Shadowkit, dragged away from the pain and wrapped in Cedarsong's fluffy, downy fur, took a deep breath, forcing himself to calm down. Mother was here with him. She would protect him from the pain. Sniffling, the young, blind tom curled up tightly in the queen's embrace. It didn't matter what he heard or smelled - Mother would keep him safe. That was what he could rely on - who he could rely on.

Blinking open his eyes in vain, as if the darkness would flee his vision, Shadowkit whispered, "Th-Thank you..." There was a simple truth the tom clung to as the world crashed down around him: it didn't matter how broken he felt - how scared the world made him - the mistakes he'd made. He'd lost one mother, but he'd found another. That was what filled Shadowkit now - the love of a kit to his true mother - and he wasn't sure, but he thought Cedarsong might love him too.
