Re: Windswept Plains
Leaving Eldersky alone with the kits made Fernpaw antsy, but he knew it needed to be done. She wouldn't be going far after giving birth so soon, and they needed food .. Mostly for her.
There was a chill in the air that made him shiver as he trudged through the snow, unsure of where to begin. Briefly he had gone hunting with Owltalon, a lifetime ago, but that was rabbits in green-leaf and this ....
Well, they weren't in WindClan anymore. He didn't know where he was, only that it was a snowy field with little in sight. Fernpaw sighed softly to himself, watching the breath cloud dissipate before his eyes. It was a blessing in disguise when the flutter of wings caught his attention. A bird had landed nearby, chosing a nearly melted patch of snow to peck at the ground. His mouth watered at the sight - this was his chance! And though he hadn't a clue on what to do, it couldn't be too different from rabbits, right? (Wrong.)
Fernpaw lowered himself into a crouch, feeling clumsy from the change in position, and did his best to creep toward the bird. His steps were too heavy, the snow too brittle beneath his paws as it crunched with nearly every movement. Within a heartbeat the bird was launching itself back into the air, and in his desperation Fernpaw lurched forward in pursuit.
He hit the ground with a thud, birdless, and made a few eager swipes at the air as if to knock it from the sky. But the bird was long gone, and he was alone with only a loose feather his prize. "Oh, shoot!"
What was he going to do now??
