rookfire had wandered off, only to realise that three rabbits (or squirrels) would probably be too much to eat, even if he hadnt yet eaten. with a grumble he stopped to ponder his options. if one of them didnt catch anything they'd have a problem. alright he was catching something as well, if they ended up with three pieces of prey he wouldnt touch his.

the enforcer was experienced enough to not take a horribly long time to track down a squirrel, now he was crouched near a brush, silver eyes focussed on the deep red squirrel half covered by tall grass. while it obscured his sight, the squirrel would have a harder time spotting him as well. with a well timed leap, he closed the distance between them, delivering a killing bite with precicion.

he returned at the same time the other two did, wasting no time to drop his squirrel. at least one of them had something, that was enough.

"alright. roll your prey into its back. you see the hind legs? make a shallow cut all the way around each leg, keep it relatively high on the leg so its easier to seperate later. he began, unsheathing his claws to first show the two high high the cut had to be and then cutting through skin and hide, leaving the flesh beneath unharmed.

"once that is done, repeat the same on the front limbs. now you make a long cut down the inside of the hind leg and around the throat. all the way around" rookfire instructed, cutting around the squirrels throat without puncturing any blood vessels underneath. the first time he had flayed anything, with mistlewhisker, his cuts had been ragged and too deep, resulting in a partially stained pelt, but he had had a bit of practice since then and also learned to control his strength a bit better.

"lastly, a long, straight cut down the rabbits front and you'll be able to pull the hide off with relative ease" now that he had worked on his prey as well he'd have to go find someone to eat it back at camp. ugh.

he could share with owlthroat again, the older tom was good company, or try the nursery. was skinned prey too scary for kits?

Ah well fun time was over, it was now time to work. Shadowpaw recollected herself and gave her fur a quick lick down before pulling her rabbit in front of her. She cast a glance at Wisppaw and saw that he got his squirrel ready. Shadowpaw and Wisppaw struggled at the first part to cut the skin and meat correctly both equally cutting some meat with the skin around the legs. Doing this for the first time was hard and both were a little discouraged since there was so little meat around the legs to begin with. [10, 11]

Once they watched Rookfire do the neck and down the middle the two of them started again. With renewed confidence after watching the expert do it, Shadowpaw managed to get a perfect cut around the neck and down the belly, producing a decent pelt. She beamed with pride. Wisppaw followed her suit, he struggled a little bit but did much better after watching her as well. It wasn't as perfect as Shadowpaw but it was alright. Maybe if he grabbed a rabbit it would have been better but he never caught one before. [20, 15]

"So... Should we clean up the pelts? There's some meat around here." Shadowpaw motioned around where the legs had been. "Oh and whats the proper way of drying this? Oh, oh and would this be nice in our mossbeds? Seems like it would be." While Shadowpaw talked, Wisppaw stayed quiet and looked to Rookfire while pondering the questions Shadowpaw asked. He didn't feel like he needed to repeat what she asked.
