He couldn't hide the small smile that came from the older cat's compliment. He'd always placed great value on the opinion of his seniors, thus the pride that came with prasie never seemed to change. His confidence had been knocked lately, but perhaps, with work, he was gaining it back. "I certainly wouldn't be thrilled to be up agaisnt you, either," he stood up, shaking his paws off. Listening to her explanation of the river. "Hah - I think I need it." He grinned, wiping the mud from his face with a smirk. Few things amused him, but something about that did. "Thanks Fernsmoke, we should do this again sometime." He gave her a polite flick of his tail, then he was off to the river.

Smokefern snorted softly at Newtbelly's compliment, but didn't refute it. She started padding over to where she knew a stream would be. Sure, she could leave Newtbelly to it, but it felt rude to just leave after that. Plus, dipping her paws in water would make them easier to clean off.
