Uh oh. Apparently she’d made the wrong decision. Was star clan punishing her? First Goosefury and now Koistream? Rainydawn blushed despite herself, always susceptible to compliments, but the tough voice in her head that kept her safe screamed at her.

Don’t blush! Don’t engage! You feel nothing- if you blush you’ll make yourself feel things! We both know how that turns out!

Ugh. Being emotionless was difficult when she kept putting herself in situations for cats to care about her and for her to care about them. She needed a refresher course on minding her own business!

Rainydawn gave a reserved smile and sat down a little more distant than one would usually.

“Thank you,” she meowed with a polite nod.

Shyly tucking into her vole to avoid speaking, Rainydawn hissed silently at herself. So far, she was behaving according to her self-imposed guidelines. She had to be cool and collected and polite but not overly friendly. Cats wouldn’t think of her in any special way if she was just polite. Friendliness led to affection which led to pain.

Something told her that her politeness wouldn’t deter this friendly looking tom from being kind and affectionate, and her heart twisted. The guarded voice reminded her that rudeness always distanced cats, but Rainydawn hated being mean. Even being cold made her feel bad- but it had to be done. Silently smacking herself, Rainydawn built up her guard once more and hardened her expression. She was ready for war.
