wanderings (open<3)
(open for anyone who wants to stumble across Smolder’s path :) ) high in the loft of an old barn, the ginger form of a cat lay snoozing. His long fur prickled with stalks and his pas aches from walking, but Smolder barely noticed. This was the first chance he’d had to catch a rest in a place that seemed totally safe in a while- and he reveled in it. The young tom stretched his soft paws in front of him, flexing his claws to watch them through slitted golden eyes. They were much sharper now than they’d been in a while; he’d started sharpening them every chance he got after a close encounter with a loose dog. Luckily it was barely larger than him and it’s two legs were nearby, but the fright had left him shaking for a whole night. Smolder could see through a crack in the wood of the barn that the sun was rising high. It was time to get moving again. The tom groaned and flopped to his paws, stretching luxuriously; he wouldn’t let another day of walking ruin his happy mood from his night of good sleep. Besides, he was the one who had decided to travel and explore. Smolder yawned and flicked his tail cheerfully before hopping down from the hay loft to one of the stacks below, eventually making his way to the floor. The young tom sauntered into the chilly sunlight, fluffing up his long fur reflexively. He hoped to meet someone interesting on his journey today like he had a few sunrises early. That cat had told him of exactly what he wanted to hear- the clans. The loner hadn’t known much, but Smolder was simply glad to have proof that they really existed. Not that he didn’t trust his mother, but he had been awfully young when she’d told him the stories; he wasn’t sure he could trust himself! But now he knew that the clans really existed and a thrill shot through his heart. He must be getting closer! The clans were his end goal...but he still intended to enjoy the journey on the way. With all these things swirling through his mind, Smolder shook out his fluffed up coat to dislodge some of the hay and set out along the fence that marked the edge of this twoleg’s territory, keeping an eye out for dogs, cats, and any signs that he was headed in the right direction. |
Re: wanderings (open<3)
( @The Cannibal ) Smolder had paused in a clump of bracken to rest his paws and snack on a small mouse that had practically run straight into his claws. After slowly stretching each limb and cleaning away the last scraps of mouse, Smolder pulled himself to his paws and stepped back onto the ragged dirt path he’d been following in the hopes that it would lead somewhere. His day had been boring so far, but Smolder shrugged it off and told himself to be thankful that he hadn’t run into any trouble. Then again, he couldn’t help feeling that running into other cats would be a sign that he was on the right path. Deep in thoughts about his destination and worry about whether he was simply wandering about in circles, Smolder didn’t notice the scent of other cats when the wind changed. He had had no formal training, after all, and it wasn’t uncommon to smell cats around here. With real training, like the one he sought with the clans, Smolder would have been able to discern the difference between the stale cat smell that often drifted past and the sudden onslaught of fresh scent before it was too late. As it was, he didn’t realize he wasn’t alone until he heard the pawsteps behind him. Smolder spun around only to meet the sneer of a much taller, much more muscular rogue with two of his friends behind him. Smolder’s ears pinned themselves to his head and his fur spiked. There was no way he could fight these cats or even defend himself; he had one choice. The ginger tom threw himself to the side and spun to face the way he’d been going, sprinting like a golden stream down the path with his eyes tearing one way and the other in desperate search for a place to hide. The thunder of pawsteps behind him drowned out his own pounding heart and Smolder could feel panic clawing it’s way through him. He needed to calm down. He needed to think. The young cat focused on relaxing, trying to clear his mind and think his next actions through. Suddenly, Smolder came up short, tumbling paws over tail into the dust in a painful sprawl. He blinked shock and pain out of his golden eyes, assessing his limbs and searching for what had stopped him so suddenly at the same time. Another rogue, smaller than the others but still frightening, snarled down at him from where he’d been crouching and waiting to throw Smolder to the side. The young loner struggled to his paws, limping backward a few pawsteps until he heard the snarls behind him as well. Heart sinking, Smolder tried his best to swallow his fear and draw himself up to seem big but he was much younger and smaller than the cats that surrounded him. All he could do was brace himself and search for a way out. |

{Hope y'all don't mind if I join in :3}
A bigger figure came sprinting to the rescue, his claws unsheathed, fur bristling, and his broad gray face scrunched up in anger. Lucky quickly threw himself at the biggest one out of the group spitting and hissing in anger. His opponent was strong, yes, but he new more skill then this loner I guess being an ex-clan cat as it perks! Lucky chuckled to himself, loosing his grip he was thrown off, tumbling. Lucky's mind was racing with how to approach his next move, settling on a pounce and going for the eyes, he got up crouched as low as he could, then sprang up off of his powerful haunches front paws stretched out wide ready to claw this rouges eyes out! Of course he missed, great! Now what was he going to do?! Flashing the young ginger loner a quick look he quickly asked "Hey kid! Do you know how to fight or not?!" @Beau @The Cannibal |
Re: wanderings (open<3)
@Beau @Wolfie Hannibal seemed to have disappeared off the radar of the clans, going who knows where and doing who knows what. Few had seen him in moons and even fewer had interacted with the strange monster of a cat. And yet it seems he finds the best time to find others. There seemed to be a small gathering of cats, 5 if he counted the scents correctly. All downwind of him. Slowly the dark tom edged closer, the tip of his tail flicking slowly back and forth, listening to what was going on. 'Troublesome rogues.' He thought to himself, edging ever closer to the congregation. They were targeting a younger cat. He needed to stretch, he needed to get back into the swing of things because he had plans. He hadn't killed in a few weeks. Without a single word, or hint that he was there, Hannibal went speeding through the undergrowth, fast and swift as a shadow before going for a slash that would end up causing a spray of arterial blood if it landed. |
Re: wanderings (open<3)
@Wolfie @The Cannibal Smolder blinked in surprise as a new cat appeared out of nowhere and jumped into the fray. It took him all of a second to realize this cat wasn’t interested in eating him for lunch or whatever it was the others wanted from him but the split second of fear that another cat was there to attack him felt like a lifetime. Smolder was left speechless as the bigger cat began to battle the rogues for him and all he could do was stare dumbly and vaguely wonder if this was a clan cat. Snap out of it! he yowled at himself in his brain, now is most definitely not the time to feed your clan addiction! He shook himself and regained the ability to move just in time to both hear his new ally ask after his ability to fight- rightly so, a voice wheedled in his head- and to duck the claws that flew at him. He unsheathed his own freshly sharpened claws and leapt before his attacker could right herself. His outstretched claws connected with her shoulder and he felt them rend her skin. The rogue let out a hiss of pain and Smolder skidded clumsily to a stop a few taillengths away, huffing; he turned his attention to his helper and offered a nod and a grin in answer. The young tom returned to fighting the rogue- who was bleeding and furious- but he began to falter beneath her barrage of blows. Smolder was for the most part untrained and he and his mysterious benefactor were still outnumbered. Before long, a second rogue had descended on him and Smolder’s heart sank. There was no way he could hold off two cats at once when he’d been struggling just to battle the one. Proving his unspoken fear, the two rogues easily pinned him and began to shred through ginger fur and tender pink skin. Smolder bit back a yowl and thrust upward to dislodge the cat stop him only for the second to send him flying into the base of a nearby tree. Smolder has just deliriously lifted his head when he saw a streak of fur plow into one of the attackers; he thought he was imagining it at first, but no- there was a new cat in the fight and he was (thank the stars) on Smolder’s side. The ginger breathed a sigh of relief, pulled himself painfully from the root he lay on, and faced his original attacker- huffing heavily, but snarling like a warrior. |
Re: wanderings (open<3)
@Beau @Wolfie It seemed the rogue wasn't expecting Hannibal either, and as easy as a knife through butter did Hannibal's claws cut the rogue's throat, splattering the blood on the ground and causing the cat to stumble forward, coughing and choking, inhaling its own blood into its lungs. Very briefly he'd watch the cat stumble forward before they collapsed on the ground, breathing weakly, blood pooling around it, before he would turn his attention to the other rogue. The one assaulting Smolder. It seemed more focused on him. Surging forward, he slashed heavily at the cats upper thigh, aiming to cripple him. And as the rogue inevitably turned to try and strike back at him in pain, Hannibal lightly stepped back. There wasn't any form of emotion on his face, just cold hard calculation. In fact, he didn't seem to even focus on Smolder anymore. His query was with the rogue for now. He'd worry about the other cats later. |
Re: wanderings (open<3)
@Wolfie @The Cannibal Smolder was too focused on the cat before him to notice the sudden spray of blood at first, but he did notice the crimson drops that smacked into his muzzle and clung to the pale ginger fur that grew there. He took his eyes away from the rogue for merely a moment to see the other rogue convulsing on the ground, bleeding heavily from his throat. Smolder’s own throat convulsed in a gulp and he blinked in shock, but a growl from the other rogue stole back his attention and Smolder’s talent for handling emergencies took over. His subconscious carefully stored the image of the dying rogue away in the depths of his mind and slowed his heart rate, while Smolder consciously focused on battling. His eyes were like hawks’ on the ugly rogue before him and he was prepared when his opponent lunged. Smolder shrunk in on himself at the last second and the rogue skidded over the smal form of the 6 moon old cat. Exhilarated by the events of the battle, Smolder tried a move he’d never heard of or attempted before, twisting to take his claws down his opponent’s belly-exposed only to him. Smolder waited too long to start and was only able to slash the latter half of the rogues body, but it injured his opponent enough that the bigger cat careened directly into the spot where the other cat was waiting. Smolder watched breathlessly as Hannibal crippled the rogue, feeling a stir of satisfaction mixed with the twisting feeling of watching serious injuries. He wasn’t sure that it was necessary to kill and cripple the rogues, but he was far too thankful for the other cats ‘ help to criticize either of them. “Nicely done!” He called to Hannibal in a breathless voice, surveying the area around them rather than focusing on his wounds- which were beginning to throb. |
Re: wanderings (open<3)
@Beau @Wolfie It was a bit of a shame, wasn't it? Such a waste of life, almost a waste of energy to deal with these cats. But Hannibal liked to think he had reason enough to maim and kill them, it wasn't senseless. He didn't like senseless killing, killing just to kill. There had to be a point behind it. And though it was a loose point, he did have a point behind his actions. What that point was, was a mystery. Within moments the fight seemed to be done, at least one rogue dead, another clawing their way away with a lame leg, likely to get picked off by a fox or something else, and whoever was left went running for fear of what might happen to them if they stuck around. Very briefly the tom would give his coat a few licks, cleaning off whatever blood spatter might have ruined his otherwise nicely groomed pelt. And now was time to put on his act, a mask he liked to use when meeting new cats to study. A friendly face. With moons of practice, it looked real. Smiling, he'd dip his head. "Thank you, sorry it had to get so messy. They looked like they were about to tear you to shreds. And it looks like they partially succeeded, you might want to clean those wounds." His gaze would flicker to the dead body. He would come back for that later. "Would you like me to move it? I know most don't particularly like looking at a corpse unless it's food." |

Re: wanderings (open<3)
( @The Cannibal @Wolfie ) Smolder laugher wryly at Hannibal’s observation and nodded, “feels like they did too.” He knew the other cat was right in suggesting he start taking care of the wounds and sat down to start, wincing with each movement. The young tom had a chance to think now as he rasped his tongue over the swollen pink flesh that was starting to ooze slower. He felt physically and mentally drained, and couldn’t resist hunching over in fatigue while he licked away the blood and dirt that colored his ginger pelt. Hannibal’s question took him by surprise, though, and he paused to look at the tom thoughtfully. Smolder had to admit, it was tempting; he didn’t particularly enjoy seeing death nor the remains. In fact, he surely would dream about it for moons and if it weren’t for the last tendrils of shock still wrapping g around his brain he might have thrown up. Yet, this cat had lost his life so that Smolder could keep his own and the young tom felt that he had to honor that. If he was capable of being involved in the death of another, justified or not, he should be able to deal with the aftermath. Flicking his golden eyes from the dead cat back to Hannibal, Smolder gave a determined shake of his head, “No, that’s alright. He may have attacked me, but I don’t believe he deserves to be tossed aside like rotten prey. I don’t have the strength to bury him right now, though, so he can stay where he is for now. A cat has to be able to handle the consequences of his actions, right?” Smolder hoped that Hannibal would understand that, while the young tom hadn’t killed the cat himself, he was partly responsible for his death- the same as the rogue was responsible for his own death by going out of his way to attack a stranger. Returning to grooming away the unsightly red and brown splotches, Smolder turned his attention to the other cat who’d come to his rescue, “how are you doing?” Then he addresses both and nodded his head to them, “My name’s Smolder. Thank you for your assistance.” ( sure @TeamRiverRipple) |
Re: wanderings (open<3)
Lake leaped out from behind some bushes, chasing a butterfly. "Imma getcha!" she squealed, leaping up and wrapping her paws around. Dropping down, she opened her paws to find nothing. "Dangit." she muttered, a sullen look coming across her face. Lifting her nose to scent for the butterfly, she picked up a strange scent. Cat scent. "Friends!" she yelped happily, dashing in the direction of the scent. Leaping out in front of the blood spattered cats, she paused, her eagerness fading. They looked so big. Perhaps it was just her foolish kit mind- but they looked SCARY to her. Backing away, she whispered "Maybe I should j-just leave you guys alone?" @Beau @The Cannibal @Wolfie

Re: wanderings (open<3)
Lucky nodded and quickly dodged his attacker, the tom swiftly swiped at his opponents throat feeling blood drain onto his gray paw. His striking blue eyes cold as ice. He turned his attention to another rouge, he sprang clawing it's side, blood spattering. Lucky landed roughly, the toms ears pricked when he heard a small squeak, he turned to see a small kit! He bared his teeth and flexed his blood covered claws, a low growl forming from his chest @The Cannibal @Beau @TeamRiverRipple

Re: wanderings (open<3)
@The Cannibal @Beau @TeamRiverRipple Listening to Smolder and observing what the young tom did, he began to make mental notes of the behavior. He liked to document personalities, you never knew when you could draw on them in the future. Over the moons he was getting better and better with acting like a 'normal' cat so to speak, much different than his youth. Then again his youth was spent in the Dusk Syndicate, born and raised there, so it wasn't too strange with that bunch of cats. It was when he disbanded did he truly need to begin drawing on the different personalities of the cats around him and learning to put on the masks of emotions that every cat seemed to wear. Otherwise they wouldn't trust you. He still wasn't sure why emotions were so important, but it was better to go along with it so that he could get the information that he wanted, than to try and figure out the bland reasoning. 'That's an interesting choice, he seemed so disturbed by the sight of it. He's compassionate for a cat he didn't know, a cat who attacked him and caused him injury. Or perhaps respectful is the right word. Strange, but intriguing.' Outwardly he showed no signs of his thought process and would merely nod with a continued light smile. "You are quite right." Turning his head as Smolder addressed the other loner, Hannibal instead turned his gaze to the bushes where he heard rustling, the very tip of his tail flicking back and forth. His hollow orange-red gaze focused on the kit as they came crashing out, only to immediately regret their choice. The other loner, Lucky, growled and snarled at the kit, apparently still filled with energy from the battle. Hannibal said nothing, he didn't raise a paw. If Lucky were to kill the kit, he wouldn't stop him, just watch with quiet interest. 'Not a good impression to make.' Blinking, Hannibal recalled back to the personality mask he was supposed to be wearing. "I don't think that one will be causing much harm, it's about ready to jump out of it's skin," he said to Lucky, continuing to smile though his eyes didn't show the lightheartedness that his words conveyed. "Take it easy, treat your wounds. Those ruffians won't be coming back anytime soon." |
Re: wanderings (open<3)
Lake peeked out from under her paw, her eyes still filled with tears. She stared at the toms conversing, and growling at each other. She let out a whimper. She was hungry, lonely, and scared.

Re: wanderings (open<3)
Smolder didn’t notice Hannibal’s internal study of his actions, nor the mask the tom was wearing. He liked the other cat, even if he did seem a little on the odd side; Smolder wasn’t the judgmental type. Besides, it wasn’t like Hannibal was noticeably weird, it was just a tiny question at the back of Smolder’s mind that he couldn’t translate in order to answer. The young tom couldn’t focus on anything for long that wasn’t the burning that cling to his body wherever his blood was trickling out through rent skin. He didn’t even hear the third newcomer until Hannibal spoke up that she wasn’t likely to cause trouble; Smolder finally turned and noticed the hostile positioning of Lucky and the curled up ball of fluff that squeaked under his glare. Technically, Smolder was only a few moons older than the other kit- being only 6 moons old himself- but he had been born of a larger stature and raised on tales of tough warriors whom he dreamed of emulating. He knew what he was up against and could handle it. Lake, on the other paw, was young and scared and Smolder knew he had to protect her for now. “It’s alright,”he called to her softly, though weariness tinged his voice, ”none of us will hurt you.” The tom-kit breathed a sigh of relief at Hannibal’s words and nodded, “you’re right. Right now the biggest issue is taking care of our wounds. Thanks again, both of you, for helping me. I wouldn’t have made it out alive without you.” He hissed as he jerked his left shoulder the wrong way and pain radiated from it. Now that the shock was wearing off, Smolder was beginning to realize that every little moment hurt tremendously in that shoulder. ( @The Cannibal / @Wolfie / @TeamRiverRipple ) |
Re: wanderings (open<3)
The tom stared at the black loner his blue eyes blank with no form of emotion. Lucky turned to face the kit and stepped forward, his blood covered paws leaving pawprints as he walked, a grin formed on his face, menacing yes, he was trying to scare the little brat off! He unsheathed his claws and launched himself at the kit growling and spitting inraged @The Cannibal @Beau @TeamRiverRipple

Re: wanderings (open<3)
@Beau @TeamRiverRipple @Wolfie "Settle down stranger, that kit is not a threat. It is fine right where it is," Hannibal said with a warning note in his voice, mentally assessing the situation. A few moments ago he would have let Lucky kill the kit and passed it off as 'the heat of battle', but now the tom, for some reason, was still going after it. He didn't care about the kit's well being, if it died, it died, however he was also trying to play a personality right now. A "good" cat that "saved" the young tom Smolder from danger. Lucky was an outlier, a random occurrence in his goal. His act was for Smolder, not Lucky. And to appear "good" he would need to defend the defenseless kit. "We don't need any more trouble, do we?" Hannibal asked, his fiery gaze focused solely on the tom that was being overly aggressive. He didn't know the cat, he didn't know any of them, but he was only interested in learning about Smolder. The cat seemed more interesting than the mindless brute that was trying to scare a kit. The tip of his tail flicked slowly back and forth as he waited for Lucky to either back down or do something and give him a reason to spill more blood. |
Re: wanderings (open<3)
Lake watched as the toms discussed her, their gazes fixed on one another. They act as if I'm going to stay after what just happened. She crept around the toms, her paw steps quiet and controlled. She was perfect at stealth; it was what had kept her alive this long. Whenever her mother had been in a terrible mood about her father again, stealth was the only way she could avoid getting hurt. Poor Sheep..... Sheep had been the runt. Her mother had always hated him, calling him "sickly" and "weak". Only Lake and Feather had tried to help him. He had died. When Lake tried to tell her mother, to see if she would care, she had gotten a scratch over her eye. At least Feather was okay, in her nice kittypet home. Lake didn't want that kind of life though, even when she had been offered to take it. So, a few nights ago, she had escaped from her mothers "care". She had been surviving off of kittypet food set outside by the Twolegs ever since.
Lake sneaked around a corner, hoping no one saw her. She headed behind a tree, with moss growing by it's roots. This would be a nice spot to shelter... She curled up in a small ball, her eyes closing. I hope those scary cats don't find me..... @Wolfie @The Cannibal @Beau |
Re: wanderings (open<3)
( sorry, totally forgot to respond!) Smolder had been gingerly cleaning his wounds when the slowly building tension caught his attention enough that he had to stop. “No, we don’t want any more trouble.” He agreed, sweeping to his feet and planting himself directly between Lucky and the bush that the younger kit had run into. “Let her stay if she wants. I doubt she can do anything to any of us. Are you alright in there?” Smolder shot the last question over his shoulder, keeping his eyes firmly planted on Lucky. The young tom appreciated Hannibal’s drive to keep the peace, Smolder could relate. He saw no need to intimidate the younger cat, but the battle had ended long enough ago for him to be fairly sure that Lucky wasn’t just acting on latent adrenaline. ”Everybody calm?” He wanted to move on from this drama and find somewhere to curl up for the time being before starting his journey again. Come to think of it, maybe one of these cats had head of the clans. He made a mental note to ask Hannibal if he knew anything of them. @The Cannibal // @Wolfie // @TeamRiverRipple |
