Meeting With A Kiwi

Kiwi was walking around on this bright and sunny day. It was a cheerful setting, but she was anxious. Her belly wasn’t that big, she knew, but what if she couldn’t find a place for her kits? Having kits was a decision that she didn’t think too hard about when she should have. But even if she didn’t want the kits, she had them. It would be cruel to not care about them. All she prayed for was to find some sort of shelter. Twolegs were an option, but in this area, it wasn’t just as if they captured you. There were stories they did more. She would shiver at this thought. That was why most cats stayed away. It was hard in the wild, carrying kits alone. You had to hunt for yourself which was difficult with her weight, keep traveling, and if you ran into hostile cats, they may not take mercy. Down here, you lived alone. If you were caught on territory that isn’t yours, no one cared. Kit, mother, elder, it didn’t matter. Kiwi sighed and went on. She had been eating.. fruit twolegs called it.? For the past few days. She had tried hunting, but it seemed impossible. There was this shiny, red fruit that sometimes fell down from trees. If you bit into it, it was pale yellow. Didn’t taste good nor bad. Her head was positioned towards to ground, so she didn’t see when she encountered a she-cat who sounded like she was snarling. She looked up. ”Ah.. hi.!” In a more desperate tone, she begged, “P-please, don’t hurt me- well, us. I’m carrying kits..” she was aware this probably wouldn’t help the situation, but she had to try.

Ivy was chasing a rabbit through the orchard. The stupid creatures would eat the red fruit twolegs grew when they fell from the trees. No! The rabbit was bolting for its burrow! Ivy wasn't fast enough to catch it before it disappeared underground.
"NO NO NO!" Ivy snarled in anger.
"COME ON!" She usually stuck to mice and birds, her jumping power was unmatched, but she got sick of that every day and decided to go for rabbits instead.
"What am I, a Windclan cat? I should stick to mice."
She padded through the trees. They were in an unnaturally orderly line, and more trees in rows. Ivy figured it was twolegs. Everything they did was unnatural. They sometimes collected the apples-she thought that's what they were called, and took them away for their own uses. Still snarling to herself over the loss of the rabbit, she stalked through the trees looking for something else, when she noticed movement. Finally, my luck is turning around! Getting closer, her face fell. Nope. It was a cat. Maybe this was okay. Ivy hadn't come across another cat in a while, and though she liked the alone time, she was starting to get lonely. Coming out to say hello, the other cat shied away in fear and begged Ivy not to hurt her. I guess I still have my angry face on... "I won't hurt you. I have morals, I wouldn't hurt a queen with kits."

”Thank you.!” she panted, relieved.
Then realizing she sounded like a clueless kittypet who had no idea how to survive, she looked up at the she-cat with more serious eyes.
“We’re just passing through. I’m Kiwi.” she greeted.
Kiwi wouldn’t be staying around for long, but it was rare to find a cat that was actually friendly. It was a bit rude.. but if she befriended the she-cat, she might have shelter. She wasn’t the type of cat that would take advantage of someone, but in this case it was for a good cause. Before she did that, she tried to ask.
“Erm.. would you happen to have.. a den? Kiwi felt bad, but remained serious.
”If so, could we possibly stay in it.?”

"No, I don't have a permanent den. I'm an explorer, I travel the world seeing the sights, so I never stay in one place long. I do have a temporary den, though. It's in an abandoned badger set not too far from here." Why was Ivy being so nice to this cat? Maybe it was the kits. Now, should I let her stay? I'm fairly sure she's alone. Cats don't really have friends in these parts. She doesn't seem malicious, and who am I to turn away a cat in need? Wow, I really am a softie. Maybe that was why Ivy wasn't cut out for Shadowclan. "You can stay if you like. It's nice to have company." Ivy turned to walk to her den. "It's this way." @Minty the Merry

Kiwi’s eyes widened slightly in surprise. She did not expect this cat to actually help her.
”Uh.. t-thank you!” she mewed gratefully.
As they were walking along, she realized she might have been acting rude. Trying to interest the she-cat, she asked her some questions.
“So, what’s your name?” she ticked her head to the right.
She was distracted by this and almost tripped on a pebble, but just managed to catch herself.
“I’m Kiwi.” she then had the realization, again, that she was being dumb. “I.. already mentioned that.” she apologized, embarrassed.

"I'm Ivy. Does your name mean something?" Ivy had never heard of a 'Kiwi'. Leaving the rows of twoleg trees and entering the more natural forest, Ivy felt a bit better. Pushing pas some bushes, Ivy waved her tail to an unsuspecting hole. "Here it is. I live in this old den until I get bored." She had a small fresh kill pile meant for if she had a bad hunting day, and what do you know, she couldn't catch a thing. "Here you go, you look half starved," Ivy offered a mouse to Kiwi. @Minty the Merry

”I’m pretty sure my mother said it was a fruit.? I’ve never seen one though. Unless those shiny red ones are kiwis.”
Kiwi followed Ivy into her den, looking around. She hadn’t eaten prey in awhile, so it was nice to actually have some.
“Thanks,” she mewed, hungrily gulping down the mouse.
She decided to strike up a conversation, as she felt.. well, a bit awkward.
“So.. what’s it like?” she turned her green gaze to the she-cat. ”Y’know, traveling? I bet you see a lot of stuff.”

"I think the red fruits are called apples. I'm not sure, though." Ivy didn't eat fruit, so why should she care? She ate meat and sometimes twoleg food if they were kind, like a respectable cat. Speaking of meat... She took a vole for herself and started munching. Hearing the thank you, she thought, She's polite. That's good. She'd be super annoying if she was rude. "Traveling is wonderful! I see all sorts of things I didn't know existed! Did you know twolegs keep way more creatures that just kittypets and dogs? They have these big fluffy wooly things, their wool is great for nests, these huge black and white creatures that are way bigger than cats, you can drink their milk, they don't care."

"The ocean was really something else. Definitely the most beautiful thing I've ever seen." Ivy had no words to describe the ocean. It was one of those things you had to see for yourself to truly understand. The water swallowing the sun at the end of the day and creating a rainbow of colors rippling across the waves, hopping down the cliffs for a drink of water and getting a disgusting mouthful of salt, the soft sand filtering through her paws and getting in her fur. She'd like to go again, but what would she do there?

"Ya know, traveling has its pros and cons. Since you don't know the areas, it can be dangerous, with predators and mean twolegs and all." There was the time she had to cross the biggest Thunderpath she'd ever seen, there was no chance she could cross it without getting slammed. While she figured out how to cross it, she sat and watched the monsters zip by with twolegs in their belly. Ivy used to think the monsters ate the twolegs and were taking the poor creatures back to their lairs to eat them, but later learned that wasn't true. "I learned monsters might not eat twolegs. My theory is that the twolegs ride the monsters, like they ride horses sometimes."

She developed this idea when a monster stopped at the side of the Thunderpath. Moving closer, she inspected the monsters huge black paws and noticed one of them was pierced and deflated. The twolegs in the monster got out, opened the back, took out a box and another paw! Monsters had a spare paw in their butt? The twolegs changed out the broken paw for another one, and the monster seemed good as new. The twolegs seemed to really care about the monster enough to heal it, formulating her theory. Why the twolegs would have such dangerous creatures baffled her. They were terrible! The could obliterate a cat and keep going without thinking about it! Twolegs were weird.

"You learn so much while traveling. I think I'm a better cat now that I've left Shadowclan, but a lot of cats from home would say I'm a coward. I could only imagine the names they'd call me."

Kiwi listened intently to Ivy reminiscing on about her adventures. She had never gone anywhere all that much. But this she-cat had seen many things. She had never suspected that twolegs rode monsters.
I thought monsters ate twolegs! she thought as Ivy went on.
And twolegs had wooly animals and black and white ones too, apparently.
Wow, she was amazed.
At the end of Ivy’s talk, the sentences at the end caught her by surprise.
”Wait, you were ShadowClan?” she asked. “From what I’ve heard, they’re the most cruel clan. I mean, no offense, though.” she added on.
Kiwi was a bit shocked by this, but not scared. She did wonder how such a nice cat could be in ShadowClan, but then again, that may be why she left.

@Minty the Merry just an fyi, Ivy got Cinderpelted by a monster but doesn't let it slow her down.

Oh boy, word of the clans even reached this far? That was pretty impressive. "Yeah, I was born in Shadowclan. My warrior name was Ivyshade. You're kinda right, the other cats did call me a softie, but they're not that bad. They raised me right and did their jobs, and no one can complain about that." Ivy always felt she was a bit different than the other cats. As a kit, she questioned nothing, as kits do. As an apprentice, she witnessed her patrol driving off a pregnant she-cat who clearly needed help, kickstarting her desire for change. As a warrior, she left, and told no one she was leaving. She had no siblings and her mother didn't care for her, so why would she say anything? Plenty of cats went missing all the time and no one seemed to care, so she didn't make a big fuss about leaving.

I hope Kiwi sticks around. We could become friends and see the world together, I wonder what I could show her that's close to here tomorrow. Wait. Ivy looked at her wrecked leg and realized something bad. Kiwi's pregnant and vulnerable. It's easy to protect myself with this useless leg but she won't be able to fight as her pregnancy progresses? How could I defend the both of us? I could tell her to leave...No. I can't do that. That's horrible!

Why was Ivy so attached to Kiwi already? Ugh. This is why Shadowclan called me a softie, always wanting to help everyone. So what if they're right. No, no, there was no way Ivy would abandon Kiwi. She would just have to figure out how to do things with a friend. "What about the kits? Have you thought of names? Is there a way to tell how many there'll be?" Remembering her warrior days, Ivy once watched the medicine cat check a pregnant queen, and was able to tell how many kits she would have. Ivy didn't know how to do that, but maybe Kiwi did?
