“Don’t get used to it! I’ll never make such an accusation again until I’m old and senile.”

Somewhere in her subconscious, Otterberry had been worried that time and ranks had changed Breezefeather but she stood in front of him now on the other side of a canyon of moons and experiences joking like they did when they were young and inseparable. Adventuring had fed her soul in one way, but the life of constant travel left little room for meaningful connections and she’d grown starved for this. There was something so fulfilling about spending tome with a cat who knew you inside and out and somehow the changes over the moons seemed to melt away with Breezefeather. They were different cats now but knew each other all the same.

Breezefeather’s rumbling laughter prompted unabashed chortles from the longhair herself. Ott could clearly remember the young Breezepaw stolidly refusing to accompany her out of the territory before, of course, accompanying her out of the territory.

“You know, I don’t remember how I convinced you either! Knowing you and your valiant self it was probably just to make sure I didn’t get myself killed out there alone. And hey, I tried to tell them it was my fault but someoneee wouldn’t let me!”

The mature feline before her with his time worn eyes and his responsibility-hardened brow suddenly looked youthful and boisterous as the earnest young apprentice he once was. She smiled warmly to herself as she saw the shift, finding joy in the looseness and easiness of their return to friendship.

“A murder? How intriguing. My dear Breezefeather, murder or not, time with you is quality. Now, tell me more about this mysterious death we are investigating.”

Then came the old quips and Otterberry scowled at him before sticking out her tongue like she had as an apprentice.

“Well only one of us is grey all over, old friend! I will of course lead the way- and we’ll make it their fine. Don’t worry, I’ll take great care to avoid any declines or bumpy paths. Wouldn’t want you slipping and tumbling down a hill- might break one of your frail bones.”

Wrinkling her nose playfully, Otterberry walked slowly to the entrance to lead the way. Of course, there was no way she was remaining that slow! With a wiggle of her brow, the warrior took off, sprinting into the territory and away.
