Slatestripe winced at his brother’s reaction. He was hoping his brother would be fully supportive, but he wasn’t entirely surprised at this reaction. “I’m not joking,” he said. He was glad to hear the confidence in his own voice.

Rainglow blinked. "How? How will you become leader?" He asked. The tom tried not to sound rude... but it didn't really work. Rainglow pushed a pebble around between his fidgeting paws as he looked intently at his brother. This was so weird of Slatestripe! What was happening!?

Slatestripe lashed his tail once. “By being the best warrior I can be. By proving my loyalty and dedication to RiverClan, even when it’s hard. By going above and beyond for my Clanmates when the opportunity arises.” He hoped his brother would eventually come around.

"But... you aren't the deputy..." Rainglow mewed, confusion flickering in his eyes. This was so hard to comprehend... what in the world was his brother thinking... He didn't like the difficulty of having Slatestripe as a littermate sometimes.

Slatestripe sighed. His brother really was having a hard time with this, wasn’t he? “Obviously I’d have to become deputy first. Whether that would be under Pikestar, Slatewhisker, or some other cat entirely.”

Slatestripe began pacing beside the springs, his brother’s questions making him impatient. “Obviously by being the best, most loyal warrior I can be. I have to stand out as exceptional among my Clanmates, and then the rest is in StarClan’s paws.”

Slatestripe just sighed and shook his head. Maybe eventually Rainglow would understand. He supposed it didn’t really matter; he didn’t necessarily feel unsupported despite his brother’s lack of understanding. Him and Rainglow just saw life differently. “So how are you?”
