the scrawny tortoiseshell kitten looked up as two cats approached her. The first Berry was kind and warm. Like a mother was. Not that Firefly would know remotely how a mother was, considering she never met hers.

Before she could answer, the second Berry's monotone question made Fireflykit look up. The stuff she said was sweet, but her voice was emotionless. She smiled at both cats, hoping her voice was more convincing than she felt. "Oh, I'm fine. I just... had a bad dream that keeps bothering me." She tried not to lie, so she gave the closest thing to the truth that she was comfortable with. Waking up to the medicine cat crushing the life out of a kit was a bad dream, the only difference was that it was a dream she could wake up from. "How are you guys?" Her gold eyes shimmered with sincerity. She really wanted to know.

It was just also a very good way to change the subject.
