There was no more time to think as Wolfhive lunged at her. Mallowpaw sidestepped and stuck a paw out in front of him so he would hopefully trip. There was a chance he might leap over it, but it seemed like the best move to use. The most natural, too.

Wolfhive knew she'd sidestep, but didn't correct his leap - in part, he wanted her to see how it'd play out successfully. In the future, he'd give her an example of it being evaded so she could prepare for it.
He stumbled over it, not quite falling but it did trip him up and delay his response. Once he had his balance back, he twisted on his paws to (lightly) aim a blow toward her face.
