Perhaps he was just unnerved by the cats in the clearing, I've seen cats do similar things in that sort of situation, though I can't say I've had one have a look of extreme terror cross their face in such a predicament, there wasn't even another cat near him. As he followed the scent trail that the other cat left behind, he pondered as to what this cats reasoning was, what was making him tick. Surely it wasn't because of me, he hadn't even taken notice to my staring so it has to be something more.
The husk of a tom was hardly effected by the cold, he was aware that it nipped at the skin beneath his relatively short pelt, but it didn't change his demeanor or even occur in his thoughts.
I suppose the best way to answer my question is to ask the very cat themselves. Having decided on his solution, Hannibal decided to quit his quiet approach and become less careful of his pawsteps, allowing them to make soft crunching noises so that the other could hear his approach so that he wouldn't freak him out. He's found that other cats are less willing to answer questions if you frighten them.

"Greetings." A particular infamous voice meowed out, the figure of Hannibal emerging casually from behind Jamie, his face a blank stony mask. "Enjoying a walk in the territory are you?" Questioned the dark tom, tilting his head with his gaze fully focused on the other, his ears attuned and ready to dissect everything that this tom had to offer.

Jamie looked genuinely startled at the voice that rang out in the dead silence, and he quickly recognized it as none other than Hannibal's. He turned around, his eyes wide, as his heart began to pound in his chest. He was at war with himself, you see.
This cat was rumored to be cannibalistic, and murderous, but he was rumored to be cannibalistic and murderous. There was little evidence that he was, and the tom didn't seem to be in a hurry to cut Jamie's throat. in fact, he seemed particularly friendly. And the more Jamie thought about it, the less worried he became.
I must've looked pretty odd, suddenly looking horrified like that. Any cat would follow to see why, I suppose. Jamie thought, in an effort to comfort his terror.
"Hello," he meowed in the most polite way possible, not wanting to show his fear too much. At Hannibal's second comment, Jamie nodded. "Yes, it's nice out here during leaf-bare. Nice and quiet and peaceful, you know?" Jamie commented.
He kept telling himself that this was just another cat, and it would be rather hypocritical for him to judge this cat based on rumors he'd heard from rather untrustworthy cats.
"It's nice to meet you," he said, the usual innocence and naive tone creeping back to his voice. "I'm Jamie," he introduced in a friendly manor, his tail curling around his paws to warm himself a tad bit.
