----Warden----
The growling struck Warden like a knife between the ribs and he froze, staring out into the dark until he could stand to look no longer. His paws kicked up dirt and leaves and grass as he took off, racing past the dogs as they erupted from the grass and attacked. He gave neither Petal nor Ada as he ran.
His legs seemed to move on their own, however, and against his better wishes, he followed Eponine. The kit may have been whiny and annoying, but she was just that, a
kit. He couldn't leave her to the dogs, even if they were far away. He passed her with ease when they entered the woods, then turned, and trotted to a stop in front of her. He bent down to nudge her with his nose.
"Come on, kid, stand up. I'll carry you as far as I can until we can rest, all right?'"
Anger was beginning to burn in his chest. At the dogs, of course, for ripping this child's mother away from her, but also at Baptist. This was his fault, all his fault! If they hadn't left the city, they would have been fine, and now they were down two members. Possibly more by the time the dogs were finished. He took a second to glance over Eponine's shoulder, scanning the woods for any sign of the dogs.
