encounters [private]
it had certainly been a while.
a while since thorn had been able to just sit and ponder, that was. since her exile, it had gotten much harder to just have a bit of alone time, especially since there was no one to help her hunt, or protect her territory. still, perhaps she was better off this way. at least the moronic warriors who'd driven her out could no longer bother her.
russetswirl was a leader now- that was perhaps the worst part of the whole situation. to have her own rightfully earned position taken by her brother. her brother- who'd never been the smartest or least naive of cats, was now in charge of riverclan. in all likelihood, the clan was slowly dying under his command. she didn't really care, though- in fact, the ones who were still there probably deserved it in any case.
letting out a huff, the rogue stretched her limbs forward, feeling the muscles in her lean back tighten. she might have to go out hunting soon, yet again. the lack of a fresh-kill pile was such a nuisance. still, for a moment, she could relax.

russetstar had grown a lot smarter ever since having realized how terrible his sister was. perhaps it was hard to accept that evil lay right under one's own nose, but the tom had managed the feat, much to his own surprise. thornfrost and bucknight had been overthrown, exiled, and he had been chosen to take the place of a leading figure by starclan themselves, something that left him both daunted and accepting of his sister's departure from the clan. he had cared for her, and she had done nothing but taunt and reject him from the family, along with his jerk of a brother, snakevoice. it was a little strange, wasn't it? he was the only one left in the clan, perhaps who you'd call the purest of heart.
was that why he was walking into rogue territory, why he was hunting past borders with some sort of curiosity to what led before him? he had survived the dark era with a stable head on his shoulders. perhaps challenging the fates was something he could scrape away with, because although he hadn't had the best of luck lately concerning cricketpaw's death and the war between two neighboring clans, he'd certainly been the luckiest of his own family. his paws forced their way through the gentle grasses leading to the territory, unable to recognize his sister's rogue scent after all these moons.
and so when the chausie padded through the area, his eyes widened at the sight of a rather familiar figure, paws tensing up. it couldn't be her. oh, goodness no. starclan, not now. "...who's there?"

the scent was familiar.
as was the swirled russet fur. as was the obnoxious posture, now more powerful, as if to mock her. as was the voice- soft and honeyed, low and deep.
she knew this cat. knew his identity all too well. ignoring his question of her identity, thorn sauntered over to the leader. smirking, she drew closer, until her olive gaze was only a few mouse-tails away from his own eyes. "how are things, little brother?" asked the molly. the tips of her maw curled up further.
cheap intimidation tactics. still, they'd worked for her before.

ah, how she reacted-- this was certainly thornfrost, there was no doubt about it. the former deputy even had the nerve to address him with a younger title, despite the two being the same age- something he would not stand for like he'd used to. no, russetstar was braver now. "...i believe we're littermates, thornfrost. though i wouldn't put it past you to already be forgetting about your kin, considering you were always loyal to bucknight before your own family." he murmured with a disappointed shake of his head, tail lashing with a small hiss as the leader narrowed his eyes.
him and thornfrost, they certainly didn't get along. and he wouldn't find himself intimidated by her, now that he was a leader, now that he had an important sort of position to play. he still carried nine lives with him, after all! he'd made it through hardships. he could make it through one more, couldn't he?

he'd certainly gained a backbone in his time as leader. she'd supposed as much would happen, having observed the same change in herself after being promoted. still, thorn wouldn't be intimidated by her brother, of all cats.
"yet i seem to recall you being born later," said the molly cooly. it was true- although considering the difference was so small, it really didn't matter at all. still, it was a perpetual dominance sort of thing. "and frankly, i've never seen the need for loyalty to one's own kin. why should being birthed by the same cat make you deserving of loyalty, after all?"
standing so close to the tom, looking slightly down at him, she could sense something new in his eyes. they'd gained something- determination? weariness? or perhaps they'd lost something. the unconditionality of the kindness there, or perhaps the more naive side of his personality was missing now. either way, russetstar was almost less annoying now that he didn't seem to lavish her with affection and encouragement at every turn.

ah, perhaps he was born after she was, but it didn't make the term any less antagonizing for him as he lashed his tail- admittedly, he was rather sick and tired of being treated like this by her, not when he was supposed to be a strong leader now, somebody who took charge and kicked up a storm! he couldn't give into thornfrost's constant teasing anymore. "...it's loyalty to cats who have grown up by your side and protected you, cats who were loyal to you until you dumped them to the side. it's more complicated than you bring it up to be, and you know it." he hissed, though he couldn't help but find himself a bit unnerved by his sister's actions.
he hadn't seen her for so long, and look at how they'd switched places. he was riverclan's leader, for goodness' sakes, and she was a measly rouge. why was he still frightened of her a small twinge, when he was supposed to be so brave? perhaps he just needed to talk, to amp up his own confidence. but he was... scared, for some reason. scared of his own sister. "but you're the opposite of loyal. a coward who couldn't even stay and go fighting, someone who ran away."
