wood that broke underneath him. Falling through, the clumsy tom landed on his face again as dust rise in clouds between them. There was silence for a minute, frozen in time he wouldn't dare to move an inch. Questions raced around his mind like field mouse speeding through open grounds. Why is a rogue here? What does he want? Is he here to hurt me? Must be related to Mastoff! I should've never let him stay in my home. He only gives me trouble, peace does not exist with him! Ah..what should I do now?! What should I do, What should I do, What should I do?! Almost forgetting the last part he mentioned a ..ghost? Is that some kind of joke before the kill? "N-no.. I am not a ghost," his bottom lip trembled. "If you want anything the food to your right and there's some valuables to your left sopleasedon'thurtme!" ending his words in shrieking fear, he ducked down with paws covering his eyes.

Travelling with Mastoff he was always in a horrid predicament that laced trouble in every path they traveled. It eventually tied a knot once arriving in this city; most alleycats knew them and when he tried to have a normal life it always fumble down-hill. "L..Listen, if this has to do with Mastoff- I am no longer with him! Go after him instead I beg you."

Rook
__________

The continued terror expressed by the other feline calmed Rook's own nerves and assured him that there was no threat present in this ghostly-looking entity. Of course, he claimed not to be a ghost but whether or not a ghost would admit to being such a thing was unknown to him. He had to stifle a laugh as the tom fell through a floorboard of the stairs, however, he didn't move forward to help. Rook recognized that advancing would only startle this cat further. The black and white body shifted only slightly in an attempt to make himself look smaller - unassuming.

"I... I don't mean you any harm. I don't want your.. things." he replied gently,"I don't- know who this Mastoff is, I'm afraid. Or anyone associated, as far as I'm away."

The white tom's high-pitch whimpers made a frozen halt with an ear flick of the loner's words. Casper slowly moved his paws to reveal his grey eyes flooded with dread and seeping agitation at the gladden laughter. How rude, he thought along in a 'hmph' he made out loud. "No harm? Heh..haha, HAHAAHA," belting out a bitter cackle at his devious words. It felt like his chest was going to cave in! How ridiculous! Does he really want him to just simply believe in his words? Sudden trust? Heck.no. "Ha..ah, okay okay. You can quit the act okay? Who doesn't know Mastoff? And you..you want nothing from me..? Hogwash!" he shouted. Casper hesitantly stood up properly on all fours and took a few steps forward, skidding away to the right into another room. Dirty broken tiles scattered everywhere he danced around until reaching a table where he piled up his food. Grabbing the biggest prey he'd caught today, which is a fat rat, he plucked out and carried it back to the rogue. Dropping it down in front of his paws without stopping heading straight over to the next room. Stunk of heavy mildew on some of the twoleg's plush nests, there was a certain green one that's ripped to shreds exposing it's skeleton frame. Casper went head first inside of it and popped his head out like a rabbit coming out of it's hole with a bunch of herbs and shiny twoleg strings. He ran back to the same spot, throwing it front of the loner with a light pant. "Is this what you want? You can take it just not my head " Pointing with his paw he called out the weird objects and food in front of them. "That's my big rat I caught today, these are some herbs, freshest out of the bunch and I know you damn rogues like shiny things. Take it all!" Another alarming scent flooded in, smells like...another cat?! "Dear god. You brought of your homies have you? Just raid the whole place then! Go on!

Re: ghost by the window [open]

It was a chilly morning no doubt! The sun was out and smiling brightly to warm the face of the earth but did little against the frozen slush that coated the ground in a untouched blanket. The street for the most part was abandoned, fresh and clean of any car tracks up and down it. A few scampering paw prints of hares and something fowl sitting off to the side in a sealed black bag. Fig found herself basically bouncing down the sidewalk. The cold didn’t much bother the Scottish fold, in fact she quite liked it! Most adventures she took on the colder days ensured nobody was out wandering to interrupt. However she didn’t mind company nonetheless.

Houses started to thin out as she padded along the clean sidewalk, passing empty lot after empty lot until the lines that divided them was no longer visible. “Well that’s peculiar” a house stood alone amongst the mess of human garbage left on empty land. How had she never noted this before? It’s white paint peeling off the sides while the windows seemed to crookedly tilt with the weight of the house on them. However uninviting it appeared she couldn’t pass up an opportunity to explore, it was too enticing to just pass by. With a smile tugging at her lips the she cat burst into a small trot. Heading up the uncut lawn and up the cracked cement pathway leading to the old frame. a tail! I saw a tail! A little black and white tail? Where’d it go? Where did it come from?! oh man.. it would be a shame if this was somebody’s home. Their humans were awful messy if that was the case. No matter.. I should still investigate the doors wide open! Padding towards the old creaky steps and bounding across the small wrap around deck a woeful sight was revealed to her.

A black and white cat stood anxiously by the front entrance and what was that.. a white cat in a pile of wood? Oh my the stairs must’ve collapsed! “What’s going on here?! You ok?” She spoke to soon.. or perhaps too quietly. The white cat was dashing off already disappearing into a room off to the side of the rickety stairs. With a frown at being ignored she took a step into the house already feeling the change of air and the scents that bombarded her nose. She didn’t seem bothered by either frightened cat- or perhaps she just didn’t notice both of them were as nervous as they were. “Hi! I’m Fig- did you fall through the stairs? My my that’s a big rat! Oh.. hi!” Her brain was firing faster then her words could come out.

Rook
__________

Startled by the tom's erratic behavior, Rook couldn't help but take a step back. The growing pile of things was off-putting, to say the least. He gently pushed it away with a single paw,"No, I- uh. I'm not terribly familiar with the area or its residents. I don't usually... I don't tend to stay in one place for long. I don't want-... I'm not here to take anything from you."

He sighed, glancing around the room quickly. This cat was interesting but seemingly a lost cause. He wasn't quite sure if it was worth the effort to try and gain his trust. Some cats just weren't worth the time. He opened his mouth, either to try and introduce himself or make an excuse for a quick exit - he hadn't quite decided yet, but quickly snapped it shut as the white tom spoke up again. He, too, caught the scent of the other felines and his body stiffened as Fig appeared at the doorway. Perhaps it was time to go.

"I'm afraid these aren't felines of my acquaintance." he meowed, taking a step away from Casper and Fig each.

He watched him push the goods away and tipped his head. " Place to place?" actually listening to his words the tom's body relaxed a bit. "Oh, you're a traveler. How stupid of me," Though, new faces kept popping up which left an overlapping of shock across his face. The last cat who popped out of nowhere whispering left him completely stunned. Observing them quietly, they didn't seem like street thugs ..nevertheless, appearances can be deceiving.

Okay, so there's strange cats in my home. I've always wanted to meet new cats but this is embarrassing! First impression was practically him dashing around like a mad mouse- ugh.. Casper honestly wanted to smack his head against the wall. "Uh..," trying to find a way to break the sudden silence. "To..to answer your questions. I am not a ghost nor there is any around here. And, I'm quite alright. I-I'm sorry, this is the first time in a while meeting new cats." Looking at the first loner, grey eyes darkened in guilt and embarrassment. " I thought you were a hoodlum, I apologize." Staring at each of them he wondered. "..Are you all travelers? - Oh! My name is Casper. I live in this old, lopsided..falling apart home haha."

Fig was overwhelmed by the sheer amount of cats that happened to pop up so suddenly- enthused but slightly uncomfortable. The hushed tones of one of the newer toms set her off entirely. Maybe this wasn’t exactly the greatest idea. No. You came here for an adventure! It would be awful rude of you after coming into this white cats home to go scrambling off! mind set on a greeting she stepped aside as she along two others entered.

“My my there are a lot of us!” Fig cooed in her most friendly voice she could muster up. Two angoras! They were certainly a gorgeous pair.. how funny that they happened to be black and white! She gave a flick of her ear. “I’m so sorry to intrude...” she paused “Casper! That’s it.” Would’ve been embarrassing to have forgotten his name so quickly! “It’s quite a lovely home. And you-“ she turned staring down the black and white tom who seemed at unease “what’s your name...” she waited for an answer. “Oh don’t be shy I won’t bite!” She wouldn’t bother with the angoras... they seemed preoccupied with themselves and would get to introductions later. Then she approached Casper bumping heads with the tom as a greeting- a rather blunt greeting at that. Then spinning on her paws she set out for the second tom extending her neck forward to gently bump foreheads. It might’ve been a weird custom- however she didn’t much care for their discomfort. Instead she was interested in exploring the place.

Axel, Fig, Ge-..genieveve? Geniv- nevermind, there's so many new faces here. "Welcome to my home. I'm happy to have friendly guests!" He waited quietly to see if the first rogue he'd met would introduce himself..thoughhh, it might be unlikely due to his bad impression. The skittish white tom was a bit taken back at Fig's odd greeting but didn't step away at all. Instead, he purred happily. She seems sweet. "Thank you, thank you. I'd love to hear more of this ghost thing later- and about yourself, you must have traveled far! And you all must be cold and hungry. Let's all get settled first, yes? Yes, heh." Casper tail tip twitched for them to follow him up the double row staircase, swiveling his head back to make sure every cat was following the pattern of his pawsteps. "Be careful, watch your paws." He lost count of how many stairs he'd fallen through. A long time ago a certain rogue carelessly stomped up the fragile steps and took an unfortunate fall that kind of paralyzed his right leg. Good thing for him, it was one of those rude rogues that wanted to steal. The bad? Well, there's a mess to clean. Long leaping passed broken, lifted wood maneuvering around onto the railing and onto the final step they made it to the second floor. "Let me give you a tour around the place. It's old and damaged but has it's perks! Let's see.." The hallway was narrow and straight like an old canal dressed in pressed birch wood with three dust caked up doors one side, the other another three set of doors expect two of them was halfy torn down. Wind swept through the shaky building making the wood creak and echo as if it's aware of the history within it's splintering walls. Casper humming probably didn't make it better enhancing the creepiness level. He stride over to the first room with it's torn door exposing a once pretty checker tile floor, a large bowl thing (he doesn't know what it is) and a smaller one that stood taller in porcelain white. "This is the water station. You can get your water from here- look!" Doing a little sway of his bottom before leaping up, he balanced carefully and extended his paw to push n pull on a strange handle. It took him a few seconds to fiddle with it eventually turning the strange contraption that screeched horridly until water jutted out from the pipe. "There we go! Anyone thirsty? It's cold and taste fresh."

Rook
__________

Rook felt as overwhelmed as this.. Casper seemed to be. However, now that the fluffy white tom seemed to be calming down a bit he was much more pleasant. A little less eccentric and all over the place. He glanced around as each of the felines introduced themselves in turn. Casper, Fig, Axel and Gen- that one would just have to stay Gen.

"My name is Rook." he meowed gently, turning his attention solely to Casper. He would make acquaintance with each other felines in time but for now, Casper was his main point of interest. He appreciated the welcome and carefully followed up the stairs - making sure he was the first behind him. Parts of this house were... claustrophobic to the small black loner. His yellow eyes darted around - tracing the walls, the peeling paint and old decor. Fresh air would be nice. This twoleg device Casper showed them startled Rook and he couldn't help but jump slightly as it came to life.

It's been moons since he has last seen Mastoff. Moons too many to count. He tried countering why should he care for such a cold vermin like him but it didn't lay his thoughts to rest. Starting from checking the back door and flushing out the garden every now and then turned into a ritual for him. Until...one day the white rogue stopped. Reality coiled around his heart saying that the old tom will never come back. He is gone forever.
Cruel.
The only word that replayed in his head every time he thought about him. Like puzzle connecting two pieces together finally broke off and it made him feel incomplete. Worthless. The list of words can go on and on.

Just like life, Casper grew older, larger, his thoughts mustered in fear, stubbornness, and anger. He didn't know why. Things started to annoy him.. like a plank falling down from ceilings, the breeze whispering through the walls. Even the simplest of things like new rain, warmth, light comes at a gentle pace on Spring's arrival.

Less and less visitors passed by and with nothing to do the rogue heavily slept upon a pile of junk. His snores echoed loudly, haunting the dilapidated house.
