the more the strangely malicious she-cat spoke, the more the black tom adjusted himself to be just slightly between her and the kit. “no, the kit is not mine.” he replied, tail flicking slightly. even yet, as calm and as cool as night itself, he spoke. “no harm intended, but i believe you need to learn some manners. most cats wouldn’t take to kindly to being threatened.” he said, not unkindly, but the edge to his tone was definite. not hostile, but warning. if she tried anything, he would not let it go unpunished.

thankfully, it wouldn’t come to that. he heard more pawsteps approaching, and a scent not unlike the kit’s caught on the breeze. he tilted his head upwards and glanced back a bit, and watched as the grass parted and a molly, heavy with kits, entered the small circle of cats. he curled his tail around his flank as she took to shielding the kit, quite glad that he no longer had the responsibility of protecting the small kitten from danger.

“greetings, ma’am,” it wasn’t hard to tell that this tall, dark tom was not from around here. his, low, calm voice was thick with an accent unlike any clanner or loner from these parts. “i’m quite glad you’ve come, i was worried i’d have to go and find the kit’s parents myself, and i know no one would be too happy seeing a strange, scarred tomcat with their kit.” he mused, a faint smile playing on his muzzle. he did not want to seem unkind or hostile, as he wasn’t either of those things. plus, a positive relationship with the local groups could make his brief stay a lot easier. his gaze flickered to the kit’s outburst, and faint amusement crossed his face. he made a mental note not to cross whatever group this little one was from if they were all just as fiery.
