After Aster closed the trapdoor, they shot downstairs, and skidded to a halt beside Master Fortune.
Fortune's lip twitched in annoyance, and he crossed his arms. Who did this fleabag think he was, asking permission to search his home? The dog was silent for a moment, not glancing back when he heard his apprentice rush behind him. All Fortune was thinking about was how annoying this weirdo was. "If somebody was on my property, I'd know." He turned to face Aster, glare boring into the scrawny cat. "Is anybody here that I don't know about?" He barked. "N-no sir." Fortune whipped back to face Darkwood, expecting him to leave.

Darkwood sucked his teeth.
"Very well, sir," he said, and leering at the apprentice.
"Thank you, for your time." His slipper his hat low over his forehead, then turned and walked away, whistling as he pocked random bushes with his cane. He didn't believe one of them. Someone had been lying, he was sure of it. He would keep this house in mind.
I gaze around the room. It has a safe aura up here. I hear Aster leaving, and prick my ears to try and pick out the conversation. My nose twitches. Then the door closes and Darkwood is gone. I've done it. I have escaped him! I sag to the ground in relief and close my eyes.
