Salamanderkit deflates a bit to hear that they're not going to do real war stuff, just 'the basics'. Whatever that means. She's sucking her teeth and rolling her eyes in disappointment before recalling the brief lesson she'd picked up from Splashleap. Fighting means a lot of thinking and planning, and sometimes making your paws do different things at the same time. The word she's thinking of, but doesn't really know, is coordination. And while she only knows the concept and not the term, Salamanderkit knows she's not very good at that thing. Or the planning aspect. Or...well, any of it. Besides being big and daring and strong and awesome, of course—she was born knowing that one.

So maybe 'the basics' means knowing how to do that bothersome, tricky, thinking-and-planning part. Or maybe knowing 'the basics' will make that stuff easier somehow. A kitten can hope.

Resolving to hope and not mope, Salamanderkit fixes her face and comes out of that temporary disappointment looking significantly less glum. This will be good. This will be fun.

"Are we all gonna get to hit each other?" She asks, watching with a wicked glint in her eye as the group of defense-class kittens steadily starts to pack together. Perhaps Salamanderkit wants a reason to punch a denmate. Not that she typically ever needs a reason, but...well, a reason would be a nice change of pace.
