"A moment of weakness? You and I both know that's not the truth. I'm not going to tell anyone if you tell me. No one even knows anything about the kits after all. As far as they know, they're orphans that I decided to raise." He made sure to whisper the last part. Even though there were no cats around, he wanted to be cautious. He wanted to know why the tom would go over. Surely it can't be because he's trying to be nice. That's the last thing the tom would try to do.

A warm feeling washed over Elmshadow and, unconsciously, a small smile pulled at the corners of his mouth. He cleared his throat.
"Of course she is."
He was quiet a moment, contemplating his answer carefully. He still couldn't exactly put into words, even to himself, why he'd chosen to approach Batsong and he didn't want to think about it long enough to start forming the words; something inside him made him feel that he wouldn't like the answer. But what to tell this nosy beaver. He shrugged and answered candidly,
"I don't really know. I guess maybe I was just bored and wanted somebody to talk to."
